The finale is so beautiful, it evokes such emotion. And still modern after decades and decades.

The finale is glorious.

What a remarkable symbiosis between the movement and the music... it's as if they explain each other. An the final several minutes, surely among the greatest in all of ballet.... the sense of exaltation!

The music, the choreography, and the great dancers of that decade combine to bring tears to my eyes. Lucky enough to have seen this cast live, and to have played the score as a member of the orchestra for Clevelnad Ballet (CB's 1977-1998 iteration).

Adam Lüders seems made for this role, his line, generous flowing style, one of my faves along with Sean Lavery. he was a great, and generous teacher as well. certainly one of Mr B’s masterpieces in modernism, even though the music can be quite emotional IMHO. i loved learning pieces of this very great puzzle

I haven't seen 4Ts in many years and it is as fresh as ever. Filmed in 1977 - and it is as new as if born today. Brilliant finale. When Hindemith switches suddenly from atonal to a major key. That music closes the ballet definitively, with the sweeping couples flowing past space.

Not to be persnickety; it is all tonal. That said, what you noted and called our attention to is the switch from dissonance to consonance, and those major chords are like sun bursting through clouds.

Thank you for this video. My daughter even here in Canada is a fan of Balanchine (no ambition to be a dancer herself but loves the dance). She's seen some of Balanchine's work performed live thru National Ballet of Canada and in the cinema (broadcast of Balanchine's Jewels by Bolshoi Ballet). This is great art and dancing. Thanks for this post!

Thank you! I am always astonished (and slightly dismayed) when the composer isn't credited, especially as this was a specially commissioned score... and a masterpiece! As indeed are Hindemith's other mature ballets: Nobilissima Visione (for Léonide Massine) and Hérodiade (for Martha Graham).

So lovely. I like the slower tempo...and note the thinness of the girl’s back then!
