In 1975 or 1976, I watched the fireworks display from the balcony of my 7th floor apartment in Alexandria (Lincolnia) Virginia. It was miles away, but the display could be seen clearly and, occasionally, the explosions were audible from that distance. I did not, however, hear any music from that position. (On a clear day, the Washington Monument was visible from there, so it was no miracle that the fireworks would be, too.)

It was pretty impressive from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Last one I saw was the bicentennial display with a million other people in 1976. That one had a great finale - green lasers shooting out of the top of the Washington monument as the Liberty Bell tolled. Unfortunately they only got up to about 26 tolls before the power required overheated the laser units!

The radius of the stars from the fireworks shell bursts from the fireworks were sometimes very big. Did they use 24, 30, 36, and 42 inch shells? I also saw some misfires where a few mortars exploded in the ground instead of in the air - the biggest new danger in all professional firework spectaculars like this.

Found the songs. Made a mix. Marches are all about the same tempo, so they blend pretty seamlessly. Check the description for the music credits.

Personally, I love the views from Arlington. This was shot from the Marine Corps Memorial/Netherlands Carillon. I've also watched from Freedom Park behind 1100 Wilson Blvd and from the shoulder of Route 110. The new Air Force Memorial is probably a pretty good spot too. You can get into most of those spaces with little hassle right up until showtime. The works launch from between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, so if you want to be under them, that's your spot, but since 2002, that area has been fenced in with limited entry points, so being hours early is recommended for there. They fun usually starts around 9:10pm. Have fun!

They'll be talking about San Diego's for years to come... so I'd at least say SD's was more memorable.

If there is one thing Americans love more than fast food, football, and/or God, it's being "right." If you're reading this and you're not an American, perhaps you've recognized this aspect of the American character. You know, how Americans will argue just about anything? What's more, you've probably also noticed that in those arguments, in spite of anything else, being "right" is more important that fickle things like logical facts or actual empirical data. If you're reading this and you're an American, chances are you're thinking something along this lines of, "this douche bag doesn't know what the hell he's talking about."
