I wanted to ask the same but seems the Toyota lost in that one and maybe one of tbeir main sponsors wasn't very good for business. Best Value for money wagon according to me is the Nissan Patrol, and with a little more fair judging, the Defender off the factory seems to be a better value proposition than the LC300

Was wondering the same thing - I guess the Wagon under $100k category went the same way as the "value for money" scoring criteria. Patrol Ti drive away $88k (first vid I believe said the Ti-L was under $100k). Landcruiser VX drive away $122k. I'd love to know what exactly one gets for that extra $35k that makes the 'Cruiser better value. Patrol has rear diff lock. Cruiser VX does not. 'Nuff said. (big one that never gets mentioned is Patrol can legally fit 35" tyres with no engineering cert due to the larger size of the factory fitted tyres, cruiser can't).

I cannot see how the Patrol did not win this. Best value for money by a country mile, reliable, 'bushability' and I think the petrol is now an advantage over modern diesels (don't have to worry about DPFs, AdBlue, EGRs etc). The 'Toyo' bias comes through in many comments and overall tone. The fact you cannot get a LC300 for more than 6mths must also be a significant disadvantage. I'll get my Grenadier before many people get their LC300.

I shall continue trusting the deserved reputation built over decades and personal experience of owning both older and modern Toyota vehicles which have all been amazing.

100,000km-300,000km my bet is for Toyota. I had my 1st Hilux run 300,000 in 6years. Now, after 11 years, the power and body toughness is still there. No problem with engine, transmission, etc.

We run Hilux’s deep in NW WA. They run 24/7 around the clock at speed on shocking roads including corrugations. The interior resembles a bull dust hole. They never see bitumen and aren’t religiously serviced. One is approaching 270000km and it’s still going strong We’ll shred a set of Bridgestone LT 697’s in 20000km - best tyre we’ve used period. We also run 79’s……ya can shove them up ya rear, glorified overpriced uncomfortable tractors that hate mud and water crossings. Hilux all the way for us, tough as

@@chrisandshazza01 I have the new Hilux SR5, hitting the dirt roads had 2 passengers on different trips complain of motion sickness as it bounces around a bit with the rear solid axil suspension. A lot of the judges spoke about ride quality. Personally I don't mind ride quality prefer the toughness. Strange to think the Ford ute got the highest points, above all other vehicles. Ford has upped their game, well done Ford. I will stick with my Toy.

Well done to the Toyota Landcruiser looks like a good rig 👍🏽 Thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the videos that you put on KZbin of how all the vehicles performed. A wins a win, however what was abundantly clear during the entire video is that everyone was extremely impressed with the Defender and it performed better in nearly every scenario. A few quick corrections of some statements that may have been correct a year ago but no longer correct now. "All of our drivers commented on the fact that you can't get aftermarket suspension and bull bars and things like that. And having 20 inch wheels." As you rightly proved through the entire video the Defenders suspension is perfect out of the factory and has a built-in lift kit and is one of the very few four-wheel drives in the world available that you do not need to touch the suspension on even if you want to tow 3.5t + right out of the dealer and it stays level. Having said that due to the Defenders unique subframe mounted suspension we supply 2,4,5 and 6 inch lifts for the new defender to allow up to 37 + inch tyres to be fitted and it drives close to stock on all of these so whilst there are very few aftermarket suspension options for the new Defender there are plenty of lift kit options which keep the suspension that is perfect in factory form as is. There are also factory and aftermarket bull bars which we supply. There are also factory and aftermarket side steps and proper rock sliders and bash plates. There are two aftermarket long-range fuel tank options There are 19 inch wheel options with the D300 and P400 or aftermarket 18 inch wheel options within Australia and USA which fit the P400 and D300. (Defender Owner) A couple of flaws in your review: The Defender has had a factory bull bar available since it was released. There is also an aftermarket one available now (I have my order in). 18" rims were standard on my MY22 D250, and available aftermarket on higher spec models. I have just come back from a week in NE Tassie (Climies, Montezuma, Sandy Cape, Balfour) and I was driving what a Patrol and LandCruiser was winching. Maybe you need to make your various test tracks a little tougher next year. Edit: With nearly 300mm clearance I don't need aftermarket suspension, but 50-150mm lifts have been available since release.

Another D250 owner here. The new Defenders are astonishingly good offroad. If they made this offroad testing track too difficult then I'm not sure that any of the others would make it through😆 My Defender came straight from the factory with a locking rear diff, light underbody protection, 300mm of ground clearance, recovery eyes, cargo roof rack and a built in air compressor. I could have also specced a winch and bull bar had I wanted to. Even the standard AT tyres aren't bad. To get that from any of the other 4x4's would require extensive aftermarket modifications. All of this for around $110k driveway compared to $130k for the VX 300 series Cruiser. I don't know if the judges are just ill informed about Land Rover when they make comments such as not being able to get a bull bar with the car or are just ill informed in general but given this is their job, it's quite disappointing.

I would like to see a criteria and score comparison chart of each vehicle. Some of the criteria may be more or less important for each viewer. So what may be the winner for 4x4 Australia may not be for us. Also when the vehicles are so competative there maybe only 1 point in it for a given criteria so it may come down to personal preference. For example if the Hilux over all points was only 1 less than the Ranger and you prefer the look and internal layout of the Hilux, then that may still be a good choice for you. Also the sound the Prado was making during the traction control test was shocking. Are you sure there wasn't some thing seriously wrong? I love your channel and the indepth comentary great work to all involved.

Good idea! I really want to see the 'value for money' for LC300! Especially since Toyota Diesel engines do not seem unbreakable -unlike their Petrol ones. Also, LC200 Series made the same noises Prado makes in this video, so I'd say that's normal and probably will be refined for the next series.

@@arefeshghi Totaly agree. All cars have there issues, but people seem to think Toyota's don't. The 200 and the 300 series air filters allow dust to bypass the fillter and dust the engines leading to premature wear and death. the 2019/2020 Hilux had a DPF issue they refused to acknowledge for 6 months and previous Hilux's had injector issues. It's not neccesarly that vehicle manufactures have reliability isssues, it's more about A: how long it takes to acknowledge the issues B: how much bullshit and inconvenience you have to go through before they fix it under waranty.

Even though I am Land Rover biased I still think the best in this category was the new Defender(Even though I could never afford it). The only things against the Defender is reliability(As it is new), Cost of new(But is does come far superior to others) and the rims(You can buy steels with a bigger tyre though).

As a land rover guy myself. I had the Discover 2 + 3 + Range Rover sport I just bought the Land Cruiser Sahara. The same spec LR Defender was around 40K AUD more. The Range rover was around 80K AUD more. Just too expensive. It broke my heart not to but a LR but seriously the money they want is crazy.

Those turbos are churning out >25psi of boost and putting all the condensed air into a block belonging in a Hyundai bloody Jazz. Don't come out here chatting up about how good the ranger's are, there's a reason the 2.0 litre set-up is only run by two ute manufacturers, and there's a reason that the vast majority of industry professionals resent it. Bad turbo seals and leaks alongside EGR coolers are an absolute nightmare and if you genuinely think that the 2.0 litre can reliably put out similar numbers to a 4JJ1/3, you're mental. Stop bashing the Dmax's and lux's just because you fanboy the most ubiquitous ute to ever grace the 21st century. It is a heap of shit that has a chassis tuned for a bit of off road work but no engine pedigree to match. Don't even start on the variable oil pump either. These magazines rep Ranger's because they see them for the first five minutes and then they're gone. Ask a mechanic or your local engine shop. They are quite simply, a disaster waiting to happen.

I do enjoy watching your reviews, places you take the vehicles to and putting them through a real test. Well done! However some of the info shared here is very misleading and right down incorrect when it comes to the new Defender. - 18” factory and after market options are widely available - stock tyres on most delivered cars are crap and proper all terrains or muddies need to be installed on all cars - Factory bull bar, winch as well as rhino 4x4 bull bar is also available - if you want to run 37” tires and that’s your thing you can with aftermarket kits available. - Long ranger has the 174L long range tanks available Out of the showroom, the defender is more capable than all of those vehicles even on 20” tires. Please check your facts before making some very incorrect statements. It can be very misleading for new buyers. The bias towards the LandCruiser is coming through rather strong in many comments. Should be mindful of that as that really does erode your credibility. Like many said before me, judging criteria would be helpful to see so we can make our own informed decision on what is important to us as the purchaser.

Really informative, great review. I wish you had a half tonne of payload in the utes so we didn’t repeatedly hear “it’s a bit light/jittery” in the back, and i wish they were all wearing the same AT tyres, but running the utes and the wagons together great range of terrains has been a brilliant thing to watch. Really appreciate the effort. I am curious why Hilux pipped Ranger for the prize in the previous year but after no upgrade of either since, this year the 2.0 litre Ranger pipped Hilux? I also feel a bit for the Defender, seems like it is every bit as good as the new Landcruiser or maybe even slightly better based on performance, but will always lose on the final score because Toyota has service/parts/repair available everywhere. I understand how important this is, and as a previous owner of a Defender 110 extreme… I also see that Landrover has done an incredible job with this new vehicle. Anyhoo, thanks for the brilliant review.

Really well done. Knockout stage was a winner and so was going from the test track to the desert areas then rocky terrain. You can tell that the testers knew their stuff and it wasn't geared for silly 4wd tracks Just what most people do and look for. You should be proud of your efforts and the 'well deserved beers'. It's a little difficult to really know if people have ulterior motives or are truly objective when watching these reviews. Having said that, I suppose you have to intuitively and intelligently choose who you look to for good advice. Not knowing a great deal about cars I've certainly done and am continuing to do a lot of research on what will best suit me. I've enjoyed very much this series you have put together, it's been fun and informative as well as giving me new considerations/options to consider. Thankfully I've still a couple months to decide. From my experience with a Grand Cherokee ecodiesel/Range Rover Sport vs Hilux/Prado/Navara/Ranger/Dmax, the air suspension holds really well after rough off road. Ud change the others many times before air gives up. Also the ride does not degrade, just gives up due to misfortune. In the end I spent more money on others and close to nothing on my SUVs. The 2 SUVs have been way more reliable in simillar conditions with no notable degredation over all, but the utes hv bn noteceably weak, all of them, in comparison

Yes its built for that stuff, piggy back rear shocks internal bumps, can be jumped, heat monitored, tow 3.5t without touching a thing proven improved system from d3,d4,d5 bags shocks usually 200k no dramas, trucks use bags remember, compare this to most other 4x4s you have to swap out the entire susp system to even hook on a van. Prob wouldnt be towing the kids or puppy though they can ride up front on the magic carpet ride 😉

I like the Toyota 300, but didn’t they put one of the filters under the car just next to the back right wheel? You know where tons of rocks are going to be thrown up and damage it. Also by putting it there aren’t you hampered by what size wheels you can put on the 300? I’ve ordered a Prado GXL and yes down the track I would like a 300, but they are going to have to move that filter away from that location before I pay big bucks for a Landcrusier 300 series!

Thanks for an excellent production involving some very levelheaded and rational people with the right priorities. I think, however, the eventual scoring assumes that all the cars are of equal reliability and with equal support. We all know that isn’t true, so in a way the cars are being assessed as brand-new hired for one week, so which is the best for that one week of ownership. In the luxury segment, you had a car that is not available for two years versus a car that won’t even last two years except by pure luck. Both of them are really bad idea to try and purchase right now: in fact your eventual overall winner can’t even be bought in the year that it is the winner, nor the year after that, and there might even be a new model available before the car actually arrives if you order it today. In the sub luxury category, both of the cars look very decent indeed, although a 5.6 L petrol V8 gulping fuel across the sand dunes and the outback is something that really sounds like it belongs in the 90s or even the 80s. And utes are what they are, although one of them is made and supported by a company that has got a terrible reputation for building cars with big issues and then leaving owners to sue them if they dare. These factors are not in your criteria, but any potential owner should make them an issue.

Cause Nissan aren't a sponsor. Who buys a lc300 over a y62 when they cost (based on rrp) 30k more? You don't even get rear diff lock on a $122k vx lc300 but you do on an 85k y62 base model 🤦♂️

At 16:52 you infer that the Defender didn't make 4WD Of The Year because of lack of aftermarket goodies. There is an Australian Company (New Defender Mods, they also have a KZbin Channel with the same name) that has been selling lift kits (from 2-6"); winch compatible bullbars; rock sliders; exhaust systems plus many more interior and exterior modifications for in excess of a year. A basic Google search would have discovered this or don't "journalists" actually do any research these days? Given this information, are you going to take back the award from the 300 and instead offer it to Land Rover? I also have 20 inch wheels on my Navara, with 33" rubber that cops a genuine off road flogging in all sorts of different terrain and am yet to have a puncture. I'd suggest your tyre issues have more to do with the nut behind the steering wheel than the wheel/tyre combination.

Be careful about the new?? Ranger diesel though. It’s the old Land Rover V6 the one that snaps cranks. There all in-line 6 now.

@@jorjimaco5331 Ford redesigned the crankshaft (along with everything else) when they put the AJD-V6 into the F-150, seems to have fixed the issue

Thanks for the review, must have been fun. I would only take one issue and that is with the opening remarks. 'had to leave some behind 'cause they just wouldn't have made it'...seems incongruent with then proceeding to take these vehicles on some of the easiest dirt tracks I've seen... I'm pretty sure all the vehicles would have made it.

@@DMEU77 their specifications don’t lie. The single turbo 4.5 litre V8 is an embarrassment for Toyota. It’s 151kw is beaten by even an LDV which has 160kw. I don’t need some so called expert to tell me otherwise. All the owners of those under powered Toyota’s just talk about how to modify them for better performance. After spending all that money for the initial purchase I would expect more.

HDC is super useful because it can do what even low range gearing cannot - and that’s brake individual wheels. A human also can’t do that with the brake pedal so use HDC when Control is needed. So turning a driver into a hoon is a good thing??? A for tyres letting a vehicle down, people have to stop going on about this. When you buy a new car you DON’T have to take the tyres it comes with - you just get them swapped out to what you want. The Defender’s bush ability is just fine. You can get BullBars and accessories for it. You don’t need to lift it or change the suspension that’s the beauty of the AirBag suspension. Barking on about the all independent suspension on the Y62 all the time but never mentioning it on the Defender - it makes it’s ride sublime and superb in All conditions and much more comfortable than any solid axle ever can. And the comment about the VX being suitable no matter how many in your family, I know is hyperbole (as you can’t fit 10 people in Any of these), but it’s not suitable unless you get a 7 seat version and as you said the preferred “bushability” one is the GR Sport with the factory lockers - It DOESN’T come with a seven seat option. So there’s that.

And the winner is…..Great outback 4wd until a rock hits the exposed (very exposed) fuel filter near the rear wheels. I wouldn’t consider that as a well thought out , bush ability attribute. 👎 Yes probably a great 4wd but again missing some key things.

Personally I think you swapped the Hilux & Ranger just… well just because The comments about the landrover are not warranted… bars are available, you don’t need lift kits for these things, what really is the problem with a Landrover is getting the thing serviced anywhere in Australia… you can’t… you can’t go to ARB or whatever to get some add ons and of course… the big thing reliability & cost of running … I’d buy a Landrover…. But I want to tweak / add stuff to my car myself, service the car myself and I want to have confidence that I’ll get home….. so it will always be a Toyota… well… just about any Asian type car as they are a lot simpler, get aftermarket stuff and service yourself

Since Toyota's have air filter which let the dust particles came inside which makes it to go into limp mode and Breakdown so yeah definitely can't trust the toyota

Shame they all tend to have “ low” profile tyres these days I know they’re to clear big rotors for optimal braking Still be good to see 16,17” rims as an option. Albeit with smaller brakes

Not bad reviews but the real question is reliability of the cars in the long run because most of them will break down or have problems at some time. I have had problems. My 2016 space cab hilux has had two DPFs replaced, two tail shafts, clutch master cylinder, Timing chain is noisy on start up belt idler bearings are noisy its on done 160000kms. O What a feeling..

Wow no after market parts for a defender you guys need to learn to use google. Lift kits all sorts, bull bars, under body slide rails, full under body stronger protection kits, many roof rack options, winch options, extra tanks fuel & water, pipes, tow bars, reversing with trailers using the ac dials, what else do you want? There is a Land Rover offered bull bar. Does Toyota offer one? If never seen a more biased lame reason for a decision in my life. If it was out performed or actually not as capable. If you were real journalists you would know how to use every new feature in every car. You professionalism was appealing on this test. No really difficult terrain, 1 soft sandy track. You didn’t use auto off-road mode to see how the cars performed in that mode. Ignoring options like 240v outlets not after market sorry but your 1980s testing needs to be brought into the 2020s. The only thing I’m really annoyed about is wasting my time watching amateurs pretend to be professional.

So the g wagon didn’t slip a wheel off road, they barely felt the ruts and was surprisingly great on road. Didn’t make the top 6? The rubicon did everything off-road with expected ease, onroad just ok. Didn’t make the top 6? The raptor was better on and off road than the xlt but the xlt made it and not the better in every way raptor? But three of the 6 were totally expected to have been Toyota’s.
