I used to do these make-it-work mods and also called them temporary too. Until I discovered they work well and last forever! 😀

pushaw..if factory was proper it would have been good.... if it was never good you get a free pass to use anything modern that works. otherwise you get a vehicle that needs to be a trailer queen. fine for a fancy rolls royce or early jag....not for a utilitarian vehicle. too many office princesses "set the bar" these days theyre not paying the bill or doing the work

To me personally, this project is so much more interesting than the troopy builds. It takes a LOT more planning and thinking out the box to take on such an ambitious trip with such a legendary old vehicle. Love watching you find alternative and creative ways of overcoming the old vehicles shortcomings 😀 Love this series!

As the owner of a 28 year old Discovery 1, this kind of build/trip is even more interesting for me than seeing you build a new vehicle. It's awesome that you have the resources to buy new trucks and kit them out to your heart's content, but for those of us with an older truck this gives us inspiration and shows that we can get out there on big trips too!

The early Range Rovers are such great looking vehicles. I love the seating position. It's like you are riding on top of it. Kind of like the very early Jeeps WW2 type. Your knees are almost at the top of the dash so the visibility out is superb.

Andrew love your work. Outback dust will work it’s way in unless you run your vehicles fan drawing clean filtered air in from the front of the vehicle so to cause a positive air pressure inside the vehicle. Eg Air con running in recirculated mode will cause negative pressure inside sucking dust in but in fresh air mode it won’t

Andrew, i stuck a d shell rubber strip on my tailgate which made a huge difference. The other thing was that i kinked the tailgate glass locking rod ends in slightly. I also taped the ends with about two revolutions of tape. The glass lid always struggled to seal properly and that combo of fixes solved the majority of my sealing probs. Bulldust tends to get n everywhere in the smallest gap it finds

Andrew, if you need a plan "B" for the tailgate seal, look at the seal on your home refrigerator. It uses a magnet to make an air tight seal. you may be able to adapt one for your vehicle. .

Ooerr! My absolute first experience of any Land Rover vehicle was, as a child, getting picked up from school by my uncle in his fancy new Range Rover, hitting a pothole at around 40mph and being terrified when, as it turned out, one of those 3-spoke alloys broke in half. People talk about steel wheels beng preferable to alloys "because you can hammer 'em back into shape" and the merit of that is debatable but what IS undeniable is that steel wheels bend rather than breaking. But, yeah. 40-odd years later, whenever I see an RRC with those alloys on it I still get the heeby-jeebies.

Andrew Love your old Rangie I owned one and then moved on to a Discovery or two. A good mod for the tailgate is to reposition the gas struts so that they go over centre when closed and so hold the tailgate shut instead of trying to push it open all the time. It then holds a bit of pressure on the seals and the tailgate does not pop open when you hit a big bump. You need to turn the struts upside down and move the mounting point to the lower section of the tailgate opening. The used to be a kit available to do it.

I've also got a set of the original three spoke alloys with my RRC, they do use different lug nuts than those that work with my steel rims. I've had trouble with air leaking through the alloy itself with these rims, porous castings or something.

12v fan “looks ridiculous” but is a feature in just about every Russian military aircraft and helicopter (usually un-shrouded and with rubber blades - one must not hurt one’s self in combat 🤪) ever made! We even used to have one in the family Kombi, looked the part for the era. I do like the Sirocco fans though (despite the $$), extremely low power draw and the self timer on them is brilliant for the camper... love your work Mr StP.

Fantastic to see you giving the old RR a new lease of life and preparing it for a great trip. Have loved watching the series on this car since you started with it last year. Lovely car and great to see it being used as intended. Sometimes temporary fixes are better than the original solution and it becomes permanent, nothing wrong with a bit of progress. The new wheels will do just fine when they are fitted. They may not be the originals but they will still look good and you have the originals to put back on when you’re back home should you wish. Looking forward to following you’re journey on the CSR.

A guy in our 4x4 club was driving through a field at 10km/h front wheel dropped into a hole and the vehicle stopped suddenly. He went through the windscreen and hurt himself. I would recommend wearing a seatbelt at all times regardless, unless stopped. With the exception of deep water crossings.

Great video Andrew, the Range Rover is coming along nicely ,those wheels look great and the wheels nuts can be ordered online, copies of the factory wheel nuts , that closed cell foam you installed on the rear window is extremely good product, i must have installed over 10,000 feet of it when i use to work for New Flyer Industries in Winnipeg a bus builder and we used used it on the inside and outside of the bus and it stood up to the Canadian winters as well as the hot American summers without losing its integrity to seal out moisture and dust as well as humidity and the window tint sure helps to keep your vehicle i would say in some cases as much as 5 degrees cooler, great mantra make it workable 'functional to get a job done, I drive old Volvo 240's as my daily driver and it functions extremely well and i do what is necessary to keep it going until i get the original parts or the closest thing to them. brilliant work 👍

Hi Andrew. I mounted the same cheap fan in a School bus my grandparents owned. the driver thought the aircon wasn't sufficient mind you this is on the Atherton Tablelands were the temperature tops at 32 degrees. But we mounted it and put a switch in the dash for him and ended up making a complete new bracket because the thin aluminium one that came with it was just terrible.

I’m pretty sure the alloys won’t fit over the hubs on a suffix D. I tried with my suffix C. Check the ends of the wheel studs, if they have a recessed line on the end it indicates the hub is compatible.

Vogue SE rims, that's a brilliant idea. (they were colour-coded to the vehicles body-colour on the Vogue SE and grey on the "normal" Vogue). I had them also on my Range Rover Classic (black 1991 Vogue Se) and it looked so good, even in that era when al other cars had 5-spoke alloys. Best Regards, David.

Two ideas. 1st to check sealing on tailgate(s). Cut 25mm or so wide piece of newspaper (or something similar) by about 300mm long and place it at right angles in gap over the new sealing rubbers that you are concerned about/have applied. Now close the tailgate. Then (gently) pull on the end of the newspaper. If you feel friction then you know the rubbers are sealing. If not, back to the drawing board. A panel beater taught me that trick years ago. Can also be used around side windows (to identify source of annoying wind noises) and even tail lights to see if the water entering the boot is coming past the tail light seals. Couple of things. If side doors rubbers are not sealing, before you try to bend the top half of the door frame inwards to close the gaps, wind the window down. Glass does not bend, and if you don't wind the window down - smash - ask me how I know. Re tail light leaks, "gentle" persuasion/caressing with pliers or a SMALL hammer and then a recheck with the newspaper strip will most often fix the water ingress into the boot. 2nd idea re exhaust ingress. As I mentioned last year in comments when Andrew travelled from Melbourne to Perth, aim the end tip of the exhaust pipe at 45 degrees to the alignment of the car. Also have the tip protrude as far as you can but not beyond the dimensions of the car. That way the exhaust is directed into the slip stream and not into the lower pressure area behind the car. I used to make/modify exhaust systems many, many years ago and this modification fixed exhaust gas intrusion in panel vans and the like - it works, and is cheap. If anyone else uses any of these these idea, I will take royalties, or at least a cup of coffee (with cream biscuits) if I see you.

Whilst the obvious and real reason of tinting the RR windows was to help keep it cooler, it also transformed it aesthetically! At first glance, it looked so good that I thought it was a different vehicle. I found the seals idea to be useful not for my vehicle, but for my regular use cargo trailer rear door, which I intend to use as a very simple sleeping space on some filming assignments in the Japanese mountains. So, thank you for that!

On an suv or wagon moving your exhaust to a side exit will push it into slip stream and prevent it recirculating into the back of the vehicle

The closed cell foam is an excellent way to seal the tailgate. I did it years ago to my ute and it seals the dust perfectly. It's holding up well, no problem at all. I even suggested it on 4 Wheeling Australia's channel for his Hilux. I don't think he has used any seals yet, but has a fan to pressurise the ute tub.
