I still am not quite sure how this event didn't live up to its potential. I've never quite seen parameters like what were present. I was sure that with the slight clearing in S and SW OK, storms were going to form. Interesting event. I look forward to reading any studies that come from it.
@SoonerNation945 жыл бұрын
I'd argue this event absolutely failed to verify to the degree it was expected to. It failed to reach its potential. I agree however, that it did have substantial impacts in some areas. It just wasn't the intense, violent tornado outbreak many were expecting. A 45% sig hatched SPC tornado contour is extremely rare.

Lapse rates I think
@fgossage5 жыл бұрын
One thing I noticed was that the cap over the open warm sector way out ahead of the dryline ended up being a good bit stronger than forecasted, and this didn't really present itself until the midday balloon releases. Even the high-resolution models didn't really catch it until after the 18Z sounding launches did, and by then, we already had the 45% tornado outlook and the PDS watches in place... and it was still an environment where the instability/shear parameters expected were in place... so it was way too dangerous to back off.
@Aaron-no6pc5 жыл бұрын
@@fgossage It was the capping. The lapse rates weren't great, but the wind shear, instability, and temperatures were enough to make up for low lapse rates. If the cap didn't stay in place, there would have been multiple violent tornadoes.

45:05 why did he issue his OWN warning???! Meteorologists should have a unified message and also go by the national weather service warnings and watches only. Also 1:18:00 you don't need the clouds actually touching the ground to make an official tornado. All you need is a column of air that extends from the cloud to the ground and you can tell you have that by either seeing the full tornado or by seeing an area of debris

It was in the low to mid 50's in central illinois on December 1, 2018. 31 tornadoes were produced in central illinois that day. Some were even produced when the temps were cooling down into the 40's; therefore, it's not entirely impossible.

Basically what this meteorologist was forecasting were pop-up thunderstorms from Hell! What I mean is thunderstorms that pop up at random points within the warm sector and then RAPIDLY becoming tornadic. This was exactly what happened during the April 2011 Super Outbreak, which affected mostly the Deep South. Usually, pop-up thunderstorms occur during the summer months, when wind shear tends to be low. However, pop-up thunderstorms sometimes occur with high wind shear; and when that happens, then these pop-up thunderstorms get very nasty very quickly! One red flag that some pop-up storms are going to be very rowdy is when they have rapid forward movements (such as over 50 mph).
