Why is Clive James still not on tv, he's a great interviewer, intelligent, witty and most importantly he lets his guests speak. Too many of today's chat show hosts think that because their name is in the title of the show that they're the stars, well your not the guests are

I love the singer she was the best part of Clive's show. Getting Spike'sGoons humour has little to do with any generation gap its simply a matter of our sense of humour. We are all unique individuals each having a different sense of fun, what tickles my funny bone might not tickle yours

Most of the best Brit comedy is based on Monty Python which couldn't have existed without The Goon Show. What we have now couldn't have happened without Spike, even if his humour now seems quaintly old fashioned.

Well of course, once a form is created it becomes more developed and nuanced over time. Still far better than most of the dross that passes for comedy these days. I really can't think of one modern comedian worth a pinch of shite.

@EdWrite Fair question; here's the answer. Google bbc "Grumpy old people 'can't help it' " and the first entry should be the report. Like I said, I meant no critisism of Mr Milligan, quite the opposite in fact; before aging set in and talking to an audience of the same generation he must have been awesome.

@hsd628 No, Australian, of two English parents who emigrated here in '72 and my Dad's a big fan of The Goon Show so I've made several attempts over the years to connect with the humor but it just doesn't translate. Most of the humor I watch is British, mostly on KZbin and I enjoy practically all of it, about he only exceptions I've found are Little Britain, The Office and that comedy panel show hosted by Vic Reeves and that other guy. Like I said, not all humor translates through eras.

I've tried listening to The Goon Show a couple of times and didn't really get it but I think maybe that's becuase that humor was aimed at a different generation. It's now been scientifically proven that old folks progressively lose their sence of humor as they age (this is quite separate from dimentia). So knowing that, it's all the more remarkable that Spike Milligan, even at that age, was still able to tell good unscripted jokes on tap. He must have been truly Amazing when he was younger.
@steeltrap38007 жыл бұрын
First thing about the Goons is that the humour is very heavily based around a love of the English language. Then it's tremendously anarchic/'surreal' (a term used far too often). There are remarkably clever conceptual themes and inversions underneath. A fantastic example is the segment about time ("I've got it writted on a piece of paper"). Go search for it, it's truly brilliant on all sorts of levels. I hope this doesn't all sound pompous/pretentious. I grew up listening to Goons when at lunch break during high school day long cricket matches I played, and I still laugh. Spike really was a 'comedic genius' in so many ways.
@SueRosalie4 жыл бұрын
Boy do you need a citation for that BS claim, KZbin user 5907. If you don't get the humour of the Goons, and the Pythons etc. it just means you're only average intelligence. Sorry.

DieFlabbergast You must be thinking of another Spike Milligan, True Spike Milligan grew up in India and Burma and spent most of his life in the UK but he travelled on an Irish Passport as his Dad was from Sligo
@DieFlabbergast9 жыл бұрын
Noel Mcloughney Very true, but what has it got to do with my post? Mine was in reply to a feller who seems to think Spike was an Aussie. Anyway, he only used an Irish passport because the bloody British (i.e. English) bureaucracy wouldn't give him a British one on the pettifogging grounds that he hadn't been born in Britain, ignoring the fact that he served in the British Army for six years.
@noelmcloughney62409 жыл бұрын
Point being, Both of you were wrong, Mr Milligan was granted an Irish passport as the Brits wouldent give him one after India became independent, he managed to get an Irish one as his Dad was from Sligo....so technically speaking Mr Milligan was Irish.
