FAQ:
Cost: The heads were $550 plus shipping and there was about another $500 in other parts and gaskets. Time cost was about 4 days with 2 people cleaning every part and bolt.
Heads: It was a machine shop in Grand Prairie, Texas via eBay, seller name: headsonly, that the heads were purchased from. Listing Title on ebay: "DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP HEMI 5.7L V-8 REBUILT CYLINDER HEAD 2003-2008 ONLY"
They have a core return program where you give them a casting number and some info, they send you the correct set of rebuilt heads with improved valve seats, and you send your heads back in the same boxes with the return label provided. There are plenty of people doing a service like this so do some research and find a seller that you like.
Cause: This car was a classic case of cost cutting being the main factor in the valve seat failure. Making radiator end tanks out of plastic is a bad idea because they get brittle and crack with heat (this problem is accelerated with the desert heat where we live). So the radiator cracks an end tank on a hot day and the engine starts over heating very quickly causing the valve seats to drop. Don't think this would have happened if not for the radiator since the car had 207K on it at the time.

Thank you! I just changed the cylinder heads on my wife’s 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 5.7 Hemi. In this forty minute video you showed everything that needs to be done. Not only was this video easy to follow, but there were times I would wonder if I could complete this. I’d watch this video and my confidence would go up again. Until now, I’ve done almost everything else under the hood, but this was the deepest I’ve gone. All the garages quoted us $10k-$12k to get a new engine. For the warranty on a new or a remanufactured engine you need to also replace the cooling system as well as buy a new intake manifold. Thank you again.

Did this on my 05 Magnum almost 2 years ago. I used a head rebuilder out in Simi Valley and they included new head bolts, gaskets and a great warranty. The heads looked like brand new. Few pointers I’d add to your already excellent tutorial: 1)Replace those little O rings on the water pump hard lines. It’s EZ to do while everything is apart. 2) Check your pushrods to make sure they haven’t been bent by the force of the valves impacted the pistons. Again very easy while it’s torn down. 3) Getting the air pockets out of the cooling system is a pain. I’ve found the best way is to use one of special funnels that allows the air bubble to rise out of the reservoir. Don’t forget to use the bleeder port on the water pump when you add the coolant too. 4) Check your heater hoses! With these cars getting up there in age it’s probably time to replace them to avoid another overheating issue down the road...,don’t ask how I know this.... 5) Consider replacing the motor mounts for the same reason. 6) My new water pump was purchased on eBay from a dealership and had a metal impeller. Mopar! 7) I used a engine support bar from Harbor Freight instead of a cherry picker so that’s another alternative. Great job, thanks for taking the time to document all your hard work 👍

what is the issue with plastic impellers? I've seen plastic impellers used on heavy duty diesel engines without problems. is it a creep issue?

Great video. This is to all you who ask way too many questions that are in the video, you shouldn't be watching this because if your attention span is so short that you missed parts of this great video, you certainly don't need to be working on an engine, especially this generation Hemi.

I agree to some extent. I did have to keep going back because this video is so information packed. Watching so carefully, I actually missed some bits of information he would be talking about. One thing I really appreciate is how he goes over all the fasteners, bolts, and connectors as he’s pointing out procedures. Some connectors are not always obvious, and when they are frozen in place it’s easy to doubt you’re doing it correctly. If you’re doing it wrong and you force something you’ll break it.

Excellent job guys. I'm retired now but spent 45 years in dealer service depts and found your video spot on! I'm dreading doing my 5.7 Grand Cherokee Limited with 137 K, but better to change heads before the seats drop. I've already used a Diablo tuner to have the fan come on 10 degrees early, shut of the MDS, and put an 87 octane tune on. I get 16.5 - 17.0 mixed, which is 1.5 better than stock, plus more balls. Highly recommend turning off MDS since some research says it might be involved, although it seems yours was on non MDS cylinders. Great job, once again!

You did outstanding job, I noticed on your cap you are a veteran!, same here USMC also born and raised here in Houston, TX! I just now purchased a Dodge 1500 Longhorn with 5.7 hemi. One owner, also from a Marine! He had one head overhauled due to valve seat issue also. I know I will have to do the same to other head, engine has 133k miles, 2014 year. I was looking to see how much work removing heads, not to bad. But your right all due to cutting nickels to make more money. Its greed, and knowing most will take vehicle to dealership for repairs, or buy another from same dealership! Honestly you guys did a fantastic job with video and explanation, thank you very much!

Just curious, why would you still decide to buy a truck with this engine knowing it will potentially drop the valve seat and give you this headache? Why didn't you consider other trucks that are more reliable like a Toyota Tundra or even Nissan Titan?

@@BURNZ2ACRISP it depends it a valve seat broke a piston and destroyed the cylinder wall. A machinist will tell you the block needs to be decked but it probably won't. Again depends on the condition of your block. I can't tell you if it will or won't work for your car, you'll need to determine if your engine is to far gone.

Good morning & friendly nice greetings from Bavaria ( Allgäu, Germany ) & me👋🍀🙂 Nice Video about the issue of lose valve seat rings & a great repair Guide, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this 👍🙂 Oh mate, what a bad issue and damage of your HEMI in your nice Dodge Magnum, i'm very sorry about that, a sad thing....😓 And i'm so AFRAID about that my HEMI could also become this damage, especially it's the same 5.7 Eagle 3rd Gen. HEMI in the 2006 Charger R/T Daytona what i've bought 2 months ago with 132.000 or even 222.000km ob the clock. I've found it via Internet at North Carolina and imported it and it arrived me ~3 weeks ago. And the Car looks great, especially for its age of 14 years and the mileage. I see the car was not used a long time, and the seller gave it away to the shippers without filling up the motoroil. And so the HEMI had Not enough oil and runned that time when it was in the way, in the vessel. Motoroil It was under the "Safe marking" at the oil Stick. I gave ~1.5 liters of Motoroil in it and then it artived the middle of the Safe marking. What a big shame for the seller i think! That's really really Bad i think. BUT, the HEMI runns quiet and very nice, so i really hope the low Motoroil didn't made any damage. It's a beautiful Motor, i love it! But now i've found some Videos of the issue of the loosing valve seat rings. And also about the HEMI Roller lifters issue what is also called the "HEMI tick" & now im very very afraid about that.... Especially because it's a 2006, it's a 3rd Gen. Eagle HEMI, with the mileage when these engine failures could be possible. What do you think i should do now? And could you Tell me about, what is the most often worn part at the belt drive for the wather Pump, AC and steering pump? Because i listen a little "queeking" when the Engine is running what comes from this belt drive. For your knowledge i'll be very thankful. I Hope my english is good enough that you'll understand me right, but i think so😅...i'm a real Motor Enthusiast, and i Spend more than 17 years with Alfa Romeo Cars in Motorsport, upgradeing, repairing, working on it and so i know every Bolt & screw of these very nice Cars and engines. But American Cars, especially Classics, but even also these modern MOPARS with HEMI's are a big love of me /since i was Young, US classic cars are my big Love. And this 2006 Dodge Charger RT Daytona, a Top Banana is a big Dream of me and to own one now Made a big Dream true. And at this time i'm fixing different things on it before i could Drive it. And now, with the knowledge of these possible Bad issues im really afraid about that my new old HEMI Dream could get that.... I wish you a great day and i hope for a answer of you, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Bye👋🍀🍀🍀🙂

One very important thing- The people in the know ALL stress the importance of using the Mopar sealant on the oil pan gasket. Crucial.

I have a question, you couldn't install the Oil pan with the gasket already on it. Or is there a specific reason why you had drop the oil pan gasket separately through the front to sit on top of the oil pan ?.

Wouldn't be easier to pull the whole engine as a unit you are having to tear the engine apart anyway.

@@cardesinr Yeah, I just freshened up my 5.7 Hemi Magnum RT. Once I got used to the power, comfort ,and utility of the Magnum it's hard to give up. They don't make them anymore, there's really not anything out there that compares. I've got Blastin Bobs exhaust and 22"X9" gray Viper wheels. The car looks and sounds great

Watch that upper radiator hose, folks. It's too short! The torque of revving the engine will rip the hose from the radiator. Happens more readily when engine mounts are torn.

Insanely thorough video for this job! One of the best I've seen on the net. Love how you showed the fix with the engine in the car, which is what most shade tree mechanics would do. Since you had that picker though, did you ever contemplate just pulling the motor out to make life easier?
