It must be Handycam season, because I found a CCD-TR517 at the thrift store today. It's the same low-end Video8 XR model that uxwbill reviewed, but it did come with a "lost" tape inside, and it works fine.

Would you be willing to make a video of that camcorder when you get a chance?

Low Budget Videos I already sold it on eBay. You can watch uxwbill's video about the CCD-TRV517, if you haven't already.

The problem with the scroll wheel bringing up the titler isn't a mechanical problem. If it does *something* every time you press it, then it mechanically works just fine. It's an electronic glitch. My TRV340 had that problem when I first got it. Pressing Stop would engage the manual focus, pressing fast forward would engage rewind, and a couple of other ones. Like the "mapping" of the buttons became messed up. I think that's your issue. Like mine, yours will probably eventually clear up. It's really weird; I don't know what causes it. Otherwise, a very fine camcorder. Too bad about the tape loading issue. Does it do it if you try another tape?

Score! I really enjoyed this video, it had a little bit of everything, without being overly long winded and boring, not that your videos usually are. :) Nice to see zeh StinkPad R60 back on its feet.

Very nice camcorder. Can't believe you got it for $5.79. WOW! I have two Sony DCR-TRV280's and I love them, but they won't play 8mm or Hi-8 recordings. You really can't beat the built quality of the Sony Handycams.

I wish we got deals like that in our thrift stores! The DCR-TRV330 model sells for a good amount of money on eBay, and that battery it came with even more so. I just got a Sony FDR-AX33 4K camcorder that I will be doing a review video on soon. I have had it for a week as of today. I may just have to take a trip to a few of our thrift stores soon to see what comes up! It seems like "camcorder season" is around the same time as "spring cleaning season", probably for good reason.

I got the PAL version for a whopping $2.50 at a thrift store with a traveling bag and pretty much every accessory that originally came with it. Appears to also never been used. I didn't have a usage for a PAL camcorder so I ended up selling it on eBay for $200. It's amazing how much more valuable PAL camcorders are compared to NTSC; guess you can't really find them that often.

Hi, Maybe you can help me. My church owns a Sony DCR TRV 230 , and we can not figure out how to turn off the camera microphone. We want to plug our audio board in directly, but when doing the camera microphone remains ON. Where is the setting that turns that camera mic OFF. Thanks

Great video review from you as always. Got one of these units on the way to me via eBay. Paid a lot but not compared to some of the prices it goes for. Hopefully in full working order as listed. If not can always return. Love these old units and this unit has much better features then a lot of them of the time.

Speaking of older cameras, just got a really great deal on Bolex H16 film camera. Hope to have a review of it soon. Just need to find a place that will develop 16mm film.

Hi great video, I wonder if you can tell me whether this camera allows you to record time/date stamps in the bottom corner like the older Hi8 camcorders can do? thanks in advance.

Seems like a 2003 model. I have an old Hi8 from that year that has similar characteristics, so I would guess that year. But you can always Google the Manuel, and it see the year at the bottom of the cover page.

I have just dubbed a few mini DV tapes onto my PC, I used an ILInk cable from the DV out socket to a firewire-in socket on my PC. The cable was about £6 off Amazon, I have Cyberlink Powerdirector and have used it for ages, this week was the first time I ever used the fire-wire input on my 11 year old PC! The computer didn't seem to recognise the camcorder when connected, but when I starter Powerdirector and tried the capture screen, it all worked perfectly. My DCR-TRV340E has got the I-Link out and also has USB, which I have not tried. I have another old Sony HDD camcorder without I_Link but with USB out so I will be trying the USB option a bit later.
