Wow! When this video first started, I had to check my speed setting to make sure I hadn't accidentally bumped it up to double-time! :D One of my favorite things about these videos is that Jonny's brilliant playing at the beginning gives us a glimpse into what's possible by mastering these techniques and concepts. Great stuff!

I’m a clarinet player ( and an old one.......72) but enjoy keyboard explanations of topics such as the one presented here........improvisation. And..........you are a very good pianist........IMHO! Great touch! Thank you.

Super tutorial ! Thank You Jonny. It explains very clearly how we can step by step alter the G scale based on chord superstructure. And it gives also the chord shell at left hand . So usefull thanks again. Just on "question" : why do You introduce the subject with the V-I progression, but in the playing parts You stay on the G7 chord ?

Would you please be able to make a video or direct me to one about how one can learn how to improvise or make melodies like the ones you are playing? Sometimes I feel the melodies I make can sound lame or not exactly as jazzy as I want. I would really like some direction on the kind of swings/rhythms or patterns used in constructing the kinds of melodies you are playing as well as any knowledge on how to move your fingers and know when to tuck under etc. I'd appreciate any assistance!

I think its important to mention that you can use these " interesting " alternative notes because of the unstable TRITONE ,,, of the G7 ,,,,, also its easier to remember then as b9 #9 and b5and # 5 so your brain only has to remeber these TWO key notes to launch off , rather than calling them 11 th etc ,, good stuff thanks Jonny , great info , your a great player ..

The five chord or dominant chord is the same in major and minor. This video is about different scales to solo over the five chord. Some of the scales he has here would be very well suited for a minor key.

Great lesson! If I analyse these scales correctly, there is one thing, which remains unchanged: the guide tones of the dominant chords, which are b and f. Would it be too farstretched to say: you can choose any note you want, but do not touch the guide tones. You need them to move to back to C.

In the level 3 scale, there's an extra note. Isn't the Bb just a blues note? It makes the scale, g to g, 9 notes. It doesn't really seem like a chord tone. I guess the bebop scale does the same thing.

This is great info, thanks. It would help if you left the all the notes of the scale on the screen at the same time for a little while. I have a hard time remembering the notes of the scale when you play each note one at a time.

On the dom dim scale (lev. 4 ): Why call the 3rd tone a Bb if it's a #9? Shouldnt that tone be named A#?(same question for alt scale lev. 5)
@PIANOSTYLE100

That A# in the 3er case is not an 9#, it is a passing tone. Great video.

Anybody-In the lesson, when just the 4th note of the scale is raised, to C#, the C natural isn’t shown on the staff as part of the scale. But when the 9th is also raised, to A#, A natural is still shown as part of the scale. Obviously, in practice, any note could be included as a passing tone. But why is the natural 9th shown as part of the scale, but not the natural 4th?

Altered scale.. Super easy to remember 4 notes of Dom 1/2 whole diminished ..followed by the whole scale. Easier for learners to see in C. C Db D# E... Gb Ab Bb C.. Root b9 #9 3 b5 #5 b7 Root.. Or #11 b13..The way I like visualize this..50 years ago..Joe said..hey Bob ..what do you say we make a far out out scale? The altered scale..Bob says what. Yeah we'll have a chords to go with it too. This won't have a 9 or 11 or 13. Joe says it'll have a b9 #9 a 3..it is dominant ..so it'll have to be a major 3rd. Then a #11 b13 ..and best of all..the real book will just say..altered chord.

Thanks. I am working on getting all12 alt.scales down. Slashc Chords like F13#11..G triad/Over F7.. G B D/F7.. THE TRITONE IS NOT JUST A b5. In the extensions it is a # 11. Also new players can notice that a semitone down from the b7 is a six..but in the extensions, It is the 13.

You can always find easier ways (to you) to explain the scales. it depends on the "language" you are used to. Your reading is very helpful at least to me. The 4th I see as a "+0.5 tone/half-tone" (or "half-tone/tone (on the chord)"). Cheers!

@hungryformusik

Yes, or G13sus4, for that matter, because I‘ve never seen a sus11 notation. So you have no root (because it‘s a rootless voicing), no 3rd (because it is replaced by the 4th), no 5th (which is common in a dominant chord), and the 7th, 9th, and 13th.
@PIANOSTYLE100
@PIANOSTYLE100 3 жыл бұрын
@@hungryformusik Good points. Notes F A C E.. is rootless form of G13 sus4 .Base could play the G. Otherwise it would.be a FMaj7. But in terms of G.. F A C E is (b7 9 Sus4 13.) or G13 sus4. Glad you said something. G13sus4.says it all. The best.
