I got to try apples grown in my yard for the first time this year. It s a sweet sixteen and it has 15 apples on it... Now it only has 13... It probably will now be my favorite because i grew it..

For growing here in USDA zone 3, my favorite is Liberty, hands down. It's hardy, disease resistant, prolific. The flavor is beautifully balanced. The flesh has flecks of red that make a warm, ruby tone apple sauce. It's great off the tree, cooks up well, and makes the most beautiful apple cider vinegar I've ever seen. I have a Golden Russet, and it makes knock-your-socks-off apple juice, but the texture is not my plan A. Haralson is my favorite storage apple, and it grows well in Minnesota. I also have a Honeycrisp, which I like for flavor and texture, but it's a fussy beast, always the first to pick up any disease in the area, always the first to react to too much or too little rain. I wouldn't grow it again if I were choosing all over again.

I hate trying to grow honeycrisp. They are the most pitiful looking, finicky trees in my orchard. 5 years old from grafting and nowhere even close to fruiting. I have 2 liberty trees and 7 honeycrisp. I wish it was the other way around. I haven’t tried liberty as far as taste yet but I will get to this year. I’m excited because I’ve only ever heard good things about it. I will say a lot of my liberty apples have bug bites though. Haralson and Connell red are the only 2 varieties in my orchard that are completely bug bite free.

I got a liberty Apple tree about 6 years ago. It was one of the last four on the lot. I thought it was on discount for $12. Pleasantly surprised when it rang up for $4! Since then I found out it was a dwarf. No problem in that it is an incredible overachiever . This small tree always puts out a lot of fruit. Practically overloaded. It also has more disease resistance than most of my other cultivars and take on the heavy clay and heat of eastern Kansas. Closest in taste to a McIntosh for what it’s worth. Overall good tasting 🍎

My backyard favourite right now is Elstar. Its a child of golden delicious, so it sports some honeyed taste, as well as being well balanced and a hint of lemon on the finish. No disease issues yet, but that is relative to the amount of Neem and EM sprays I do.

BC Macintosh are my favorite from childhood. They are becoming hard to find but I still love them over anything else. I remember you had mentioned they were one of, if not the one that uses the most pesticides/herbicides so I'm looking for another favorite. We have very little choice in northern BC, we get what we get so it's hard to keep one in mind when there are so many new vrieties coming out every year. If there's an apple that's soft as the Mac's and some sweetness, it would be a favorite, but nothing so far.

Spartan is my all-time favorite. I used to have two apple trees in my backyard in Sherbrooke, QC : one Spartan, I suspect, the other one undetermined. I was pretty ignorant of the care they needed at the time but did my best without chemicals. Fruit was not perfect but I did get enough to taste and cook, once trimmed. Unfortunately, a storm torn my preferred one down and I had to get rid of the other one which was unhealthy. Should I be younger, I would start all over with the help of your precious advice. Thanks for your fascinating work and videos.

We've got a Braeburn tree in our small back garden ,it is disease resistant and the fruit is sweet and slightly sharp and nice and crisp .I'm going to get a Bramley this year for cooking. We also have a Conference pear ,peach (which suffers from leaf curl every year) and a damson tree. Thanks for the info.

I have a tiny apple orchard (about 20 trees) and have learn a little of what he mentions over the years. This is fun to watch. Liberties Spartans were some of my first trees. While I lost one of each early on to Fire Blight because I didn't recognize it I have found they are otherwise resilient to pests and disease, super productive, great to eat out of hand, ok for baking, good for juice, and good for cider. Red Fields are currently my favorite, red fleshed, tastes slightly of berries, makes good juice and cider, great for baking. Not the best to eat out of hand though but the trees are very hearty and very productive.

My favorite store apple is Jonagold apples but apples here in Iowa where I live depends on the time of the year. I like Yellow Transparent early and Northern Spy late. I like an apple with a balanced flavor and texture.

I've only had the opportunity of trying the Cox Orange Pippin on one occasion and it was truly an impressive tasting apple so much different then the North American apples I've been eating for so many years. I now have 6 trees of the COP in my young heirloom orchard and looking forward to having them more often.

Anna apples are in my top 3. I have 2 trees currently in my backyard and they are prolific producers. It's got a good amount of disease resistance as well unless we see tons of rain like we did early this year. Awesome video!

Favourite? Easily the 'Cox's Orange Pippin' - Crisp texture, balanced sweet / acid notes - but complex, with a profound 'apple' aroma, keeps well. A simply wonderful apple. (But perhaps not one for those used to 'cardboard' textured sweetness. But hey, everyone should be comfortable with their level of 'taste complexity' should they not?)

I grew up working on my aunt and uncle's orchard in IL... here are my favorites: Jonathan - caramel apples, pies, fresh Yellow Delicious - huge from their orchard, best eaten fresh Ozark Gold was runner up unfortunately those same apples in the stores pale in comparison to the freshly picked sun warmed ones.

Here on pei honeycrisp grows to perfection. It is hard to beat for taste. Liberty to me is underrated for taste, is abundant,very resistant to disease and keeps for several months in the cellar.

BC Macs, R my pick. I try NOT to be picky, as I believe in NOT making of food a 'god'. In this way, life remains simple for me and I become more grateful for whatever is put before me. I should add that when I go to the grocery store, I like to buy the apples that are local, the kind that are NOT polished and waxed. They usually look kinda 'dusty' and can have a myriad of names that I can never remember. There...NOW I'm finished.

Perhaps you will disagree but I think how storable apples are is also important. I can't eat all the apples when they are ripe so they must store well. Around here, everyone goes mad for honeycrisp apples, but they don't store well so they are only a seasonal phenomenon.

An old German variety (from the south west of Germany) called "Brettacher". They are rather sour at the time of harvest, but they change during storage and become sweeter. They can be strored (in a cold/dry basement - no cooling) at least until Christmas or often even until early March. They are good for beeing eaten directly, but also for baking and "musting"(?).

I live in Kentucky and it is a Great area for Apple growing. I planted 6 different varieties 2 months ago : 1. Honeycrisp 2. Golden Delicious 3. Granny Smith 4. Jonathan (planted it because that's my name) :) 5. Red Winesap 6. Macoun (not a good producer usually biannual but supposed to have a berry hint in taste)

I would currently say perhaps Pink Lady and Fuji are my favorites. I am attempting an Orchard on 20 acres in North Florida. I planted a ton of stuff but the deer decided to eat it in the fall. I am in Zone 8 here. Other than deer our biggest battle is depleted soil and $$$ ;?) Kevin

I planted Honeycrisp , pink lady, Anna, golden delicious this year. I planted the Honeycrisp because it one of my favorite eating apples but I think they will be hit and miss for us due to chill hours, we are in 8a and can get 500-900 depending on the year. I will keep my fingers crossed and plant some Granny Smiths next year because they are better pollinators for the HC Apple.

The Lady Alice can be found in health food stores in late autumn and early winter. It’s flavor is amazing and a good Lady Alice can be like a fresh version of apple pie as it can have some spice notes. Not sure how easy it would be to find the Coos River Beauty apple except in Oregon. It has a great flavor and a nice crunch.

I bought 5 bareroot apple trees and planted them last spring. This spring after the snow melted, 4 of the 5 had bark splits on alot of the trunks. The NovaEasygro was supposed to be easy lol, but now with that one I have only a shoot from the semi-dwarf rootstock. I'm hoping to graft honeycrisp onto it. The honeycrisp, wealthy, and wagener all produced a new shoot or two and hopefully will continue to grow. The last one, Freedom, had no splitting and seems to be doing pretty well. I haven't tasted any apples from those trees yet, and I'm not sure why I had so much trouble, but there was alot of snow last winter. I have tasted honeycrisp from the store though and it is probably my favorite so far.. Thanks for the video!

Jim it sounds like sun scald. You will have to either paint your trunks white or plant a shrub to the southwest of the tree to solve the cracking. Common here too.

In central Ohio, our local U-pick orchard has rubinette and mutsu apples that are amazing. These varieties seem rather fussy for an average backyard grower in a humid region, but I look forward to eating them every year.

@@xaviergregorio7698 Its a hybrid variety created to be disease resistant. It has a tart flavor, vaguely similar to Golden delicious, but more sour. It is firm and crisp and lasts well in storage. Great for desserts, cider, and eating out of hand if you like your apples tart like I do.

In zone 8a South Normandy I like "grosse jaune / big yellow" (I don't know the exact origin). Reine des reinettes and Reinette du Canada grise (in fact it is not from Canada !) as well as Reinette Clochard and Winter Banana are tasty too for me. I have some "red skins" but yet don't know the origin.

Jonagold is my favorite. Perhaps because of nostalgic reasons - we had a full size one in the backyard as a kid. Given that it is a triploid and is fairly susceptible to most diseases, it wasn't really on my list once I started planning out which trees to go in our yard (going to start with an Enterprise and a William's Pride).

Not distracted, rather, you are totally atuned! // Observation and a question for the community especially if you keep bees and have an orchard, is regarding the commercial growers spraying antibiotics at bloom time, the possible effect on bees and the possible effect on levels of probiotic in the apple. Recently in the news, there was an article stating that apples possess probiotic qualities in the core of the apple and the recommendation is to eat the core structure (but not the seeds) and that is perhaps the genesis of "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away". Here's the question: Is there evidence that spraying antibiotics on apples knocks out the bee's immune system making them more susceptible to disease and at the same time lowering the probiotic content of the apple?

Good question, I have not dug into the research on the subject. Honestly I RATHER focus on the positive side of growing fruit in a permaculture approach and look AHEAD towards the future than to focus on looking back on antiquated methods of growing monocultures with it's crutches to support the growing.

I always try to taste every apple variety that's available in the local farmers market. So far, the best apples I ever tasted are #1 Beforest, #2 Lobo, #3 Mutsu. I've planted only Beforest, and the fruits are already attacked by scab :( I also have a nearby crabapple growing by the road, it's so good that I think I will need to graft it.

Glad to see you included at least one Canadian: Nova Spy. Since I last responded, I have had to remove Hunt because I live near desert. Hunt, along with other russets, breathes out all moisture. Sigh. Now Lamb Abbey, GoldRush, and Claygate are the leaders in my home orchard. Two heirlooms & one from Purdue, Rutgers & U of Illinois (PRI).

I bought 4 apples that are not any you’ve heard of in the store. One is a jeffreys apple cuz my sons name is Jeffrey. Lol. Hope they are tasty. Hoping to grow them espalier style along the chain link. Thank goodness fruit trees take bad cuttings well and are quite forgiving

Y’a for zone 6. Look up ‘nursery and northern spy’ you’ll likely find whoever is closest. Most fruit tree nurseries are sold out.

Depends on where you are. Cortland here does well without sprays; we have low pressure most years, and I have never seen fire blight on it, mildew or scab.

My Cortland suffers from Apple Scab mostly because it's sheltered from a good circulation of airflow and the ground tends to hold and trap water at times.

Hi Stefan! Love your show. I am on the hunt for my favorite apple. Last year, a neighbor gave my family some locally grown apples (I am in Winnipeg, MB). There was a smaller one that had just the most amazing taste. Unfortunately we don't know what variety it is. I asked another friend who works at a greenhouse which sells apple trees. She speculated that it could be the Goodland, a dwarf variety. This spring I put in one Goodland and one Prairie Magic dwarf apple tree. I am looking forward to the fruit in a few years. Do you grow any dwarf varieties?

Ok. I have eaten Golden Russet years ago. My grandparents had an apple orchard in Poland, and grew lots of different cultivars. I am not sure if it's the same as your number one, but I loved it! I haven't seen it since I moved to the USA 30 years ago. I'd love to grow it here, but is there a place that sells them? Also, will they grow in zone 7/8?

I think orchards should sell sampler packs of a dozen or so varieties. I like Suncrisp, Jonagold, Winesap, Honeycrisp, Ginger Gold but I am planting many more and hoping to get some apples. I hadn't thought about squirrels. We have a lot of woods.

My favorite apples: 5) Pink Lady, 4) Arkansas Black, 3) Jazz, 2) Kidd's Orange Red, 1) Esopus Spitzenburg Ironically, I only grow #1 & #2 in my tiny orchard - mostly I grow English cider apples (Dabinett, Brown's, Harrison, Kingston Black, and Sweet Coppin). For weird reasons, I also have a baby Wolf River graftling. They are all 3 or 4 years old; only the Dabinett has any fruit this year.

Some cultivars take longer to produce than others. They are less "precocious" as orchardists call it. My prairie spy took 7 years before it produced it's first apples. Also in zone 8 you have a shorter winter than many of us. Apples need a certain amount of "chill hours" to produce fruit. It might be that you are too far south for this cultivar. If you are planning to plant more apple trees or replacing the ones you have look for ones that need a small amount of chill hours. Another possible reason trees don't produce fruit is because they don't have a suitable pollinator close by. The Orange pippin website has information on which cultivars will pollinate each other.

Best in my experience among at least 50 varieties is Hunt Russet. Practically unknown: it has little russet, is nearly all red outside, golden flesh, ripe latter half of October here, taste is tangerine & rose petal - the rose finish goes on and on; 18 & 19% sugar with enough tartness to balance it into seeming to be mildly sweet at picking; no disease problems here. It's one caveat is only moderate production so far. Spurs put out anywhere from one to six blooms each - never yet seen the usual seven. Tree is still young. No disease problems whatever. Next is old or Virginia Winesap: smaller fruit; ripens same time as Hunt Russet, tasty and keeps until May, excellent every way I've used it. Very productive but its triploid pollen will not set fruit on another apple tree. No scab if fallen leaves are raked up beneath it before winter sets in. No fire blight here either.

Try to attend an open day at a University or agricultural orchard collection in your region. They often have them yearly. Even private collectors can have 50-100 varieties in a backyard. Check fruit groups on Facebook in your region.
