Great videos to the beginners out there. It's important to note that alot of the aquascapes you see from people online, that they have a large amount of hardscape and plants at their disposal. It also may be their main job. It gives the tank an instant look by pulling trimmings from other tanks or buying a whole bunch to start. The average person may only have 1 tank and not as many resources. Your aquascapes will evolve as you go. Stick with it and don't be afraid to change things as your skills and plant collection changes.

Summary for Joanna’s Guide to Aquascaping Don’ts that could easily double as Joanna’s 5 Tips for Life: 1) Don’t worry about being perfect. 2) Don’t compare yourself to others, just try to run a better race. 3) Don’t stop (believing). 4) Don’t doubt yourself or your abilities, just work and practice what you’d like to improve upon. 5) Be your own best friend, and believe that you are a truly capable person…. You are my guru ☺️👍🏻

Just a thought. I do a children's corner for the kids on bonsai. I bet you could do one for children to get them interested in having fish as a pet. Something simple for them to do. Say a small quart size bowl or jar with a lid. Simple landscape and a cherry shrimp or two inside the bowl. I bet that would make a great video for you. You are super talented in what you do and a great teacher. I know that you could something like this.

Great video, we all need to be reminded that this is a hobby and not a competition, that the object is to slow down and enjoy it. I love my tanks, not all of them are spectacular but they're my creations. I get so many compliments on my tanks, because even though I see small issues in them, others don't. So many friends and family don't know a dang thing about aquascaping and just see pretty live green plants with gorgeous fish swimming through them. I am so proud of the fact that I stepped out of my comfort zone and bought that first plant. Now I have the ability to reproduce plants and I'm pretty good at it. 💚💚

Number 4 dont doubt is me lol. Saying that all my betta tanks are different. I do try to experiment with hard scape but stick to the same plants but maybe switch it up with rainbow stone rather than sieryu or spider wood rather than mopani. I agree with what you said. Remember no two aquascapes will every be the same as no plant and hard scape is the same either. Each piece you place in the tank is as unique as you are. Don't set a time limit to get it done. Look at it as you build sometimes set back look at it from different angles. And remember if you use plants the aquascape will be always be changing as the plants grow and that may cause you to change mind on how it looks. Don't be afraid to make the change. Don't have nee fish you just bought waiting to go in the tank. This will cause you the mindset to rush the aquascaping and it can stress the fish while they wait until you are done. Rushing can cause all kinds of problems as well as possible fish lost thus causing you even more stress where you become discouraged in the hobby. When I set up a tank I think first of the fish that will be going in the tank when the aquascaping is done then get ideas from tanks with those fish in them. Read up on those fishes natural environment. The more you do this you will start to under what make the fish going in happy and feel secure. Yes we set up a tank for us but the inhabitants also have to be considered. Not everything we like is what the fish will. Yes they will survive for a time but at what cost to their happiness and the stress they my suffer. The more you know about you fish choice and the more you know about that fish requirements the easier it become to aquascape and environment in the tank that is pleasing to you and the inhabitants of that tank. Thus I stress don't tush yourself take you time and take time to set back and view your work. In all of us is the ability to see what we know is right however knowing what we are trying to accomplish and taking time to plan your step based upon knowledge and understanding more for the fish plus the materials like the hard scape and plants and water chemistry to make the tank thrive you will be able to relax and think it through with clarity for each requirement. That will give you the confidence to do it relax and allow to enjoy the process then the placement of each element going in will be you opportunity to make it our own as well as the fish that will live it's life in. .knowledge is power understanding makes it easier and as you do more in the future will bring the wisdom of what works best. But don't be afraid to experiment you can always redo it. Even nature redoes itself at time at times and the natural world is always changing and remarking itself time and time again. Even the best aquascaper doesn't like every scape they create either and they will tear it all down and start again until they are satisfied, so why wouldn't you? Think of this way when you don't like something, it is an opportunity to do it differently until you do. Mistakes teaches us how not to do something welcome it and learn from it. You will be surprised where it will lead you and what you can and will achieve theiugh the process.

I love #1 & #2. I've been in the hobby for less than a year. I watch a lot of youtube and I see these pristine beautiful tanks and it would cause me to stress over the imperfections in my own tanks. I am so glad you put this video out. All true statements! I use to get so frustrated at trying to make the plants stick in the substrate that I hated the whole entire hobby..(not to mention aqua soil, sorry hate it)... I am no MD, and I've accepted that. I like to "design" my tanks with things that are conducive to keeping my lil buddies safe, happy and healthy. If that means putting in the artificial plants so my Platy fry have more places to hide from Daddy then so be it. It's actually quite funny to see them burrow in the pink plastic forest... (lol they don't know it's pink) (2 months old today!) Thanks J!

This is great encouragement Joanna. 😊 I’ve never started a new setup with professional aquascaping rock/wood and fresh full plants because I’m frugal. So I don’t ever get that “wow” factor when I’m finished. “I am capable” (but cheap 🤣...one of these days I will drop that cash!) I add little by little. So sometimes I feel I am apologizing for the way my tank looks. It’s good to remember it can evolve and change over time. It’s part of the process and fun! 🌱

Yes, that’s a good point actually. Just because you can doesn’t mean you would. At this point I feel the same about the really high end scapes. I just couldn’t allocate (or acquire) all those plants needed to accomplish. But I love to look at them and inspire small scape versions. ☺️

Thank you so much Joanna! What a wonderful encouraging video (And a very timely one for me!) 🥰💕 As I've always expressed to you, Your gentle guidance and encouragement is much more effective for All of us than others who will just swing left to right in computer chairs doing nothing to help anyone ... In their minds, a quantified master of any particular skill set. For most other people I have always possessed a very loving ,forgiving, encouraging attitude for others . However when it comes to Only myself,: I'm an unforgiving, self-doubting ,own worst enemy perfectionist. It's always been impossible for me to say whatever I've done is good enough. As I've gotten older Im attempting to learn to forgive myself for even the slightest little misstep. As I'm gathering things for my first aquascaping projects I'm hoping that this will be one of the most wonderful skills I will ever accomplish. Not always just worrying about doing for others but doing something good for myself.(I absolutely love fish and plants so what there not to love???💕) Perhaps someday others will look to me for guidance or to set them up a gift aquascaping tank. For now, Just to begin will have to suffice.

Oh Girl...so glad you made this video. I'm guilty of all, plus a few like, I can't afford 10 pounds of elephant stone or to buy all the different driftwoods I want to use all at one time, so my scapes will never look good. Good as in watching all the great scapers on KZbin like you, MD, George Farmer, Tanner. And the I see it in my head, but I can't afford to buy all those plants at one time therefore this is going to be crap no matter what I do. I have friends come over and say...Your tanks look great, how do you get these great ideas and I look at them and think...You don't know squat about aquascaping or fish, let me show you some REAL aquascapers on YT. I finally did say that to a good friend and he said...Listen if you had unlimited funds you could hire these people that you admire so much to come and set up tanks for you, and hire somebody else to do water changes and maintain them right, but then they wouldn't be yours, you wouldn't have your hands in them, you wouldn't have you and your creativity in them, you wouldn't have that bond with your fish, and that would for sure, in all reality, take away the joy and happiness and peace that your tanks give you. Do what you can with what you have when you want to set up a new tank or re do one, OR here's a thought...Develop enough patience to buy the plants and drif twood one or two pieces at a time over a few months keeping your idea in your head. Plants will keep in other tanks, wood doesn't go bad just sitting and waiting. Stop whining that yours aren't as good as people who do this professionally and have been doing it for years. Yours look good to me and any other average person. Stop bitching, you are happy with them and they obviously work for your fish and shrimp, and you're fine with them until somebody compliments you on them, then you get all...BUT they could be so much better if only... When an average Joe Shmoe like me says...your tanks look good, learn to say thanks, feel good about the compliment, cuz I'm telling ya, us non fish people rarely even notice tanks so if yours catch our eye enough to really look at it and tell you it looks good, we really mean it. You be you, you do you, it's all good. That comment about whining really hurt my feelings, but he made me realize that I do, do that whenever anybody says something nice about my tanks, and I made a vow to stop that. And yes, as he said, just say thanks and move along. And exactly what you said...stop putting that pressure on myself. Just keep practicing the styles I like and stop expecting perfection. Your video was right on time for me. Thanks for re-emphisizing those points. Have a great weekend. 👍❤👍

What a fantastic video. You covered HMMMM, about 5 things that I do. I look at my 20 long and rescape it in my head CONSTANTLY. I'm on my 3rd scape so far. Guilty, guilty, guilty.

I rescape my tanks all the time but not because I think it's not good enough, but because it's so fun to express my ideas this way. Plus I'm trying to make this my job so experimentation is the best way for me to gain experience! 😂 That being said, I set up my tanks in a way that moving plants and hardscape won't ruin the food web or the integrity of the substrate. I understand why it might not be so feasible for people who are trying to find a permanent setup though!

I see so many beautiful tanks on KZbin and Facebook and it always make me feel bad about mine. I don't have the money to buy all the things I would like. Have struggled with keeping plants alive.

I.do.feel.that although my scapes don't look bad. Friends, family and people that visit love the scapes and inspire them to get into the hobby. I still feel that it does not look like the scapes I see on KZbin or pinterest, etc. It is fun but not easy to.make it look like the master pieces you see the pro's do. 🙂

One thing that I think most people don't think of when they're pulling together an aquascape is this... The vast majority of you are only going to have people that don't aquascape seeing your tank. The only tanks they may have ever seen are at pet stores. Guaranteed, you will wow them!

#6 Half of the plants you buy will probably melt away as they were grown immersed. The fresh aquascape on KZbin always looks great. And the several months later follow up always looks great. But in between things melted, and it looked really ugly. So be patient.

@@thesmallscape wish I could send you a pic of the 600lb piece of furniture I just moved and put it on. Gonna start filling it up as soon as I sweat out the 5lbs I probably just lost. I'll definitely send you a pic when it's up and planted. Thanks, Liz

I would say don’t aquascape a tank that you will need to get fish fry or fish out of!!! This was the biggest thing I learned. It’s also okay to NOT have ALL tanks aquascaped! Just do one or two show tanks!!
