The funky rhythm part at 21:38 reminded me of "Why did you do it" by Stretch, a popular dance hit of the '80s. The sound was spot on, as with the "Run to you" intro. You're right, the Intellifex and the Lexicon MPX-1 are the two that can do a lot of things good (I liked your previous Intellifex video, a lot of good sounds). The others have a couple of strong points but not as versatile and good all around.

@LeonTodd2 жыл бұрын
The "reverb in the delay feedback loop" trick on the MPX is really interesting. I guess it was probably their way of getting around including diffusion on the delays.
@BobGuido2 жыл бұрын
@@LeonTodd That trick was invented by Brian Eno, using a mixing console's effects send/return, a Lexicon 224 and Primetime M93 back in 1978 on the Harold Budd album "The Plateux Of Mirror" 😉 It definitely gives the delays extra depth and it is my preferred way to do so because it allows the delay lines to retain more definition with each repeat than diffusion of the delay line does. That Aerosol patch you were playing through comes from the dual effects card for the PCM81 which implements some of the morphing algorithms from the mysterious unicorn known as the VORTEX... which Brian Eno was consulted on. The "[effect] in the delay's feedback loop" thing came from the Lexicon Vortex originally. MPX-1 allowed for deeper access to the algorithm because it has a menu. If the Vortex had been designed with a menu system UI, it would have been one of the most revolutionary and innovative effects devices ever made, but when something is that creative, eventually the bean counters get involved in product design. Many effects devices that could have been really cool suffered from that over the years. Especially products from Roland and Digitech.
@LeonTodd2 жыл бұрын
@@BobGuido yeah the vortex fascinates me. Also, it always blows my mind learning about things Brian Eno was doing DECADES before they were marketed as "groundbreaking" in mainstream effects unit.

I'd personally mention the Boss GX700 because though it's not the most awesome sounding unit (digital preamp and reverb are kinda meh), it proposes analog drives, full effect-order capabilities with movable FX loop, intelligent harmonizer, delay with 3 fully independent voices... all for about 80 to 150€ on the used market. even some units 3 times more expensive cannot compete :)

The DEP-5 has my favourite delay of all time. There’s a quality to the delays themselves that I can only describe as “grainy halos” that sounds so musical. I’m so tempted to get another so I can run dual delays, though I very much doubt I’ll get one for the £26 I paid for mine! The price in the UK has shot up in recent years. Even that is solid in your hands. Undoubtedly not at par with the other effects in terms of sounds, adjustability, UI (well debatable, just turning a knob is very simple but not satisfying) and visual side, but you could get by a gig no problem with it and people probably wouldn't pay attention to it. Maybe they wouldn't think of you as Steve Lukather, but your sound would have delay, reverb etc. It must be harder to make exciting rack videos these days that you've really gone through ~everything that is on the market. But whenever there's a new one, I prepare my coffee and my grin to enjoy the next 15-30 minutes.

I've always preferred rack effects over pedals. A few pedals for added character, sure. But for me, rack effects are just much better and much easier to incorporate into a signal chain. I own a few dirt boxes, but I still use my tried and true Digitech 256XL from the 90's for delay and reverb. To this day, there's no delay pedal or reverb pedal that can outperform it. I even had that Lexicon MPX100 back in the early 2000's, but the Digitech was stilll better.

If you dont want noise maybe slap on a soft limiter ahead. I've got a loft 400 on mine.

In my mind I keep hearing Ozzy saying “he’s just a hand in the bush” or something like that and can’t remember the name of the song. Was it off No More Tears?

My blackface Intellifex took a shit... anyone know what a common culprit for failure is on these? Like to get it fixed if possible.

Hey friend thanks for the great video. I am looking for a processor to capture a library of Billy Gibbons sounds. From the 70's up to the Eliminator and Afterburner albums especially. Is there something you can recommend to me? Thank again. 🎸

I'd grab a modern digital modeller, so many more options and so much more flexibility.

Do not underestimate that lexicon MPX 100, it has dual effects and the abyss and infinite refurb is a revelation 🎃
