Thanks for the lesson. Guitarist on his second day on the Cajon. I just realized, just as fingerstyle on the former is easier when you tap your foot and allow the thumb to follow the tap, the same concept applies with the Cajon. Tap your foot and follow the beat with the left hand. Really helps achieving independence

Everything about this video is perfect. I don't say that lightly either. Even the type of metronome that you have is awesome. My drum teacher back in 96 said the same thing to me. Wanting to play hard and fast and throw a million fills in everywhere I could as a new drummer does, he looked at me and laughed. He said its how you use the space. Letting the space breathe. I laughed because my dad always use to say it's not what you did, it's what you didn't do. And that can really be translated to music in so many ways. I guess in short.... Less is more and the biggest bands in music are a prime example of that. Not sure if you'll read this but, thank you. Been drumming for a long time, but want to learn the Cajon. This was a perfect start. Btw, what model metronome is that?

Just discovered your channel! I really like that you show your hands from "our" perspective; it helps understanding what to do... 😃 👍 I don't have a cajon, yet this seems practicable for playing djembe as well. My problems though: - You proceed too fast for a greenhorn-beginner; I'd need more time to grasp the groove, especially before getting faster. Would be nice to have longer sequences - it's a bit of a hassle to rewind all the time... - For me it's hard to see the difference between the "ghost"-snare (tone) and the accentuated snare (tone or slap) in the notes; when I hear it, it's already too late! 😁 Just about ok for a short rhythm; when it gets more complex, I'm out... 🤷🏼♀️ Perhaps you could use e.g. a little "x" instead of the notehead (don't know if that's the correct term in English). But maybe it's only me?

That’s just snare drum on the upper and bass drum on the lower in drum notation. If you’re interested in learning all about this sheet music for rhythmic instruments maybe have a look at my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2OQmqloYt2Mi5I Here’s a pretty standard image that might help too. I have a schlagwerk cajon and it does not get those crisp side-snare sounds. The detachable snare seems to be more in the middle top only. Also I'm still not sure whether to hit the bass drum sound with just my fingers or my whole palm.
@rosslmccallum4 жыл бұрын
I recommend hitting the bass with your whole palm. The improvement in your snare sound might just take practicing your technique a little more. It should be a fast slap. Getting the velocity in your hand takes time I think. Also note that when I record cajon I EQ the sound until it's exactly how I like it so it probably sounds better than just practicing in your room.
@nedgey4 жыл бұрын
@@rosslmccallum Thanks. It's hard to tell. It looks like you're only using your fingers for bass, but probably because it's not in 3D. My corners are dull sounding, but I understand about EQ, so that makes sense. Thanks again.

do you have any tips to learn hand independence and to switch from a lead (instrument) to a back up (instrument) im a guitar player
@rosslmccallum3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! Maybe starting off by putting a brush in one hand and playing a groove between bass and snare on your left hand while the right hand holds time (like a hihat). That's how I've developed most of my independence on the cajon. I also have a course that's available to members about just this called "Groove Independence" kzbin.info/aero/PLkFTJa7bYzTi_Hg3oECQDiFioOVukMq4E It's not exactly about switching instruments but independence to keep one hand doing one thing while the other changes is the base skill I would say!

How can we find the groove by listening to any song. example, is it a 8 beat or, 16 beat so on.
@rosslmccallum Жыл бұрын
The steps I think work well are to: 1. Find the downbeat 2. Count the pulse to confirm if it's in 4/4 time or what 3. Feel the subdivision and just tap your hands on your knees. I usually start with 16ths (1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a). By doing this I can find where certain hits are landing in "the grid". 4. Start playing the cajon with mostly just 16th note ghost notes (that makes up the foundation of many grooves) and start to fill in the accents as you hear them. 5. Slow down the track. KZbin has a playback setting to play the video at 75% or 50% etc. speed. I use that whenever I can't hear something clearly or the complexity is too high for me. As I'm writing this out I'm hoping it makes sense. Truth is, this explanation works better as a video. I know you're just new to the channel and maybe you don't want me to jump into a sales-pitch but I do have special members content that covers this and much more in video form. This is the official playlist for my complete course (starts out with free lessons and moves into paid content) kzbin.info/aero/PLkFTJa7bYzTg7_BWxo0EQ3dA8eSY1PKkB If you scroll down in there you'll see "Learn By Ear" parts 1 - 4. It's all about that process I described before and includes some ways for you to practice and test yourself in the videos. If you're interested in this extra material, check out this link: kzbin.infojoin Select the "Cajon Method 1.1 Class" level membership for $5/month and cancel any time. Few questions: [1] Whats the black thing on the side of cajone? Which app? [2] I have a cajone with internal snare which messes things up, I guess. And it is somehow too loud. Did I purchase a bad cajone? www.amazon.in/Clapbox-Cajon-Crate-Design-Birch/dp/B078WV4G3Z
@rosslmccallum4 жыл бұрын
Hey Vineet! The app is called “Impulse” it’s just a metronome app but the design is quite clever. If your snare is messing up a bit maybe some extra foam or something could be inserted to dampen the sound. That’s what I usually do if it sounds wrong. Let me know how that goes! Good luck with your practice!

What should b my metrenome ticking speed for the grove to play
@rosslmccallum4 жыл бұрын
Start at 50 when you're just trying it for the first time. After that, maybe go up 5 or 10 bpm (ticking speed) as you get more comfortable. Let me know if you have any more questions, Sai.

Hi! Tanks for the video! Very Nice! I'd like to know, which program do you use to put the score in the video?
@rosslmccallum5 жыл бұрын
Hey there!! I use Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X.
@cajon5 жыл бұрын
Ross McCallum but can you put de score and the metronome ?
@rosslmccallum5 жыл бұрын
There's no automatic way to do what im doing (that I know of). It requires a lot of manual timing of different video clips ;-) But basically I write out the music in Logic and then record that playing back and copy it into Final Cut and make sure that the notes line up with the sound.

Sai Nath I can double check for you later but I’m out right now. When I don’t know a tempo I use this tool to “tap for the tempo” www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm give it a try!

The last groove is insane, i will work hard to have this skill ! ✌🔊🔊 If i have to ask just one request, the beats are too short in your video, because my ears need time to focus on the sound😅 Even If this video is still on my playlist to learn haha thank you for your work

Does one really have to "learn" a cajon or does it come naturally for the ones who have a good sence of sound and music?
@rosslmccallum3 жыл бұрын
It’s both for sure! You have to always draw on all of your musical experience when you play. The technique takes to get right for sure too.

Cool demonstration.,. BTW ..can you load samples to the drum, so that I can play different grooves..😊👍
