1. ipconfig /all : To get your system network infomation 2. nslookup: To resolve ip address from domain name Or vice versa is also possible. 3. ping : To check whether the host is reachable or not. 4. tracert (Trace root): To get the path or the hops the packet is taking to reach to host. 5. netstat: To identify current active connection in you system.

It's worth mentioning that the tracert example you showed wasn't timing out on the first couple of hops because there was a problem. It's more likely you find your ISP blocks ICMP on their hardware for security purposes. I say this because most people will run that command, see that and wonder if they have a problem when they don't.

Disagree. Learn what the commands do and try them out yourselves. You can't rely on others to provide examples of problems, and for you to expect to be able copy. You have to be able to develop the aptitude to work out which commands to use to investigate the problem. The first obvious command to use is ping and ping to a server on the internet you know will normally respond. Why? Because this will give you an immediate indication of whether there is some kind of connectivity related problem. Now if you ping to host using the domain name, then the ping has to use DNS, so then you start to look at whether connection to the DNS server is working using nslookup. You need to know enough about what is going on so you can work out which commands to use to investigate your problem. You have got to stop expecting to be spoon fed everything, that, I can assure you is not the way to become good at technology. You become good at it by working things out for yourself, by experimenting.
