Hi Luke, I’m 47 yo and decided to learn bass during this awful quarantine in march... I have some music education (clarinet) but I’m total beginner with a fretboard and all the fingerstyle thing. This channel ROCKS and the content I receive in mail rocks even more! Thanks for doing this, I’m already confident on some basics bass lines and I would definetly recommend your channel to anybody willing to learn AND improve the bass. I wish internet and something like your channel was available when I learned music in the previous century (literally). This is a great speed up for any learner and it is not only “‘bout the bass”, but also about music styles and music theory. Kudos!!!

Here's a tip when learning a slap bassline with alot of Mute notes. Just leave most of the mute notes out, first learn the notes then after you get comfortable with it, add the mute notes! This helped me learn Dark Necessities by RHCP! I'm bad at explaining so sorry for the bad english.

@@deltaforce7384 They are also called ghost notes! Instead of pressing on the fret and strings you just touch the strings and strum. It should not make a note it should sound more like a beat from a drum part I forgot the name of.

@thomdornscheidt21574 жыл бұрын

@musicmaniac64814 жыл бұрын
I think you have to hit the strings a bit diagonal and the thumb will then be stopped by the next string. But this is only a theory of mine since I haven't found a tutorial in which that is explained that detailed. I'm just a beginner. But maybe this will help
@pilotreg4 жыл бұрын
If your slapping in the fretboard and its bouncing back up you shout try hitting it a bit more gentley but if your slqpping behind it bouncing is fine.I recommend experimenting with how your slapping and where on the bass, I'll send a link to a video that thoroughly explains the mechanics of slap bass which will definitely help.
@ihavegcc4723 жыл бұрын
maybe try slapping through the string instead of directly at it so it doesnt bounce back up

Awesome video, as a beginner who has been learning fingerstyle I have just realized that I will need to completely re learn how to mute strings to play slap... I have been using left hand to mute strings below (higher pitch) and right hand to mute strings above (lower pitch), it looks like for slap the left hand needs to mute everything. As a player who wants to be able to play many styles this has made me question how I am learning to play... should I adopt a left hand technique that can be used for finger, slap and pick style... or should I change style depending on the song?
@BecomeABassist4 жыл бұрын
Hey @Matthew Donoghue - the left hand does become pretty important for slap, but when I think about it, I don't *think* I do anything differently when it comes to muting with slap vs. other styles of playing. I do have a video all about muting you may find helpful though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIHPpJh_bp2irrM

I have a question. I started playing bass back in 1981 and have been a bass player now for over 40 years. How does one become a bassist? There weren’t any bassists when I started, just bass players. Over time there seems to be less bass players and more bassists. I asked my drummist and singist but neither knew how to help me, although the singist got a bit mad and asked me to call him a microphonist or a micist. We have a horn section, so I asked those guys, but the trumpetist just blew spit at me so I got out of there. Can you help? Being a bassist sounds soooo much cooler than being a bass player. How do I join the club?

Hey friend - you don't need to learn to play guitar before learning bass if you don't want to. That'd be like asking if you need to watch all the Marvel movies before you watch Star Wars. Both are great, but it's not like you have to watch one in order to understand the other.
