In my case it is different, because in my country, Ecuador, the blue Dorco blades that I bought have turned out to be bad, but not the red Dorco ones. Considering that they are both the same ST-300 this should not happen; That's why I'm more than sure that the blue Dorco ones sold here are counterfeit blades. And according to videos I have seen on KZbin, this event is widespread in Latin America, not exclusively in my country.

Russia makes a lot of razor blades, including: Rapira Platinum LUX. BIC Chrome Platinum (Greece) work well for me and my mild DE shaver - Henson AL13. Astra Superior Platinum (Greece) are frequently recommended, I want to try them. Feather (Japan) blades were very sharp for me, they may work for those with thick, dense whiskers.

I like the Astra greens and shaved with them probably a dozen times but I think only once did I not nick myself. I will add the Astra Blue (SS) which are my go to blades and in A-B Sig Solo found he preferred to Astra Green and I concur although still like Astra Green (SP). For a slightly sharper blade just shy of Feather and not as harsh I recommend Gillette Nacet. These out of same St. Petersburg factory as Nacet and multiple other Gillette blades. I am convinced that Feather and Kai blades are just a hair wider (deeper) than most DE blades including those discussed above leading to more blade exposure and a little more blade exposure really contributes to blade feel and efficiency and what most call aggression and even harshness and tendency to wound. In fact blade exposure has a greater contribution to these qualities of “aggression” than does blade gap in isolation or even blade sharpness. I contend this as an opinion supported by many others who analyze razor geometry and its contribution to the mild-aggressive continuum. Henson for example recommends Astra or now RK because of this blade width (depth) concern relative to their close tolerance design. The RK are made in India rather than Russia if that is an issue. I bought a large number of Astra and Nacet blades long before Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine. The factory there is owned by P&G so I’m unsure what buying these blades contributes to Russia per se - certainly less than Russian Vodka or Russian Oil and Gas.
@GregTardif
@GregTardif Жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for sharing and the insight. I’m not sure how I feel buying Russian made goods right now. In my limited scope, the goods that are for sale currently in the country have already been paid for. If the store decides to restock, that’s up to them though I guess
@Mvendrel
@Mvendrel Жыл бұрын
@@GregTardif yes I think you’re right on that. P&G is a huge multinational corporation and I’m pretty sure that whether we buy a few “antique technology” blades made at a factory in Russia or not the world will go on pretty much as it has - sadly including the horrors and genocide in Ukraine. In the meantime I’m not buying anything from Russia and I hope that Ukraine prevails as soon as possible for the obvious human reasons. I’ll buy Russian-made blades again after that if I live long enough to use up the ones I already have ;-). I’m mostly a Schick injector user anyway (for about 57 years!) and my favorite blades are Supply Black Label from Seki City, Japan. I will also admit I like the Gillette Skin Guard on a metal Parker handle and I feel guilty enough making micro-plastic-trash with those cartridges. I did drink Stoli but it’ll be 20 years in October that I’ve not drunk alcohol. So it goes. . .

I think a lot of the reputation derby gets is because they come with a lot of razors and not having good technique leads to bad shaves. Also some of the derby’s that people don’t like are old stock before they upgraded the equipment. Get the ten blade tuck with a blue card in it to avoid old stock. Also the USTA blade by derby is good to.

I used the Astras as my go-to blade for testing new razors for quite some time, until I ran out (not buying Russian blades again until they are out of Ukraine). The Treet blacks are only good for one or two shaves, and even on those two shaves aren't all that great for me. YMMV, but once my pack is gone I won't be buying more. I do like the BiCs; haven't tried the Rapiras yet (I have a pack in my untried stack, bought before the invasion). Agree with you about the Feathers. My favourite at the moment are the Dorco Primes. Sharp, smooth AND long lasting; most blades I can get four decent shaves from, but can take a Prime to six.

@@10floz30minutes I have no problem with their smoothness I just think they are the best on the first shave as they loose sharpness already on the second pass. Nice list, man! I've tested so many blades over these past 6-8 months, my head has spun around the world twice, lol. I will also side with your choice of the Rapira Platinum Lux blades, as those are the ones to beat so far out of everything I've tried. I cannot use Astras or Gillettes (Silver Blue nor Platinum), though; as much as I've tried to use those, I think either my hair or skin is just too rough for those blades and I get chewed up a tad on later passes even with careful usage. I think they are just too mild for me. On the other end of the spectrum, however, those Feathers are so sharp that I have to actually take my time with a shave, even with the Game Changer .86 SB plate...and that razor is fairly slightly mild to low-mid aggressive. My bread and butters so far would be: 1) Rapira Platinum Lux 2) Perma-Sharp 3) Dorco Prime Platinum 4) Personna Red 5) Voskhod And keep in mind, these are all very close, but the Rapira is just effortless to use for me. I have yet to try some other blades (like the Rapira Super Stainless, Super Iridium, Gillette Nacet, and Trig), but I'm going to get around to them at some point! 😊

@@GregTardif thanks for the tip. I will be removing them. I love carbon steel knives for their edge retention so I will be interested to see what these blades are like. Dear Greg, Nice choices over all expect the green Astra; it just doesn't work for me in any razor. It always feels scratchy. Totally agree to the _Black Beauty_ (best design of a razor blade ever) TCS. It's my first choice for the first try with a new razor. Since it's not that sharp, it gives a warning before you cut yourself. I really do like the Rapira Platinum Lux. It works well with any of my razors like the Rapira Swedish Supersteel as well. Good to see you added the blade of honour, the Shavorais fate, the allmighty *Feather* to the list - treat it with respect and it will serve you well for up to five duels at dawn with yourself. Anyway. My favorite go to blade is the _Gillette Platium_ (btw: the _Gillette King C._ blade is just a rebranding of it but fifth the price). It has never let me down.

Loi Titanium is a possibility to include too. I can push the G.S.B. to maybe 14 shaves; and can get not more than maybe 7 or 8 shaves on a New Platinum ST300. Loi Ti still not certain how many shaves but seem to be not very many but smooth and sharp while the individual blades lasts.

Blade preference is a very strange thing, isn't it? There are like a thousand different brands, it seems, and each one has people who claim that they're the best things ever made and other people who say that they are a curse by Satan or something. And here's something else: I'll be devoted to some brand (like I was with Voskhod) and then later decide I don't like it. Weird. Right now I've got Feathers, US made Personnas (I think they're the "lab blues), Merkur, and Derby. I think the Feathers are my current fave. I even shaved with a Feather in my R41 the other day to prove my manliness and bravery. It was fine. No one died.

I like the Personna Comfort Coated "Lab Blues" and Med Preps, Personna Platinum, Bic Chrome, Rapira Platinum Lux, Tiger/Tatra Platinum, Rapira Platinum Lux, German Wilkinson Sword, Treet Platinum, and Vi-John Platinum. I've tried the Treat Carbon Steel blades in a couple of razors and didn't like them. They felt a bit tuggy to me and there was a lot of sting and burn with alum and splash. There are very few blades that I would call objectively bad. Cloud "Bruce Lee" blade was awful

Great video, Greg. Gotta remember to say “razor… blades”, or it can get a bit confusing. No? Otherwise, no argument with your blades, except with the Treet Carbon steel (which seem - to me - to be as rough as guts, whichever razor I use). Treet Platinum, on the other hand, are smooth and efficient. I know lots of blokes like Nacets, but I must have got a bad batch: they were very uncomfortable to use. Honestly, people support blades like they support their football teams. In the end, who cares? Just use whatever works for you in whatever razor you’re using at the time. One thing is certain: just because YT shaver A or B prefers a particular blade doesn’t mean it’ll work well for you. This is life… Cheers. 👍🪒

@@10floz30minutes Thanks for this. I’ll try a different pack of Nacets and see how they are. It makes sense that quality could fall off at the end of a production run (as the sharpening disks - or whatever they use - start to wear down etc). If the new pack is the same as the other one, I guess my Nacets will get relegated to the bottom of the back corner of the blade drawer, along with my unloved Parker and Rockwell blades.
