Regarding feather board as anti kickback device. Kickback is most likely to happen when the workpiece has passed the apex of the blade. This is where the blade tends to lift rather than press down on the wood. If the back side of the blade gets a grip on the side of the blade it will lift the workpiece on to the top of the blade and hurl it at you at tremendous speeds. The feather board is positioned before the wood even engages the saw. It’s short pieces that are most likely to kickback and they are usually not touching the feather board when it happens. Long boards rarely kick back. A riving knife, board buddies, fence mounted feather boards and stock guides are excellent anti kickback devices.

Do you want to know something sad? I purchased that whole Bow feather board system two years ago and never used it. By the time I got it, I couldn't remember how to use it! I was just cleaning up and found it so I'm going to start using it! I do need some paste wax too! Thanks for the reminders!

I can tell you 100% that you don't need a 123 block. Won't be used the majority of the time.

Maybe just depends on what kind of projects you are working on. I use my time almost every time I am in the shop.
