What are the chances of escaping if you’re out of oxygen? What about if your equipment malfunctions? And what do divers really look for in the deadly depths? These are some of the most terrifying cave diving accidents:
1. Parker Turner and Bill Gavin, 1991: Trapped and disoriented in the Indian Springs cave system in Florida, USA. Parker Turner died after running out of air, while Bill Gavin survived.
2. Rob Parker and Dan Malone, 1997: Experienced a dangerous dive in the Kalik Cavern, Four Sharks Blue Hole, Bahamas. Rob Parker perished during the dive, while Dan Malone survived.
3. Deon Dreyer, 1994: Died while diving in Bushman's Hole, South Africa, at a young age.
4. Dave Shaw, January 8, 2005: Died attempting to recover Deon Dreyer's body from Bushman's Hole.
5. Shane Thompson, 2016: Lost his life while exploring the Santa Rosa Blue Hole in New Mexico, USA, with his colleague Mike Young who survived the incident.

Death doesn't scare me, it happens to everyone and fearing the inevitable is pointless. What DOES scare me is the METHOD of death. Burning / death from burns, and drowning are in my personal opinion the worst ways to go. Closely followed by being trapped underground in a tight passage, such as which happened to Neil Moss. Oh NO! I wasn't aware of the death of Rob Parker! He wasn't a man I knew personally, but I was aware of his exploits both in caving and mountaineering / climbing. Sorry to hear of his passing.
@WarriorMongoose

I know thats right! it's definitely the method of death that's most terrifying....the pain and suffering, the mental anguish as you slowly perish. That's why ove always avoided doing things that could kill me. It's not the death. It's the pain. I have a pretty healthy aversion to that nonsense.

Pitch Black dark, trapped in an underwater passage, running out of air. METHOD is everything and I even quit scuba diving because being eaten alive by a shark kept me terrified. I know, I know but the fear for me was real. How abt people left in the ocean by their dive boats.

In a word....no. I did some shipwreck diving off NC in my youth. My deepest dive was approximately 110 ft. I was great. We had to do hours of class time and several check off dives to become certified. We formed a club and always went together in buddy teams. It was wonderful and no one ever got seriously hurt. Safety was number one. Wonderful! As a group we agreed cave diving was too risky. Never did any and never wanted too. At 68 yo I am glad I had the chance

I’ve listened to the story of Dion Dreyer and Dave Shaw from close to a dozen different people. One detail that was not mentioned here was that one night before the dive down Bushman’s Hole, Dave had a dream and in his dream, he saw where Dion Dreyer‘s body was. Then when he actually went to Bushman‘s Hole, he went to the spot where he saw Deon in his dreams, and that was exactly where Deon’s body was. One of the commenters said it seemed like Deon wanted company down there, and came to Dave in that dream.

I was at Florida's Little River Springs one cool autumn day in the late 70s, when a pair of divers, brothers, went into the underwater cave, but later only the elder emerged from the 68 degree water. The elder brother kept trying to go back down, but bystanders held him back. We all sat around and prayed until sundown, but rescue divers who had rushed to help didn't bring anyone out. I moved away after that and don't know if they ever found that young man. The cave was closed after that incident, but has since been reportedly reopened.

In answer to your question at the end...no, I personally would never want anyone to risk their own life attempting to retrieve my body from an underwater cave if I somehow didn't make it back after a dive. I love diving, although I very rarely do any cave diving, bc imo it simply has too much that can go wrong. I plan to enjoy many more amazing years of open water diving, and if by some chance I should ever pass away while diving in a place where body retrieval is risky/impossible, I would be totally at peace with the idea of my body remaining in the ocean I loved so much and becoming part of the natural food chain for other living creatures. Never throw life after death, as one of my early instructors told me, and it has stayed true all these years, to me, anyway. Great docu-series - keep 'em coming, please!!👍👍💗🏊‍♀🧗‍♂👀

Very dangerous to pull yourself upon the safety line...if it breaks and there are turns and twists up ahead you can get lost. The recovering at bushmans hole is the most tragic one...it must have been devastating for the parents of that young man lying on the bottom to be recovered and learn that the diver shaw willing to help them had drowned with his attempt.

In the last story, Mike has gone on record to say Shane was not supposed to stay on land, he just wasn't supposed to go into the cave as far as he did. I think the misunderstanding that Shane wasn't supposed to be in the water is sort of upsetting for Mike. The idea that Shane wasn't supposed to be there at all makes Shane seem very reckless. The truth is, if you listen to Mike, Shane started acting different as they went down into the cave, pushed ahead of Mike, went further than planned, and then when Mike caught up Shane was acting confused and panicked. It is possible Shane was reckless and decided to try and "outdo" Mike then panicked when he realized he couldn't get back...but it's also possible that something happened to Shane - such as nitrogen narcosis or even a medical emergency, and he became confused and disoriented...all we know is that, from Mike's perspective, everything was going right...he and Shane dove down to the area where Shane was supposed to stop and wait with supplies while Mike dove deeper...and then all hell broke loose and the only one who knows why is Shane.

@@Mozart1220 Did you know rescue divers, people who voluntarily take up the mantel to help others, concern their own safety first so they don't become another casulaty? I don't expect anyone to help me, it's their choice should they choose to. If it's too dangerous, they won't do it. Simple. And people make that choice every day to help people when things go wrong. Like I said, I was simply stating the ACTUAL first rule of cave diving and not this missinformation stated in the original comment. There's a bunch of rules and rigourous training that goes into being cave certified. Many places don't let poeple dive withouth certain qualifications because it CAN be dangerous to people that don't know what they're doing or how to get out of certain situation. One of the reasons is to map it out so we can better understand the water flow in the area as well as watch out for water pollution and the like. Another is so we can study these seemingly barren environments. You also need lots of practice in order to be able to help out in the case of people needing rescue (e.g. the Thai soccer team incident). And some people are adrenaline junkies who just really like testing their limits (definitely not me though, lol).

Good job on some fascinating, albeit sad, stories. But please get some terms right. We do NOT breathe oxygen when scuba diving, except for decompression above 20 ft. We breathe air, nitrox (air with a higher concentration of oxygen), or trimix (pronounced try-mix). Dolphins have flippers, divers use fins. And the memorial board at the bottom of the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa has been there LONG before Thompson died in '16. It recognizes the 1976 deaths and a few others. I don't believe Thompson is commemorated anywhere at the Blue Hole, at least not that I've ever seen in my 100+ dives there. I'll be teaching there again next weekend, though, so I'll look.

Your description of what happened at Bushman hole is completely wrong. You stated that right when they were about to leave they saw bubbles and somehow they both emerged. That’s just not true. After the accident, they took a couple days to take everything in and eventually went back to retrieve their gear and when they were pulling their gear back up, he was tangled in all of this stuff.
