I believe these are appointed by the court. Special defense attorneys who usually work in private practice but are asked sometimes to work on high profile, difficult cases (i.e the last 3 attorneys for Sarah Boone before Owens). One of the reasons her previous attorney withdrew is because she doesn't have anymore money to pay them. She can't steal money from her dead husband in jail.

This judge is exceedingly fair & thorough. Kouri has dug her own grave, & although she is presumed innocent under the law at this time, this woman, would, FOR A FACT, interfere with her sons, witnesses, Eric's family & business partners, & most likely cause grave harm to them & then to herself. She has to be protec5ed from herself as well as those associated with the case & the general public at large, as most probably already understand she is in a desperate personal situation from which she cannot recover.
