The reason this is sad is because: 1) an average human walks 5cm/second and can walk 1383287495 cm in 13 years which is the distance from north to South Pole, this shows that Akari and Takaki have drifted to the ends (that they have no chance of coming back together) 2) their first kiss was their last 3) petals falling was an interpretation of human (how they might be together from the start but will never be there ‘till the end and will drift apart) And more. Damn this movie is hella sad but understanding the meanings hurt even more😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

This is me in reality, she was my childhood love/first love way back when we were still kids then she went to other country with her family. Hey kou, I'm glad you found it moving. I love, maybe masochistically, series that are rooted in a deep and complex pain and illustrate the actions the main characters take to get out of their own heads. In 5CPS, Takeshi takes almost no action and let's time do most of the work and that's tragic in itself.
