You forgot probably one of the most iconic shotguns going. The Ithaca model 37. The slickest pump action out there. Bottom loading & ejecting design makes it less likely for crap getting into the receiver.
@IMBrute-ir7gz
@IMBrute-ir7gz Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I second that motion! I own one, but, as a southpaw, if I had it to do all over again, I'd get a Browning BPS for its bottom-ejection and mostly, the tang safety which is the most lefty-friendly safety on any long gun!

Winchester model 1200 and 1300 are the smoothest pump actions out there. They didn't call them the speed pump for no reason.
@johnwillis4706
@johnwillis4706 Жыл бұрын
@@weezem Ever handled a Model 37? I used to think the same thing about the 1200, not so much the 1300. Not only is the 37 butter smooth, hold the trigger back after the first shot and run the action, every time it closes it goes off. That's why a great many police departments bought them. The 1200 is a good gun, I own a few take downs but, the 37 has it beat IMO.
@weezem

@@johnwillis4706 I have and just because you can slam fire it doesn't make it smoother than the 1200 and 1300. I stand by what I say. Ithica 37 is a good pump but it's not smoother than those old Winchesters.

Not all, some Remmington 870 in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge had this habit of a slam rapid fire where if the gun did slam fire it would almost always keep firing all the rounds out. This was mainly in the 1960's around 1964--1966 until 1968 for most of them though a few models in 1969 would do this too, mainly the trap versions with the long barrel.

Model 12's are beautiful and extremely well made guns! I have one, passed down three generations. Made in 1941, chambered in 16 gauge. The only problem is that 16 gauge ammunition has become incredibly hard to find, especially where I live. All of the shooting ranges here in the SF Bay Area only allow slugs to be shot on their ranges. I couldn't find 16 gauge slugs anywhere for years. Luckily they have re-entered production very recently it looks like. So happy to see this sweet 16 re-entering life again!

The Remington model 17 pump-action shotgun. Which they sold to the Ithica gun corporation of Ithica New York and became known as model 37. Was an iconic shot gun bottom load bottom ejection. I have 2 since 1970's I won skeet tournaments 25 for 25 with my right hand and then 25 for 25 with my left with my field piece improve cylinder 26-in ventilated rib barrel. Two and three quarter inch chamber. After winning the skeet shoots I've been appreciated through the trap shoot 25 for 25 we're shooting from the 3-in magline which was 15 ft further back than the two and three quarter line taking the birds like 15 ft out of the house with their right hand repeating the same with the left. Tennessee pheasants killed a few ducks.. Through the special order desk at the Navy exchange island of Guam in my Navy veteran father ordered I think a total of seven Winchester Model 37s. I would have to go and check, I cannot remember if they were actually made in Japan or in Canada mine is sitting in my safe 36-in barrel 3-in mag. The 1970's variation for that 12 gauge was called a model 37a. My brother-in-law loading hot 3-in mag rounds shooting geese with his eventually broke the Tang on the receiver were attaches to the stock. About 300 dead geese later at about 500 actual shots fired. I think he got his money's worth out of that $25.00 Christmas present from his father-in-law. 😂🤣🤣

My Win M 12, 12 ga, F choke was produced in 1931. It has a 32 ' barrel and is stamped "Standard Trap" on the bottom of the receiver. It has seen so much use that the checkering has worn smooth, being passed down through our family. A word of caution if the trigger is kept depressed when using the slide action it will fire on closing...this also makes it rapid fire in a self defense situation. like a Grizz showing up as you're cooking dinner over a campfire.

I have no idea where you took your history classes at, but 1936 was not the aftermath of the great depression. We were in the middle of it. The Great Depression didn't end till 1952. The fact that we had a war in the middle of it took people's minds off of it but there were the same basic number of people out of work on December 7th 1941 as there was on March 10th of 1933. During the wartime economy we didn't think about the depression, but it was still going on.

I'm a shotgun guy. From your list, I would only recommend the average shotgun owner to buy a Ruger O/U or the Benneli. The rest might be good for collectors, but not really practical for a regular use gun. If you want an auto shotgun, there are Browning A5 licensed clones made by Remington and Savage, you can get one for a great price online. If you want a glass smooth pump shotgun, look for a Remington model 31. Both These guns are over looked shotguns by collectors, but they are great values if you want just want a good hunting shotgun! I own a Savage model 745 clone of the Browning A5 and a Remington model 31, both made in the 1940s, and both shoot as well today as they did brand new.

It’s a good one for the person that needs to loose some weight. Lotta good older shotguns on the shelf for reasonable money that got traded by a family member who just didn’t care.

A very good shotgun that is often overlooked is a Winchester Model 25. It is a non takedown Model 12 Winchester. They never came with a vent rib but they shoot great. I have 10 Model 12's even a 28 gauge skeet. Another much overlooked shot gun is the Sears. J.C. Higgins Model 20 shotgun. Hi-Standard made the firearms. High Standard Model 200. Nice thing about the net and you tube is anyone can post a must have list. The plus side is everyone has an opinion on what they consider must have. I wouldn't own any of the 5 talked about here. Benelli super never did live up to the hype, finicky on the type of shells it would shoot and in really cold weather was damn near useless not to mention it hated dirt. The Winchester had a touchy hammer so it was a close when ready to shoot gun. The Ruger was ok but nothing special, same with the Browning. The Wingmaster was to light for me and would twist as I tried to lead my target and lets not even mention 410, good on squirrels I guess. How about 5 guns I know work all the time/every time. Remington 870 super mag. 3 1/2 inch. never finicky about shells, good swinger and easy to find. Winchester 1200-1300, solid feel, great action, shoulders fast, also easy to find. Browning bt 99 single shot, lots of pheasants fall to this one. Simi auto good old Browning auto 5. these work in the field or the duck blind. Grew up around auto 5 and never seen any real problems with them and will say I have seen more birds taken with an auto 5 then any other gun, period. Tons of other guns I can mention but these I can go find most anywhere. Last since it is an opinion piece, I have to mention Mossburg. No I don't own one but have have been around them always. They are sloppy, kind of unwelding, and not a handsome shotgun...but the damn thing work and work hard. Not to finicky about what you shoot threw them, rugged and super dependable, fairly inexpensive and best of all easy to find. thats how I see it from my arm chair

Now days the price of 410 ammo is just stupid expensive! If you can even find 410 ammo. Then a Remington 870 in 410, That's the worst recommendation ever! Remington hasn't made a decent gun 20 years or pre freedom group.

Why not? It's a shotgun, not all waterfowl are shot over water.

Nah........ I don't 'need' another 12 Ga. shotgun. I have my Mossberg 500 (late 1980's manufacture), my Stoeger double barrel 'Coach Gun' (purchased new 3 years ago), and my Remington Model 11, 12 Ga, that was purchased by mt Grandfather in 1935, then my Dad inherited it, and now it's mine (as of 5 years ago). My Model 11 is the easiest pointing/aiming shotgun that I've ever shot!

THANK you!... Great list here. Shotguns are a real weakness/addiction with me. I have been chasing an illusive original Ruger Red for a long time myself. I would also recommend (IMHO, favorites from my collection) the Remington 1100 (from the 80's or 90's.. PRE Freedom Group ownership of the brand) and the Ithaca model 37 Featherweight (especially in 16 Gauge) pre 1986 when they sent production overseas. the only drawback for the last one is you will probably only find one chambered for 2 3/4 shells, but still a solid made, all steel pump that loads AND ejects from the bottom (GREAT for Southpaw shooters)

Hi Jerry. Not that I'm interested in parting with it but as a young adult in the 1970's, I'd already realized recent mistakes I'd made. For instance, letting coveted firearms slip by as a matter of my ignorant youth. The most prevalent was the Belgian Browning, "Dianna Grade" 12ga OU for sale, literally for several years at Skaggs Drug and Sporting Goods in Salt Lake City. "Could'a, should'a, would'a" has plagued me for decades. At $750.00, I could have walked out with it but didn't. Skaggs went out of business and with it the Browning disappeared... forward a very few years, Ruger came out with a new (much lower quality, new kid at school) over/under. My inner self said "take it now" because in part to the Browning mistake, I bought it. 20ga, Imp cyl, modified, non replaceable chokes, blued receiver at about the same price of the Browning. $700.00. It still is in excellent condition and remains one of my favorite upland tools. I'm not a shot gunning socialite but these days, it's the only one I've seen that doesn't have replaceable chokes. As I speak I've found a Winchester Model 12, in 16ga at a local pawn shop that's been reduced $100.00. excellent blue and well cared for stock. The shop's asking $799.00 for it. With these times of political/social crap, I'm reluctant but my (old weapon demon) won't shut up. Anyway , Merry Christmas and be well.

The Browning Auto 5 I own was made in Belgium not Japan. My Winchester Model 12's were made in New Haven, Connecticut. I don't think any of the Model 12's were made in Japan.
