I got hit by a bit of nostalgia watching this. I used to your videos when I was in middle school, and they inspired me to build little projects out of junk and helped fuel my enthusiasm for the outdoors, even when I couldn't actually get outside as much as I would have liked. I'm now in college studying forestry, and recently landed a position with Louisiana Conservation Corps. Woodworking and generally making things have also become really important parts of my life. On the off chance that you see this, I hope you're doing well, and thanks for making such great content.
@IntenseAngler3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this Zachary. I can't even begin to express how much it means to me to hear that my videos inspired you in even the smallest way. Even more importantly, I'm extremely happy to hear that you're now in college studying forestry and pursuing something that not only gives you a sense of fulfillment, but that ultimately helps all of us that enjoy nature and the outdoors. Thank you for that my friend. Congratulations on your new position with the Louisiana Conservation Corps by the way... that's awesome! I really hope that you enjoy it! I am doing well by the way, and hope to get back to posting videos again before long. All the best to you my brother! -John

Good for plugging a punctured gas tank too. While we were out camping up a forestry road in the middle of nowhere we punctured our gas tank while backing up over a sharp rock. Gasoline was dripping out, I simply pushed some Chap Stick into the hole and it immediately stopped the leak and it held for over 4 weeks until we fixed it properly. Awesome stuff.

Great to have you back on. I missed your frequent videos with such useful and low cost tips! One more use would be do a little field maintenance on your multi piece fishing rods by using a thin coat of chapstick on the ferrules...helps keep them from freezing them together.

For all you negative folks, try to remember, he doesn't purport to be a gifted public speaker, "just" a knowledgeable outdoorsman. If you can't add something positive to your comments, given all the great tips he provides, then why are you watching it at all. If you have "better ideas" then why don't you post your ideas instead of denigrating his tips and method of presentation? I really enjoy and benefit your posts John, keep up the great work!

Thank you , that was very good information about chapstick. Especially the make shift lantern. Good job John , I did not know this about chapstick
@theIAMofME11 жыл бұрын
I didn't read all the comments so this may have already been mentioned. But, you can use on hotspots on feet when walking, running or hiking. Just put it where you usually get or feel you're getting a blister. It helps tremendously. I also think that Dr. Scholl's blister stick they make is made from the exact same stuff. Not sure but, works and looks the same.
@savetheworldology11 жыл бұрын
For a broken finger you could pull it apart leaving just the hollow tube and split it down the middle using the two halves as a finger splint held together with tape or cordage. Make sure to hold on the the middle for your first aid, fire and repair needs. :) You might even be able to use it as a fishing float if you pull it apart and tape off the ends. It might even be worth wrapping a piece of tape around the chapstick for these applications.
@kevinpersic614911 жыл бұрын
You are over thinking it. The best way to splint a finger is to tape it to the one and or ones next to it. It will hold it better and you get to save your chapstick for the lips.

IntenseAngler You're truly welcome and you earned them. It's kind of funny that I gave a little bit of constructive criticism to another KZbinr that has similar videos on his channel and it really pissed him off pretty bad to the point that he resorted to name calling. Lol. The way I see it, I have that right to voice my opinion and I try not do it in a way to where I think it's going to really hurt someone's feelings. I just call it as I see it. I made reference to apologizing if I was snoring during his video presentation because it was so freaking boring. It just seemed to drag on and on and on. Nevertheless, keep up your excellent great work.

Cool! My most common off-label use of lip balm is to repair scratched and damaged DVDs. Just 'draw' a couple of lines on the CD or DVD, rub it in with a finger tip, and gently buff it smooth with a soft, clean handkerchief. This works at least 80 percent of the time.

putting it on your nose, cheeks, and ears before extreme wind (say on a boat, or caught in the open) helps stop windburn (the friction of wind passing over your skin at high speeds) ALSO BIG DISCLAIMER: DO NOT USE SCENTED OR FLAVORED BALMS ON OPEN WOUNDS! most of the flavors will irritate the wound, unflavored/scented will not.

Use it as a foot or toe ointment to reduce friction on a long hike. I was almost crippled on a hike in Mexico, and remembered my marathon-running cousin used Vaseline on the back of his heels. I whipped out my Chapstick, put a glob of it between my bleeding toes: instant relief.

2 thumbs up! Excellent video Brother! Those are some great ideas! Especially adding the chapstick to a backpack zipper. I just tried it on my daypack and it glides easily now! I have used chapstick for lubricating my Fire Piston. Anyone out there that might use a fire piston would typically use Vasoline or Petroleum Jelly to lube the piston but chapstick also works well for this and IMO has a better scent to it than Vasoline. Take care Brother! Looking forward as always to the next one!
@moma609711 жыл бұрын
Awesome tips thanks. I do have an add on to the lantern for you. If you melt a tiny bit of tree sap in the center of the can you can mount the chapstick candle and still use the screw to adjust it. By adding a small piece of string to the pull tab you can make your lantern more portable also.
@devonmyster11 жыл бұрын
Well my wife found out this one but ladies if u don't want ur nails to break all u do is put a small amount of chapstick on the and leave it on for a while over time it will strengthen your nails so they are a lot harder to break.

One you forgot, is THE LIPS. WHen you hike, and start drying out. your lips do get chapped. Thats the origional reason, but heres another great tip. As SOAP rubbed on eyeglasses and then dried off will prevent them from fogging , so does Chapstick. You must install it before you leave the house as you must totally rub off the excess. Make the glass as clear as you can with a dry paper towel. What you cannot see it the wax left on the glass. It prevents fogging during rain or sweating. ALSO, I use it for ICE fishing when your breath rises while looking down at your fishing gear. Try it, it works. Even as good as, if not better than soap. OH YEA> and it acts like RAIN X on your winkshield. The rain runs off it and doesnt spot.

We teach Girl Scouts to Be Prepared. Even on a day hike, take along things you might need if you get stuck after dark. Having things like chapstick to protect your lips from sunburn can also have other uses, like starting a fire so others can find you.

Funny story: My husband and I had to walk a couple miles (no money for cab) in vegas, in the summer. 105 in the shade! and no shade! I was wearing sandals and I began to feel the sun on my feet.... sun burn starting!!! well I wipped out my chapstick and rubbed it all over the top of my feet. That saved me some really bad sunburn! So if the sun gets a bit much out there in the wild, you might consider this for your nose, your face, exposed shoulders, or the back of your neck.
