The fifth reason, so so true, been there more than once. First time I asked a guy he gave me a streamer, I caught nothing because I didn't know how to fish it. You guys are great.

Really great points. I'm an old guy and have been fly fishing since the early '80s. I still encounter these situations. It seems like even more than when I first started because of the heavy pressure that fisheries get that they didn't in decades past. The one comment that I would make about tippet size has to do with 6x. The tippet that is made today is much stronger than years ago. I would suggest that going to 6x for smaller flies should be no problem. With quality brands like SA, Orvis and Cortland, I have not broken off very many fish, even 20 plus inchers. The key is learning to fight a fish properly. I see new, and even some experienced anglers, hook and fight a fish with the rod over their head and up in the air. Most large fish should be played with side pressure with the rod parallel with the river preferably upstream. When the fish is ready to come up, then the rod can come up to bring the fish to the net. Anyway, my main point is that I see a big difference between 5x and 6x on flies that are 18 and smaller. Just my experience.

Hey guys. Me and my girlfriend got into fly fishing a couple months ago (Colorado), and this channel has been gold for us help in learning. A few common problems I was hoping we could get advice on fishing in Colorado with high and fast flows this season in the south platte and Arkansas river: 1. We try to follow your advice to cast upstream, but when we hook a fish it seems common the trout will gun it downstream QUICK and we lose tension, and then the fish. How do you maintain good tension pulling a fish in from upstream a fast current when it shoots down? 2. I had my first respectable size hog on the hook last week. It then gunned 80 yards (went to my backing line) downstream and with the high strong flows I stood no chance. Line eventually snapped. Local shops in Deckers advised on 4-5x leader and 5-6x tippet (these fish are smart). How do you balance too much drag with too much pull when reeling big fish on smaller size tippet? Especially in strong moving water? 3. We commonly encounter unspookable fish in Deckers, CO. We literally get MULTIPLE monster sized trout swimming at our ankles wet wading because they like how we are acting as an object to slow the current down. They are extremely used to people, don’t spook away, and seemingly ignore anything we drift at them. Are there any tips for landing fish that are so used to pressure and being fished? Thank you!

1. Try side pressure to “steer” the fish into the soft water on the side of the river, but also sometimes you have to raise the rod straight up and strip arms lengths of fishing line as fast as you can if they come at you. 2. On 6x you might have to chase them downstream which isnt super dangerous in the south platte, while still starting to steer them to the side of the river out of the main current. 3. It’s Deckers brah you gotta wear high dollar camo like Kuiu or Sitka and fish size 26 midges on 9x for the fish to respect you dont you read Pat Dorsey’s books like the Bible? /s

Trout in flowing water feel safe on feeding on biomass of what ever is coming to them ,they don't know the names of the flies they just see and determine what is coming to them they feel safe eating

Hey guys, it would be awesome If you sometimes out up a picture When describing a certain type of fly, English isn’t my mothers tounge though i speak fluently, but i still got other words for the flys so If u sometime put up a picture it would be SO SO much easier to understand What u are describing❤❤ i love the videos, i have been flyfishing for the last 3 years and i love it❤️

Hey guys! I was fishing the middle Provo yesterday and didn't catch anything for 4 hours. I'm a novice (it was my first day EVER fly fishing a river) and after asking one of the old timers in the area he and another person I asked recommended I use nothing bigger than 18 midges. So I got out there and looked up stream, 4 people in sight, I look down stream, 5 others. Lots of people. Spent the first 3.5 hours looking for open spots throwing a rainbow warrior under a pheasant tail. Nothing, I even saw fish swimming around. After 3.5 hours it started to get hot and people abandoned the river like Spencer abandones Wyoming at the promise of free wings. I stayed. 20 minutes after people left, I noticed an occasional splash from jumping fish. I decided to abandon the nymphs and based on what the bugs looked like around me, i went with a size 14 elk hair Caddis tied by ventures fly co. Within five casts I had one go for it, but the hook didn't set. After getting skunked 2 or three times (they took the fly but the hook didn't go in, any reason why?) I finally caught my very first fish on the dry fly! It was a beautiful wild brown trout with full healthy fins. Even though I only caught one fish during 6 hours of fishing, I caught that fish on a dry fly on the Provo River!

I always go against the grain when I see a big hatch, fish rising slurping bugs off the top. Sometimes I'll sit there and watch for a few moments, to see exactly what they are targeting out of the different hatches flying around, if I can't identify it, I go straight to a nymph rig like always. Vary rarely will I toss bugs when I see a big hatch and the trout feeding on the top, but there are times when I say what the hell and toss in a 2-3 bug rig with 1-2 big attractors with a trailing smaller bug. I had once instance where I had walked into a monster caddis hatch, tossed on two foamy elk hairs in different colors and a size 20 Quigley’s midge as my trailing bug. That Quigley’s midge got murdered for a solid 25 minutes of so, then all went radio silent as if all the fish in the pool just vanished. If you havent checked out a Quigley’s midge, get some tied up or get some from a vendor for your box, they are really nice when the hatches are really kicking off.

I live in Canada, and I really liked your episode about the top 10 rivers in your country, but I think Canada might just be better for trout. So could we maybe get a comparison? Guys. How can you wet wade and be a responsible catch and release angler? If it's comfortable enough not to wear waders, doesn't that necessarily mean the water temps are too high for good post-release fish survival odds?

Most of the rivers we wet wade are high mountain streams. Water is still very cool during the summer and never reaches anywhere near 60+ degrees. And when it’s 85 degrees outside, that cold water feels pretty good. Haha.
