5 Common Mistakes When Buying A Bodyboard - Bodyboard School

Buying the right Bodyboard for the right conditions is absolutely vital. Not only to how your performance is affected but also to how much enjoyment you will get out of riding waves with it. When it comes to buying a bodyboard you the choices and all the jargon can be over whelming! Stringers, this core, that core, size, channels, rails and lots of other things in between.
On our most recent Bodyboard-Holidays trip to California we were lucky enough to catch up with legend Bodyboarder and owner of the worlds largest Bodyboard store ‘Ebodyboarding’ we asked Jay what in his 20 years of experience of selling boards were the 5 most common mistakes people make when purchasing a board.
1. Buying a board from the wrong shop.
Where possible always make sure that you buy your bodyboard from a bodyboard specific shop as the person working there will have superior knowledge of the sport and the requirements unique to your specifications.
2. Not considering other brands
Its easy to get caught up in different brands of bodyboard and not be open minded to the possibility of different makes. There are lots of different brands out there so don’t be afraid to try different ones.
3. Buying the wrong size
The size of the board you buy is very important. You may have a different body shape now than when you first bought a board. There are a few ways to ensure that you are riding the correct size board. Always seek advice from the the assistant in the bodyboard shop.
4. Buying the wrong core
As with the size of your bodyboard the core of the board is also very important. If you ride in predominantly cold water you may want to choose a softer core allowing for more flex. If your board is too stiff in cold water you may have issues with edge control. Likewise, If you use a soft board in warm water the likelihood is that your board will be too flexible and decrease speed, control and ultimately, performance. Always speak to the assistant in a bodyboard shop and discuss where you intend to ride the board.
5. Listening to bad advice
Don’t just listen to your friends about what is the best board to get. Every rider is different and what works for them may not work for you. The best thing to do is speak to someone in a bodyboard shop and take advice from them.
Having the wrong board can really detract from your riding experience but if you go into the bodyboard shop with an open mind and take the advice from the professional, purchasing and using the correct board will make you feel great in the water and give you the best chance at making improvements.

@@Ufc12355 the first and probably most important thing is to make sure that you have a board with the correct bouyancy. I suggest that you have a look at something like this; www.ebodyboarding.com/collections/45-46-boards-1/products/custom-x-beast-bodyboard?variant=6344263893019 then it is a matter of following the techniques displayed in our other videos about paddling and catching waves which you can find on this channel. Just don't rush. Doin' any of it really. I wouldn't be saying it if I didn't learn from my mistake years ago. I probably wouldn't be here!! I'm actually going off what I Did learn, buying a board good for warm storm surges later in the year. Now if I wasn't lucky: Warmer water late in summer, my board softer than I was used to, hurricane season, no fins, sweet looking rashguard tho! We all know how important it is to LOOK like ya know what you're doin, duh. If I wasn't in the good shape my much younger self had .... I dunno. Ran, hiked, swam and STILL my legs were like overcooked noodles by the time I wandered out of the foam, just a wrist leash left as proof that I wasn't just some nut swimming in the shore pound.

I'm 48 and haven't bodyboarded since the late 80's when i rode a Mach 7-7 so i been researching and now i'm 100kg (220lbs for you yanks haha) so been looking at a 45" Funkshen 'The Tank' board. I want one of those Custom X 'beast' boards he's holding in the video but i live in south western Australia (near Yallingup and Margaret River if u have heard of those surf towns) and can't find any of them in Australia at all so going with the The Tank funkshen board i reckon. I'm started again because i'm a Support Worker and one client wants to go every shift so i better buy one. I've been skateboarding ever since i quit bb at 16yo after a shark incident freaked me out but now skating has taken its toll on my body so i bought a surfboard and now will get a bb too. If there's anything advice u have i'd like to hear it, thanks

I use the exact same Mori boogie bodyboard that you used when I was in my early twenties. I attached to scags to the board so when I'm carving across the face I can stay up closer to the lip and won't slip down to the bottom of the wave. Have fun I know I always did.

I'm 46 years old, 5ft5" and fluctuate between 113lb (8st 3lb) and 131lb (9 st 5lb), I've only tried once and (by fluke) speed across the water and loved it. I've no idea what style of boarding I'd be able to do, trick wise (just riding the wave would be cool with a view to possibly more, but not a necessity), so what size of board would I need to look at? Here are the international shipping rates from Ebodyboarding (www.ebodyboarding.com/pages/shipping-rates). Here is a useful section of the website called the 'Booger picker' which you can input your info and then boards are selected for you (www.ebodyboarding.com/pages/booger-picker).

@BodyboardSchool
@BodyboardSchool 5 жыл бұрын
@@sivispacemparabellum5476 I'd say hold a board in front of you with the nose touching your chin. The tail should then be touching the top of your knee and then you'll have a suitably sized board. I'd recommend a board around 45 inches for your height. Please let me know if you need further buying suggestions and I'll happily help out. Cheers Rob

You are a bit on the heavier side, so I suggest looking into Triad boards. However, you NEED fins. I’m much older than you 😂, 6’1”, 250. I use 44” boards and Viper fins.

Never buy the ones that look like they made out of stirephome cause it will snap after a couple waves. The good ones are the ones where there's plastic underneath.

If you spend under £40 you can expect the board to bend a lot or even snap. This is dangerous and ofcourse bad for the environment. Pay a little more and they will last for a long time!

I'm short around 5.5 maybe. Hover around 68-70kgs. I've actually gone up to a 41" as my 40" seems a little small. I used to ride a 40 about 5 or so years ago. (I'm now 32)It feels ok but for some reason it feels a little cramped. I'm yet to try the 41. It does feel bigger holding it against me but I don't think it's too big. Keen to try it. The belly button rule is old school and I've never went by it. My 40 is a little above and my 41 definitely above. So forget that rule lol.
