I had the cable fail on the hoist of an overhead crane. The failure happened at the equalizer pulley on the top of the hoist. Inspect as directed in the manual. RTFM!

Very well said, Greg. It's easy to get into the trend of, "it's fine, let's get this done." But you've got to inspect as directed by the manual. I'll see if we can start working RTFM into some of our projects, lol. - Devon

Surprised there’s no mention of a brake slip or a non operating holding brake.. has to be the 2nd most common issue I see as a technician, 1st would be as mentioned “blowing fuses”

Hey, Haassan, thanks for the comment! If five different companies put this list together, I'm sure they'd each have their own rundown of what they see on a regular basis. We pooled info from our technicians, inspectors, and sales specialist to put this list together.

Great stuff. Random question and probably too specific, but would you ever use both flat and tapered wheels on either side the same end truck on an under running bridge crane?
@LiftingandRigging7 ай бұрын
Most, if not all, wheels used in underhung applications these days are dual-type, flat and tapered. This allows them to be used on W (flat tread beams) or S (tapered flange beams). However, when dealing with patent track, the wheels need to be designed specifically for patent track (they will be made of hardened material) and will always be flat.

I went to a gravel pit, crane was down, inspected the thing, notice all the wheels where just wore out, double girt top running hoist, wheels shot and track shot, decided to bring it down to the ground for overhaul, on the way to to the ground this thing looked like a banana, went to the truck got a ball of string, end to end 47"span, 20 ton crane, was a 4""belly my boss told me to get the touch off the truck, cut this thing in half two 50', 50 inch beams, so I started the company boss lost his mind! I, never will I forget the look on the faces when we condemed that thing on the spot hey you see frayed rigging you cut in half, right, same difference.

Hey Joe, thanks for the comment! Sounds like one heck of an experience. Great job bringing the crane down and doing a clear inspection. Gotta make sure your worksites are operating safely. Best, Devon

@@LiftingandRigging sorry but still I didn't get clear about frayed in particular

If its frayed cable that means the smaller strands wound around the cable will be broken and sticking out like sharp thorns everywhere its pretty clear when you see it

Sounds like your up direction contactor/ relay unit is stuck in the on position. Could be a fault on the push button control or in the relay unit itself.
