Always check to see if the alternator belt is broken, missing or loose before you pay a lot of money to replace your alternator. Sometimes the belt has just gotten stretched out, is worn or is broken. It would be a real bummer to replace the alternator when all you needed was a new belt. Always start with the cheapest, easiest things to fix first. Sometimes you get lucky.

Thank you so much for this video. I kept getting told that I had a bad battery, but after getting a new battery and replacing said battery I started to suspect it was my alternator. My car will not start up, no lights no noises no nothing. My alternator died today while I was on the highway so I’ll add a few more things: Sometimes there is no warning and your alternator abruptly fails. When this happens, electrical systems can start going on the fritz. It might start off with your battery light randomly turning on and off or flashing, and your doors won’t lock when you shift out of park (if you have this setting enabled). Your battery light might turn off when the engine is over a certain RPM. If this is happening, your alternator is actively failing. Then, all your dash lights will start flickering on and off, your speedometer and tachometer stop working. Your engine won’t rev over 2-3k rpm. Your transmission (if automatic) starts shifting very abruptly and going in and out of gear. Once this happens, your alternator has already failed and your battery has drained. It might not be likely, but it is possible for an alternator to fail without any warning at all. It just works until it doesn’t. I’d strongly recommend keeping a portable jump starter in your car, they aren’t meant to provide continuous power and they will drain very fast if they’re used like that, but that was also the only reason I was able to make it to an auto parts store today. Sometimes a couple miles worth of power will make the difference between a simple $200 part swap and thousands of dollars for towing, transport to and from a parts store, etc. Stay safe out there and keep up on your vehicle’s maintenance!

But be warned, once the alternator fails completely, the battery will lose its charge pretty quickly. Once the battery dies, your engine won’t run, power steering and ABS won’t work, etc. It’s basically like if you took the keys out while driving

If you need a alternator , but have to wait, you can buy a rebuilt kit if has brushes cheaper , also carry a large size battery n extra thick cable wires , also disconnect alternator or both battery , to safe electricity draw that way quick start ,,, good alternators 135 amps -180 amps , without risk of fire , for high power out puts, 180 amps 320 amps, ,

THE BATTERY IS ONLY USED TO CRANK THE STARTER MOTOR. AFTERWARDS THE ALTERNATOR RECHARGES THE BATTERY AND PROVIDES ELECTRICITY TO THE LIGHTS, ACCESSORIES AND IGNITION SYSTEM.

My alternator pulley bearing went bad causing high resistance and premature wear on my drive belt. Replaced the bearing and all is good. DO NOT USE A CHEAP BEARING LIKE CHINESE BEARING. PLEASE USE A HIGH QUALITY BEARING.

Yeah my car was doing the exact same thing the lights were very dim and when I drove certain areas the engine just felt like it was running week I know it's the alternator because it's been on there for quite some time and every single time I try to start it I had to pop the hood loosen the wires take him up the battery and then put them back on and then it would start again and then it would do the same thing over and over again have to pop the hood so obviously I have a bad alternator

My alternator voltage started to wander when the A/C (activates the fan continuously, 1995 Sunfire) and headlamps are on. Also, the car started to surge. I observed the voltages started to wander just before the surges. Went to a chain parts store to test the charging system. As expected, with no electrical load, it passed the test, so I suggested doing the test with the A/C and headlamps on. Boom, regulator failed the test. I have to add that, before acting funny, the alternator was able to keep 13.8v with all accessories on, including the A/C and headlamps, by when the problems started, the voltage dropped to 13.1 or 12.5 volts, unstable. It had not turned on any warning lights, but you noticed that the lighter socket voltage started to go down, to the point of the phone fast charger to shut down. Over the years, the alternator on this car has been the culprit when things start to act weird, voltage wise. But otherwise, it is great car, will become 30 years old in a couple years!
