Nice field test there Shango066, where you can get far away from cities and man made noise sources. No one uses crystal filters in low cost radios, instead, 2 pole ceramic filters are generally used. Most portable radios use a "converter" stage to reduce cost; a combined RF amo, Mixer, and Local Oscillator, which has about a 30 dB noise figure. In addition, they have insufficient gain in the IF stages to make the weak signals audible. Even if there was enough IF gain, the high noise figure of the converter stage desenses the receiver. The best setup for a good receiver is to have discrete RF Amp, Mixer, and Local Oscillator stages plus, at least 6 poles of IF filtering. Receiver gain should be at least 120 dB, that way you can receive stations several states away on AM.

Also, if you're surrounded by lead paint, that may be reducing signal. I know, it was windy.

Then went to kgo and they were playing a sport game and no local news there too. Yes they have news breaks of all the big news but no local news. Ten years ago both station did do local news. Sad that both are news and talk station made up there mind to drop local news

That flush valve mechanism at 2:17 is the same as the one in my parent's home, which was built in 1960 (correction, circa 1950). And yes, as another poster mentioned, that brass flush valve assembly will still work today after 60 years. Ya shoulda brought that home w'ya and use it as a prop for your TV demonstrations of how things used to be built. I believe the seat makes that funny noise when you drop the lid because it is one o' them comfy padded vinyl seats. And i also learned from another poster here that the tank is properly called a "cistern", thank you, but for most of the people i talk to I'll still call it a tank.

I have one of these and have about the same results. FM is ok, AM sucks, SW picks up really strong stations. I have a talking house transmitter blasting through my house on 1630. The AM hardly picks it up. The SW however picks up images of it all across the dial. This is a cheap and dirty radio. It's like those cardboard radios of the 1970s or worse.
