I shoot with a Profoto A1X on my camera a lot of times and get good results by using the Profoto Soft Bounce accessory. When I need more power than a portable flash can provide, I attach a Profoto B2 to my camera bracket, then attach a Wimberley Plamp II articulating arm to the camera bracket as well, then attach a 12" x 16" white board to the "clip" end of the Plamp. I adjust the Plamp, which can be formed as needed, but solidly, so that it holds the white board angled forward above my camera. I pivot the B2 head back and upward on my camera so that it bounces the light off the white board when I take a photo. It does a great job with providing a nice, soft light on my subjects. This also comes in handy with any light source on your camera when there's nothing else to bounce the light off of.

When using flash outdoors. Do you set your camera white balance to flash mode or say sunny/cloudy mode? This confuses me ty Vanessa….. you are such an inspiration!!
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 9 ай бұрын
Happy to help! So sunny and flash mode are very similar, about 5600K. If you set your WB to those while shooting with a flash (or a sunny day) you’ll get a well color balanced photo (not too warm or too cold). But if you set your white balance to cloudy day while using flash, then you’ll get a very warm look.

Vanessa...when utilizing bounce flash off a wall or ceiling, I recommend attaching an inexpensive black flag with rubber bands or similar so that it prevents unwanted direct light from the flash spilling onto your subject. The flag should be attached to the light head on the part of the flash that faces the subject so that the light coming out of the flash cannot be seen by your subject. This way, you're assured that only the soft, bounced light hits your subject.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy Жыл бұрын
Great idea!
@borgdylan

I found the diffuser to be useful when I cannot bounce the flash. I've got an ex 430 III RT speedlite. The diffuser gets rid of red-eye if aiming the flash at the subject directly even if setting FE to 2/3 of a stop. I still have to compare that to a catch light card which my flash comes with. I found the diffuser useful for closeup macro too since it pushes more light towards the sides, up and down too.

So, when using ETTL and aperture priority, do you need to worry about flash sync speeds. My flash has synch speeds of 1/60 and 1/200. Do I need to be thoughtful of my shutter speed? Or use high speed sync?
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy Жыл бұрын
Yes you always want to be aware of your maximum sync speed, because then you have to go to high-speed sync after that and that lessens the power output from your light. That applies whether or not you’re shooting in ETTL and no matter what camera exposure mode you’re in

Hello Vanessa, great video as usual. I don't know what your experience has been, but I find that when you use on-camera flash in portrait mode and pointing at the subject, you tend to have that nasty sideshadow, especially when the scene is not back-lit. I suppose the angle of the light dictates where that shadow would fall. What do you think?
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy Жыл бұрын
Oh you absolutely do get a nasty side shadow, but that nasty side shadow is very trendy right now
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 Жыл бұрын
You can avoid that by keeping your light above the level of your lens by mounting your bounce cards or other modifier on the narrow side of your flash instead of the broad side. That way, when you tilt your camera in Portrait Orientation your light is still above your lens and not at an extremely low angle and to one side. Of course, that's if you're not using bare flash.
@patrickb4321
@patrickb4321 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonbodden8816, you kind of lost me with your answer. Based on my experience, there is no way that you can flip your flash above the lens in portrait mode unless you are using some sort of flash bracket, which many people find to be quite cumbersome. The flash will always end up on the left side of the lens.

Vanessa, you keep referring to ETTL, but not every flash has it. Could you offer some tips for those of us that don't have ETTL?
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 7 ай бұрын
You could use a light meter or just get a feel for the environments and how bright you’ll need your flash. For example bounce flashing off of a wall or ceiling I know I’ll need a really bright flash, so I would probably start at half power. If I was doing direct flash, even with the lower ISO, I would probably not need a very powerful flash with my subject nice and close to me so maybe I would start around 1/16 and adjust from there.

Depends on your budget and needs. High end I like the Canon EL-1 or the Profoto A10. Mid level the Canon 630 ex ii or used profoto A1X. Budget level I can’t say I have great recommendations but if you have the r6 I imagine you’re going to have a mid to high budget anyway ☺️

Have not mounted a flash directly on my R3, which seems more robust, but even with limited on-camera flash (I should mostly off-camera flash), my 5D3, R6 had already been sent to CPS for loose hot shoe repair at about just below $300 (with Gold membership 20% discount) each time. If I need a flash on my camera for crowded parties, I mount it on a cold shoe on a cage, and use a transmitter to trigger it (and other strobes)

no not every flash does so best to teach without - but even if it does, that's a very flat way of lighting and bouncing off a wall will give you a more dynamic image. That being said, I use a bounce card if there are no walls to bounce off of :-)

@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy Жыл бұрын
Lol what a cute little troll. I’m teaching flash my dear… not how to get a proper exposure without it. I’m showing settings for how I would set my shutter on any given dance floor and I don’t shoot those with a lower shutter speed because I’ll get motion blur, and don’t like shooting them below 2.8 either because I’m usually focusing on multiple moving people on different planes of focus - not to mention a lot of people don’t have F2 lenses so it’s better to teach with a more obtainable example. But even IF all of that wasn’t true, there’s nothing “wrong” about the settings. As opposed to how you wrote the aperture value. It’s written F2. Not f2.0. Cheers.
@djole02
@djole02 Жыл бұрын
@@VanessaJoy Vanessa, I'm not trying to troll. The issue is that the camera that was recording the video had a completely normal image and the ambience didn't look that dark but on your camera it looked so dark it didn't make any sense... And I'm sure other people are scratching there heads too. BTW the f-number has actually a upper case N letter for symbol. And the f letter we use is the symbol for focal length which is lower case letter. So no, it's not F2, it's technically f/2.

Honestly....where have you been all this time? Why did I have to wait 5 Years to get your videos recommended by youtube? (If you've even been that long on here) I've seen videos by Zack Arias about flash usage but even he hasn't made a better tutorial than yours, at least in my opinion.

These are just basics, nothing creative, just a click bait.

Maybe basics for you, but your comment is horribly rude for those learning. Not everyone knows what you and I know sir. Check yourself.
