I really love this 'living history' subset of bushcraft. It's an important (and far more hands-on) way of studying history, especially in eras where mass communication was only just kind of beginning to develop. It puts you directly in the shoes of the people instead of rifling through records of diaries or newspapers. It feels more.. personal, in a way. All that to say, I appreciate what you're doing. It takes a well-rounded individual to pioneer like this--what with building, cooking, mending, and preserving all needing to be done--and it is an inspiration to look to areas of life where we may be lacking. I hope all goes well for you on the homestead, especially in the upcoming winter.
@WesternPioneer4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much I truly appreciate you saying that. I also love the living history bushcraft genera on youtube and I wish there were more of it. I'd love to see a traditional native American channel or even someone do life during the great depression. I hope that as AI begins to take over every aspect of our lives that more people turn to the past.

Born and raised in South East oklahoma, there were lots of these cedar cabins built in the valleys between the mountains. There is still some around if a person knows where to look. My papa was choctaw and called these old cabins sod buster houses man it's inspiring to see someone bringing back some of old hertitage. I can't wait to see what ya have planned next. Btw he says most of the houses had outdoor kitchens because of heat inside, and being cedar, they would go up in flames like gas. in the house, they did have a good wood stove inside for the winters, and he said you could always find a big pot of beans or a stew simmering on that old stove.
@WesternPioneer4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for commenting and mentioning all that. An outdoor kitchen is a great idea, I've been worried about how hot the inside of the cabin will get when I cook. But because a lot of my cabin is cedar when I do cook inside I'll have a big fire extinguisher behind the scenes just in case.

From what I see you are using cedar trees for your build? They last a long time! This cabin reminds me of pix I’ve seen of cabins built 200 years ago out on the prairie. Either the people who built them or the cabins themselves were called “Sod Busters”! You were smart to build near a forest. Some were built from adobe like clay. Looks like you will be ready to live in the cabin before winter. Thanxz

I am so curious as to what area you're in. Im from Texas and my grandma while growing up lived in a few different types of dwellings. When her family first came to Texas they lived in a dugout. She was born in the dugout. They lived in a sod house up until she was 11 then they moved into a house like the one your building. The kitchen was separate from the house. She said it was for 2 reasons . It was too hot in the summer and if the kitchen caught fire they only had to rebuild it and not the whole house. They also added onto it as the family grew. She was born in January of 1900. She also said people were still living in dugouts well into the 1920s. Things were still wild west like then in parts of Texas.
