Next time you go on a trip like this take some of your lump coal you have for the shop. If you put a piece in before bed it will burn all night. We did this in our tent stove when I was younger hunting with my stepdad. It is nice to wake up in a warm tent and you don’t need as much wood or wake up to add more during the night.

The distances involved when hunting caribou seems overwhelming at times and I understand why you need to follow them and try to ambush them. However, with all of the sign around and near your camp it might be a could idea to plan your camp near an more open area and then spend a day watching and glassing nearby. I've never hunted caribou but I've found over the years that the more that I posted on a good trial or bottleneck in the woods, the more deer that I'll see. And most of the more successful whitetail deer hunters that I've known have almost always been those who scout before the season and pick a good spot (taking into account the wind that day) and spent the day quietly sitting and watching. Finding the shed was pretty cool, and I can't wait to see whether Ariel decides to can them or freeze them! Caribou antler alfredo!!

Eric, your bolt freezing issue is probably due to grease/oil that’s on the gun currently. Clean the bolt completely of any lubricant as it will hold water and hence, freeze. I use Brake Kleen to remove and lube or solvents that can freeze- carb cleaner works well too. Just do it in a ventilated area. Run your bolt dry in below temps and I use a light touch of sewing machine oil in warmer weather.
@Hawkeye308Ай бұрын
Also, the tent can be pretty humid (relative to outdoors) so water may condense just a bit on it and then when you leave the tent it will freeze. It might be worthwhile to leave the rifle outdoors overnight so it doesn't get exposed to the humid air.
@canamrider7195Ай бұрын
And I'd take that bolt apart and polish the surfaces. Oil don't freeze except in extreme cases. Some moisture got in there for sure. That would have been maddening to have the rifle not fire with a bull in the crosshairs.
@kevinheske7783Ай бұрын
No outside temperature is cold in the tent is warm that creates moisture on all parts of your rifle that is why your bolt froze up, been there done that if possible leave your rifle in the cold.
@danmworshamАй бұрын
I expect it's ice crystals coming off the track and getting into the action and trigger. It tends to happen when you have your rifle slung across your back while running at speed on a sled. I've had it happen to me beft, and it doesn't have to be that cold for this to happen.
@andyroo8592Ай бұрын
There might also be arctic grade firearms lubricants available, pretty sure if they are a real thing most Alaskan gun shops will have it.

The foggy & snowy weather you guys had reminds me of the time I nearly got lost on a mountain in Yellowstone. I was in the backcountry of Yellowstone during an off day from a week long wolf research expedition. The day started a little cloudy but nothing to worry about. I wanted to get out “hiking” in my snowshoes. As I started to head up the mountain the beautiful skies quickly turned to grey, snowy, and extremely foggy! I should have turned around right away but of course I didn’t. Sometime later, I realized I had gotten off the posted path and didn’t know where I was. My hike was supposed to be short and sweet so I didn’t carry a compass, emergency locator, or other emergency equipment. There wasn’t any cellular service in the area. I did my best to follow my previously placed footsteps down the mountain, but because it was snowy and foggy the snow covered my footsteps and I couldn’t see very well. Many hours later I happened to see the cabin the research crew was staying at off in the distance. To say I was happy I didn’t die alone on the side of the mountain was an understatement!! Wow, I hadn’t thought about that day in forever until I saw your video! Looks like you two had a good trip

At that time we were living off grid in Marion, NC. We had dreams for many years prior to us finding yall to move to alaska. After watching your channel as our nighty family TV show for about a year we as a family decided to do it. We sold everything in April this year and drove 5k miles to Alaska! We've landed in the valley and plan to move north of denali in the future. Yall have been such a huge and pivotal inspiration to our little family, and you never fail to inspire! And we as a family want to thank you for sharing your daily lives challenges and triumphs with everyone. We hope maybe one day our paths will cross as yall are so like-minded to us. Coming from the Canadian army, leave your rifle outside as much as possible and cycle the action periodically. Instead of using an oil based lubricant you can try graphite grease. It’s a powder and a little goes a long way. At -70F it won’t freeze but it will feel a bit sluggish. We enjoy your peaceful content. Keep it up!

Hey Eric, the shed is good for stirring the stew Lol! But they'll look good mounted on the new building, what a find! 😮 ....I myself have never been on a snowmobile, lots of motorcycles in my life, but they seem just as awesome and just as dangerous, shot many a deer in my life, but they wanted to get back at me by jumping in front of my Harleys, hitting two during my life, fortunately I never got seriously injured, but they did lots of damage to the scooters, but after trimming off the coagulated meat, ate them also! 😋 Be safe, out there, miles from anything...
