Hi Grace! Please can you do some research into how boycotting palm oil will actually cause more harm to the environment? Oil Palm is highly productive crop which is capable of yielding more oil from less land than any other vegetable oil in existence making it the most efficiently produced type of oil. Oil palm produces about 35% of the world’s vegetable oil on less than 10% of the land allocated to oil crops. Rather than seek to abolish the crop altogether, Western activists should focus on preventing further deforestation, rehabilitating damaged habitats, and ensuring that impoverished farmers can be optimally productive on their land that has already been cleared for agriculture. This means rejecting what Greenpeace calls “dirty palm oil” and instead insisting on sustainably produced palm oil from accountable and transparent farmers committed to zero deforestation. A recent study from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) showed that banning palm oil would likely simply push demand for more land-hungry oils such as soy. If it is replaced by much larger areas of rapeseed, soy or sunflower fields, different natural ecosystems and species may suffer. IUCN Director General Inger Andersen said in June: “Half of the world’s population uses palm oil in food, and if we ban or boycott it, other, more land-hungry oils, will likely take its place.”. To put a stop to the destruction we must work towards deforestation-free palm oil. Malaysian producers are moving towards strains of oil palm that can produce more fruit with less land, meaning there is less need for further land clearing and deforestation.

The reason palm oil is used so much is because it's the oil plant with the highest yield. If we all boycotted palm oil, whichever oil it was replaced with would require more land and so more deforestation. The issue is fighting for more sustainable palm oil, not switching to something worse.
@hithisisseb5 жыл бұрын
thedarkness111 that’s very interesting! Is there anything we could change in our lifestyles to help?
@thedarkness1115 жыл бұрын
@@hithisisseb It's probably more a case that we need to lobby governments for either a decent labelling system (confirming the palm oil used is from a sustainable source) so cnsumers can make the choice, or more strongly writing laws which make it mandatory for palm oil used in products to be from a sustainable source,
@rixt1355 жыл бұрын
If you cut out palm oil and switch to more whole foods then it does make a positive change! Agree with you that switching to other plant oils is not the solution though
@thedarkness1115 жыл бұрын
@@rixt135 A lot of food we eat cannot be made without oil, Grace showed in this video how hard it is just to not eat palm oil, but many of the products she could eat still would have had other types of oils in. I challenge you to eat a 0 oil diet (especially alongside being vegan which is also important for the environment).
@sophiehobley8285 жыл бұрын
Surely cooking from scratch would reduce use of oils (I appreciate it wouldn't eliminate them but it seems like it would be a lot easier when you're avoiding processed foods)? A combination of changes in laws around sustainability and individual efforts would presumably lead to the best outcome? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - you seem to know about this stuff and I don't, I'm purely going on intuition, and that's not always a path to the right answer!

@evasauces134 жыл бұрын
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has been criticized by civil society for “greenwashing” palm oil growth and it has been proven how it may not be so sustainable , I wrote an essay on this topic so here is some information that I researched: It was discovered in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea that, from 2001 to 2016, about 40% of the area located in certified concessions suffered from habitat degradation, deforestation, fires and have been subject to more tree removals than non-certified ones (Gatti et al.). Certified sustainable palm oil is becoming the dominant form of production in food corporations like Unilever and Nestlé which are very sensitive to their brand image and are able to provide “sustainable” palm oil for their consumers. However, despite certification and its efforts to be sustainable, social and political struggles are rising over land rights and they hardly transform a large-scale monoculture into a sustainable form of agriculture.

Thank you so much for making this really informative video. I'm truly shocked by the statistics and also how many products contain palm oil!! Definitely to research it more and check my products!!

your content is really great, you seem very honest and down to earth 😊❤️ if you're up to doing more videos with environmental content, maybe you should try 5 days without driving your car 🤷🏻♀️
