Solid tips. In blues there are some bends "out of tune", but what this guy is trying to say is that you want your bends to be what you are hoping them to be. If I'm trying to achieve a half note bend and do a quarter note bend, that means my bends are shit even if the quarter note bend in that particular place might fit well. If you can only walk and someone teaches you also to run, are you going to say that your freedom of movement is being restrained by the running tips.

Very good lesson. It really is okay to bend out of tune as well as in tune. Bending in tune is a good rock and country technique. It is also good to not bend at all sometimes.
@EclecticEssentric5 жыл бұрын
Also, do not set your guitar on fire while still playing it, without proper forethought. Always good stuff, TZ.

Hi Tommaso, Excellent video. Thank you very much. You present very good suggestions on how to be a better blues player. I will certainly utilize your kind recommendations. Be well!

I've subscribed, but dear god, the blues of a bend is in the microtone!
@MusicTheoryForGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but how are you going to learn to bend microtones if you can't even bend a half or a full step consistently? ;-) (of course, I'm not referring to you specifically)

Hi Tommaso, great video but you bend up properly than you sligtly release it before to mute the string and go to the next note, this can be considered the 6th deadly mistake on blues
@TommasoZillio10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting on that. It's not a mistake: I'm actually doing it on purpose because I like the sound of it. If you like this or not, it's a matter of taste. :)

American Blues, all about the Blue Notes. It's not on the piano, it's not in notation, it's hidden in the bend. It breaks the rules and we like it that way.

With a bit of exercise you will learn how to bend in tune, it's actually easier than it seems: you only have to "calibrate" your hands and then it will feel natural.
@kristijanmedved29709 жыл бұрын
Mance Rayder its actualy fine to overbend sometimes and be flat if you know how to use it :) but first thing is always to learn to bend them right in tune, and after years of practice you can learn how to play things wrong propperly xD

Over bending can sound good depending on the situation. Guthrie Govan and Josh Homme tend to do it a lot.

If I could give 1 blues tip, It would be... Play the guitar like you are singing. Have breathing rests, call and responses in the phrasing. Tell a story like a vocalist would. Maybe start soft and then add more tension. Or the other way around, come in super agessive and the lay it back. But above all, play guitar like you are singing. If you don't play like that... For me that "is" the differents between a "great" blues player and some kid wanking the guitar. Also out of tune bends are part of the blues sound, like bending from the b3rd to the almost 3rd or from the 2nd to the almost 3rd. But these bends must be out of choice. Sometimes I will even do a whole step bend to a note a bunch of times in a row, but every other time I will properly bend just I hair short of the pitch. This is ok because it has feel, style, attitude and sounds vocal. Just like how its ok to play a little out of time sometimes... Or play behind the beat. Singers also often do those things (especially blues or soul singers) All good things to have if you want to "really" play the blues

Hi, i'm asking myself if i need lighter strings for that bend. What do you use on this strat ?
@TommasoZillio8 жыл бұрын
+Dino Trifunovic It's just a matter of habit. I use .10-.46 on most my guitars (11's on the Les Paul)

This guy is giving very ropey information. The interval between 2 adjacent strings at the same fret isn't always a 4th. Between the G and B strings it's a major 3rd. Could be confusing for someone who doesn't know better

Blues is about emotion, all kinds, and you can use out of tune bends, or two notes ringing to express the emotion you wish to portray, or you are feeling. Think of it as controlled dissonance, grating that coerces a feeling or emotion out of yourself or others. IT'S ALL ABOUT EMOTION, NOT TECHNIQUE!!! Lose the emotion and the music dies, as you can hear from all the "shredders" out here that can play their "scales" really fast, but sound lifeless, because it is! Learn to play a lead with few notes as possible, and work those notes, bend, vib, trill, ppp, FF... THAT is what it's about, less is more. (A David Gilmore fan).

I am a Gilmour fan too. Many of my students are too. You know what is the FIRST thing they have to learn to sound 'like' him? Bend in tune! :-)
@philrobertson27057 жыл бұрын
MusicTheoryForGuitar - Agree. Gilmour is a master at bending. Always stays in tune, always repeat bends are to the same tune, one may be +1 higher, or -1 lower but also to tune. Even his half bends are 1/2 tune (0.5). Not (0.45) or (0.55), always (0.5). I consider this the hardest part of playing Pink Floyd songs - correctly. (Note: Some people can get this naturally, they hear, they play. Others have to work at it. I'm in that second camp.) p.s. Thanks for the tips.

Bending in between the flatted 3rd and the 3rd is the secret of blues guitar, it is the border between major and minor tonality. That being said it doesn't really work well with the other notes that well.

well here is the thing the original blues players played from the heart and they played very out of tune and sloppy but that was the real blues and as time went on people tried to clean it up and play more precise. That is all I'm saying.
