Michael, good channel, good information, my takeaway here is don't solve a mold problem in your basement or crawl space by painting over or covering up the wet wood or CMU block. Dry it out first and attack the moisture source.

Okay, but what about taring the outside of the house. I tarred and used 12mil plastic along with french drains and this has stopped my water intrusion but not the crawl space moisture. I sure hope that I haven't screwed it up by using the tar on the outside of house YIKES !

Will encapsulating the vertical walls with vapor barrier send more moisture into the wood that rests on top of the foundation walls (and cause rot), since it has nowhere else to go now?

So it doesn't sound like the 'repair' itself is necessarily destructive, but the method in which it is carried out. Covering things up, especially mold, is not a repair! I plan to use KilZ on my joists and subfloor underside AFTER i've remediated moisture and any mold present. I also don't see the value in a waterproof membrane like drylok if encapsulating a crawlspace with foam board and/or a vapor barrier.

I recently bought a house and it has a newer long wood beam along the floor in the crawl space with several support jacks. The previous owner did not give any information about why or who installed it. It is around 75 % humidity. If I encapsulate with a dehumidifier and it reduces the humidity to I believe you mentioned 55 % humidity in other videos , will those support jacks likely fail as you mentioned in this video? I live in central Illinois and have humid weather in spring and summer. I have not found an experienced and reliable company in my area. I would like your advice so I can know if their recommendations will be safe and not cause further problems. One companies in this area are saying to vent the HVAC air from inside the home to the crawl to reduce humidity, and then put in an exhaust vent. I do have a new HVAC system. What would you recommend? Thank you so much.

How long it takes to dry the wood first ?

It really depends on how wet the crawl space is. Usually it takes up to a few weeks, but we have had some cases were a month or more was needed to properly dry the crawl space out.
