Hi Paul. I have some DF plants that were started as skinny cuttings, topped the trellis and started putting out fat growth similar to your plants. I dont want to cut off these fat new growths cause im hoping to get fruit off the plant this summer, however am concerned about the long term outlook for the plant having such a skinny main stem 'pathway' for all of the nutrients to get to all of the new growth in the next few years. Do you have any plants like this? Any issues years down the road? Thanks!

It’s funny how I’m reading this and literally have the same problem with my two dragon fruit plants. In the summer of 2024 I built a trellis in a 35 gallon pot and planted a Sugar Dragon and an Ecuador Palora cutting on opposite sides of the trellis. Well, they liked their new environment so much they took off extremely vigorous. The new growth on both of the plants is very fat; to the point that you couldn’t tell the difference between the Sugar Dragon and the Ecuador Palora if I was to take a cutting from each of their new growths. I was very surprised and had never heard of anyone else running into this problem. Normally, it’s very easy to tell the difference between these two varieties. The only way you can pick out these two plants now is to look down at the original cutting growth. What can I do to solve this problem? Will growth eventually turn back to normal? Lol

They will thicken up over time. I have some seedlings that have skinny bases like our Linda’s Red and they do fine with skinny branches at the base. They are slowly getting thicker in time. You are right, those branches will probably fruit, So keep them if possible

The spines are also an indicator to determine the variety. They sound healthy and if you need any help, send me an email with a photo or post to our San Diego Dragon Fruit group on Facebook. We are there to help and have an ver 30,000 members

Do you know why the base of the plant splits? I have 2 plants that did that. They’re both still growing good

@@Backyarddragonfruits I have a few that have split at various points. Without pictures its hard to say whats causing it but high likelihood is that its taking on more water and nutrients than it can handle and literally bursting at the seams. Does the plant look at all bloated and fat? If thats the cause theres not really any issue, it should heal over on its own.

I need a good source for pumice and biochar. I’m in South Orange County. Do you have any recommendations? Also, you need to do a video on dehydrating dragon fruit that sounds yummy

Pumice is at most nurseries in 2 bags. You can buy bulk at many soil stores. bio Char is harder to find, I get mine at a local soil store in San Diego. Black Owl is my brand of choice when I can get it
