I didn’t know how to draw before I started tattooing. Now I make 6 figures a year tattooing. If you want it bad enough it will happen. I did have to learn how to draw but that being said. I think learning how to spit shade tattoo flash as the most quintessential Technique you should learn to become a tattooer

This actually gave me some motivation to actually get into tattooing. I'm not that big into drawing, nor am i really good at it. I'll have the urge to draw every few months, but usually it's a little cartoon that I'll look at and copy, not trace, but draw by looking at said image. And now I'm considering picking up a tattoo machine and doing a few tattoos and see where it goes

Do you think tattooing could be done as a side hustle?
@DesignInNature2 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanfigueroa1012 If you don't feel the urge and desire to be drawing all the time already, tattooing for a living might be hell on earth for you brother. I would advise finding stuff (images) that you find to be really cool and inspirational to you, and taking the time to draw/copy them exactly as they are. Take no less than 6 hours on every drawing, and ideally more like 15 to 20 hours in multiple sessions for a fully finished drawing. If you find it boring and a chore and feel like abandoning the drawing unfinished after the first 3 hours, then it's probably a sign you will not like Tattooing. Prepping a design to tattoo it unto someone is a really detailed and time consuming process. Your planning of the different stages of a tattoo has to be on point, because you will many times complete bigger tattoos in multiple sessions. The one constant among all of the best tattooers I've ever come across is that they all draw all the time. While they watch TV, on a napkin while they wait for food at restaurants, while they chat with you at home over beers, while they wait at the doctor's office. These days I see everyone on their iPads drawing in procreate all the time. Again, if that sounds tedious... you might want to rethink it. Drawing for fun when you feel like it is totally fine. You have the pleasure of doing it when you want to. But once you take on the responsibility of doing it for a living, and more so for tattooing humans... make sure you are ready for a serious commitment.

Fuck yes brother, i could draw in highschool. Fell off because i was forced to go down a dumb job route. Big bro went the tattoo route and has took me under as an apprentice. Best thing iv done, still learning to draw again but im on my way to make money from tattooing and getting clients later this year !

I really want to get into tattooing so for years, I have been practicing doing tattoo designs for people. I will ask them what they want, they will give me a detailed run down or a vague description of their idea, I will go through Google and collect relative pieces for their design and we continuously go back and for till they are satisfied. I do it for practice, so I don’t ask for any payment. So yeah, I have a decent ability to make up a design on the spot. But your advice has given me some good ideas. So thank you very much for that.

right, I took a photo of my hand for a reference and when I presented a portfolio to an artist in my town and he basically told me I wasn't a real artist because I didn't draw it with no reference and "real artists don't need references" safe to say we were not a good fit anyways.

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been getting more into traditional and realistic designs from doing mainly cartoon-style work (looking for apprenticeship) and I’ve been going from scratch. But it is so much easier to trace the realism stuff from photographs, and it’s also helped me better know the proportions for other styles and designs I want to try outside of realism! Thank you for this video ❤

Question: do you think that having a mostly digital portfolio will hurt your chances of getting an apprenticeship? Over 90% of what I do is digital on Procreate, mostly because I invested in the iPad as opposed to having to buy consumable physical supplies.
@Tattooing101 Жыл бұрын
It shouldn't because these days most artists will be using procreate anyway as their primary medium for making designs. But that could depend on how 'traditional' the artist in the shop you're hoping to apprenticeship under is.

Thank you for this video, I was recently 'let go' from my previous apprenticeship because I couldn't "draw from scratch" and it made me question my artistic ability. Admittedly, I'm not great at drawing from scratch, but I have been practicing realism for years before I ever approached a tattoo shop with my portfolio. I was getting mixed signals because he liked my realism but also wanted to see my "artistry". I don't think it was intentional, but it felt like he tried to push my style to be something it's not. :/

Skulls are actually relatively easy when broken into basic shapes, it's essentially a sphere with things protruding from it. Hard to tell not show I would look up some artists showing how to find those basic shapes and build from that.
