I started playing at 15 self taught didn't have money for lessons and we didn't have no internet in the 80s and I'm now I'm 50 and I hope to still be playing 71 or 80 God willing .. my hats off to you my friend for still learning playing good for you

@@arthurhill2388 God bless you, and Mr. Larry, you too, who also replied and plays from 15 thru 50 now! Congrats guys, ... I love it!, ... I am now 66 yrs. young and started taping and banging on my grandmothers (who pretty much raised me) washing machine And also at the dinner table while waiting for the food to be ready when I was about 8 or so and kept at it into my early teens bugging mom and dad, Grandparents anyone to please get me a drum set because I was a drummer! lol, finally my dad brought home a used set for a gift one day and boy was I surprised and happy and couldn't wait to play them BUT there were no cymbals except there was a Hi Hat with cymbals so it was good to start with! Later I remember walking home from where my friends stood there was a pawn shop which once in a while had drums of various kinds, sometimes a set and also cymbals would come through once in a while as well but this one day I was looking and noticed a used Zildjian 16 inch crash cymbal made in Turkey and I didn't know much then but the shop owner was friends with my grandpa and said that I had a good sense for the sound, it was one of the best made and prolly wouldn't last there long so I looked at grandpa who loved me so much and he said well do you want it? Heck yea!!! And it was part of my set and other drummers for over 30 following years loved the sound and offered me money for it! No way I said, I loved it too and it was a gift from my grandpa, a hard working roofer in NYC for many years and had worked on the WTC (World Trade Center) Project as it was being built. Anyway I still have a drum set set up in my room but the last 18 months or so have not played because of a shoulder problem I expect to go because Jesus took our pains and sorrows and by His stripes we ARE healed says the written Word in Isaiah 53: verses 4 thru 6 and on, MAYBE BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS I AM PLAYING ONCE AGAIN! Thank You Lord Jesus!

I started playing at 8. And at 13 years old was playing in bars and clubs. I did take band also so I no how to read music also. Had a scholarship to U of A in Fayetteville Arkansas but had an agent for the band and the agent kept us busy, said I would go out for a year then go to college, well we no how that turned out, I'm 52 now. Quit playing in a band at 46. Became a job. That's hard for some to understand all they say is didnt u make good money, yes I made money but I loved playing the money just a perk, this band made it a job to made me not happy to play. So now I just bought 7 piece TAMA maple shell star series sound incredible, and the new Alesis electronics, and my wife found a set of Alesis at yard sale no mesh heads but had the surge symbols $40, people calling ur playing again everybody no I am not this just for me. It will be the 1st set of drums I've ever owned that will not be in and out of trailer in and out of clubs. 71 years old LOVE IT. Hope I'm around to still alive and able to play still at that time. God Bless You, Your the man, for sure. My daughter plays. My granddaughters 1 is 6 1 is 4 they can play been teaching them since 2. But 71 WOW incredible accomplishment for sure. Keep it going and keep me up to date on you still playing from time to time. 👍😎🥁🥁🥁🥁🤘🤝🙏🙏🙏

@@arthurhill2388 great story my friend I'm 52. Keep it going I started learning myself but then played Band in School ( yes band nerd as they used to say ) so I can read music. I am always amazed by drummers who r self taught, granny raised us to, or any musicians that are self taught. 1 musician I'm still amazed by was are lead guitarist, you name the instrument doesnt matter he can play it and play like hes played it for ever. Here's a song and he can play it. Friend that's a piano player I no can hear a song and play it back on piano but that's just that instrument. And you being self taught is incredible, love it , it blows my mind. Great story my friend, and keep it going and keep jammin. You no what I mean when in my other reply I said it became a job and the fun was gone for me. Loving it again, will not play in a band just my kids and grand kids, they love it makes me love it. So they put the fun back into drumming for me. Maybe they will join band or not there decision but being self taught is the only part that I think is the greatest think and It is killer that you did that you obviously love playing and in the END that's what really matters, great story great job to you. Awesome. 👍🤘🤝🎶🎵🎶😂🥁🥁🤜🤛🙏🙏

I've been drumming now for about 3 months and have been living on KZbin watching drum lessons. I've been learning some hard crazy fills that are fun to play by themselves but can't figure out how to put them at the end of a grove. It's so great knowing I've always got you to show me things that are really musical and that I can actually use in a lot of situations. Thanks buddy.

Excellent! You are a great teacher! I have been a church drummer for 34 years, and the last lesson I had was in high school. I have developed many "habits", some of them not so good. I have been at a plateau for quite some time now. I look forward to watching more of your videos and replacing some of my sloppy techniques with polished ones. Thanks for sharing these!

Great little lesson. Been playing 30+ years with a sizable break in the middle. Been trying to unlearn, relearn, and fix some bad habits while finessing and rehearsing the little things. I'm a fill monster and this is good to keep me reeled in and on point. Take pause and revisit the baby steps.

Bought a kit , as a second instrument, about five years ago. The word got out and I actually got a call to fill-in for two sets in place of a band's regular drummer. Anxious to be viewed as solid, and replaying in my head all of the KZbin tips , I pulled Pat and Debbie from the toolbox. Sparingly.....but know that in my 'big moment' Stephen, you were there with me....ty..... and fyi- the band leader was pleased overall.

Really happy to hear you keep the focus on music, I'm a bit older, I started playing drums with an LP then an 8 track...8 track was better because the kick didn't make the record skip! I played music in school but not percussion, that gave me 2 scholarships in College and allowed me to play drums with my attempted music degree since I didn't do well in Business. Music is why we play and drums are my first passion to play with music, I started drums when I was 11, I am almost 52 now...so ya been a minute and your videos are an inspiration to so many and thank you for keeping at it!! Ringo was a master at fast "I think I cans". He did them all over the place in Beatles' tunes. My theory is that, as a lefty playing a right set-up kit, both his wrists were probably equally strong. Therefore he could pull those fills off without one hand lagging behind.

I liked your comment about not putting an exclamation mark at the end of every sentence. I tell young drummers that all the time - and anyone who will listen - that a lot of drumming is about punctuation, so listen to the phrasing of the song - and even the lyrics - to judge just when a fill is needed, and if one is really needed at all. The perfect fill - IMHO - has to lie somewhere between Phil Rudd and Phil Collins! :D

The building blocks of extended language for drummers. once you understand a note and a verb, then you can speak the language. I love these fills, and I can burn my brain out trying to remember all of the times I've heard them. Almost certain every drummer had used these or a sight variation. Thank you for the lesson, Ace's!!!

Great lesson! I've been playing off and on since high school, but I suck now. Can still play, but, don't make enough time to play. I can play what you demonstrated here on a set today.

Hi Steve I have just come across you on KZbin. I have been playing for band's on & off for years but have had a 10 year gap & only helped out a band ones a year. I have a full gigging kit (packed away in the spare room) & an Electric kit Roland TD kit. I find it hard to practice with my job but after seeing how you put across practicing I am going to try & get on the kit for one hour every evening. Thanks for the inspection.

In my opinion, the first fill works so well because it can be used solely to create a dynamic transition or can be involved within the band's dynamics without ever getting in the way.

Hi Stephen! Thanks for the lesson. I love fills. I think I like number 4 or 5 the best cause they just feel really groovy. I'm designing what will be an awesome fill book with my drum instructor. We hope to have it done before the new year. I always love seeing all the different ways you can create a fill.

Great lesson Stephen! You are quite an excellent teacher. I'm a guitar player/teacher who can play drums fairly competently but I've only occasionally taught them which I find quite challenging. I've recently gotten a gig which involves doing a 1hour weekly drum lesson with a 7 year old who seems to have a good sense of rhythm and is a good kid. However his focus wears thin fairly quickly so I'm researching now to get as many teaching tricks in my bag to cope with the second half of that long 60 minute lesson. Of course I appreciate improving my own drumming as well! Cheers!

Oh for sure, a 7 year old is gonna wear out focus wise quick. Something I do quite often with younger players...I put the work part up front and then I save the “fun” stuff for the back half...jamming together or learning a song that they have wanted to learn. Thanks for being such a caring teacher. We need more like you!

@@StephenTaylorDrums Thanks very much Stephen for the personalized feedback. Much appreciated. BTW I've been enjoying experimenting with the pat boon, debby boon and splat boon fills I learned from you. I taught my little guy the pat boon and he cooperated on that. We also made some headway jamming to "We Will Rock You".. I recommended to his mother to decrease the lesson from 60minutes to 30 or 45 minutes if they continue in the fall.. ;)

If it takes you 8 bars to do a Debbie, you should skip the Debbie and find a Candy bar. And thanks for the work you put into these. It really helped me illustrate some things to my son that helped him move a little further away from the rigidity he picked up the last couple years on quads and more towards a nice groove feel that sounds much improved on both counts. He's even had a bit of influence on his section and band mates at his school. It's amazing what a wee bit of shuffle can do to a sound. Thanks again, my friend. Light, abundance, and a long life of perfect fills to you my friend...thanks again.
