Hey everyone, I wanted to make this video to share the 5 dutch foods that I eat almost all the time. It may not be the craziest food but its the most useful and lekker in my opinion! Which one of these is your favorite?!

Kwark is a thick version of yoghurt. It goes through a strainer to thicken, although the taste is a bit more sour than yoghurt :)

Kwark is actually a very fresh cheese, just like ricotta and mascarpone. In Belgium, it is called Plattekaas and in France, it is called fromage fraise/fromage blanc.

When you eat kwark with cinnamon, crushed walnuts, apple, oats and honey it taste like a apple pie ! 🥧

Hahah kriebeltjes, I love it😂 Your Dutch is really improving tho! I remember watching your videos a while back and you had to ask Nick what some words were in Dutch, so so proud! And ps. I loooove worstenbroodjes so a video on how to make them would be so fun!! ❤️

There is an episode of Keuringsdienst van Waarde about kwark. You should watch it, super interesting. And wow 16K already, i remember i started watching you when you still had 2k.... Time flies i guess but you so deserve it❤️

About the asperges, we have the AAA times in Brabant. It stands for Aardbeien (strawberries), Asperges and Ansjovis. It’s from te beginning of spring, till the middle/ end of June! 😉

5:50 - fun fact: I'm from Friesland and "Snelle Jelle" is actually a sarcastic remark for someone slow, sluggish (e.g. like that co-worker that just doesn't hurry up) - it doesn't mean slacking off :) I'm waiting for the energy-bar called "Sterke Jerke", which is a sarcastic remark for someone that is a little bit weakish.

the big dutch food are "stampot", mashed potato with some form of vegetable, usually either endive, kale or onion with carrots. then you serve that with gravy, a big sausage, and small pieces of bacon. or split pea soup. basicly says it asll, but it is soo good, with sausage and veggies and super thick. in fact a good erwtensoep holds the spoon upright if you stick it in, thats how thick it is supposed to be.

Voor de lekkerste ontbijtkoek moet je bij Knol`s koek in Groningen zijn. Ze hadden, hebben? een klein winkeltje vlak naast de Kunstacademie Minerva, en hun notenkoek is de allerlekkerste.

Asperge, the only food where the measure for how much I need per person is in kg, not grams. For me it hovers around 1 to 1.5 kg per person. And the trimmed ends I use to make a soup.

@AitchBee niet echt, asperge voor mij is niet heel vaak. Per seizoen zal het 5 - 6 keer zijn. En maximaal 4 personen, meestal 2. En eieren en ham zijn de hoofdprijs, en een paar krieltjes.

Ow Joey you crack me up every time. Love you're videos en please Nick make worstenbroodjes from scratch, the only ones we get to buy in Friesland are from the supermarket and they are disgusting 🤐 i wanna learn to make them to. Dear Joey keep up the good work, i littery dropped everything to watch you're videos. They're the best in this time of quarantine and maaaaaan you're dutch is really improving! Proud of you!

My parents grow asparagus, so the season depends how you grow them. We grow them without heating, so all natural where it is completely dependent on the weather (in particular night temperatures). Usually, when the weather is good at the time of the year, the season will start around half/end of april, and it will last around 10 weeks. Also, quark is actually very healthy and nutritious and its production process is, I guess you could say, similar to that of yoghurt. It isn't quite thesame as yoghurt though, it's a littlebit more firmer because the network of protein and other solid contents make the structure more firm than that of yoghurt. However, it does have a littlebit of a shear thinning effect, that yoghurt also has. Which means that if you put it under stress (shear) it will become a bit more thin. Now it totally depends on the original composition of the milk and on the added ingredients such as starter culture etc. That might be why not all quarks are thesame in taste or mouthfeel, especially when the fat content changes for example!

I am happy Nick already made the video about worstenbroodjes with you! The word you can use is "afwisselen". Voorbeeld 1; Ik wissel de smeerkaas af met oude kaas. Voorbeeld 2; i have 2 belts. One is brown one is black. Then you can say; ik wissel de bruine riem af met de zwarte riem. I hope this is clear hahah

I agree kwark is pretty yoghurt-y, but thicker and, ehm, idk. Anyway, the main difference between kwark and yoghurt is how it's made! It's not yoghurt at all, instead it's made just like cheese, just without the salt and less of the water is extracted after fermenting the milk. For cheese you would press out as much water as possible and let it ripen for weeks, kwark doesn't ripen and still has plenty of water.

Hi Joey, I just finished my white asperges.. classical way :-) with boiled new potatoes, ham, egg and molten butter or Hollandaise sauce. The 5th time this season. Normally we go to campsites with our caravan and we always look for asperges in april-may. It are the new shoots of the plant in the ground. So only in the spring there are asperges. The best are the ones only a few hours out of the ground. About smelling asperges in your pee... that's a DNA thing, it's a certain Neanderthal piece of your DNA that gives you the ability to smell it. Not everybody is able to smell this in the pee. Thanks for the tip.. ontbijtkoek with peanut butter.

Kwark is just young cheese. The low fat version is quite healthy. Eat it with fresh fruit and muësli (the fruit version Lidl). The food in the Netherlands used to be quite dull ..but being Dutch Indonesian (Indo) my people brought a lot of tasty oriental food to the Netherlands. Please go to the Markthal in Rotterdam or the annual Pasar Malam in Den Haag. There you can find real food ...

Kwark is basically really young cheese. If you would get it in countries like Belgium or Germany it would be young cheese

Old Amsterdam kaas... is ohhh so jummy. My mom eat witte asperges rolled in ham. And yes asperges makes you stink :D. I don't like to eat those. I love ontbijkoek and worstenbroodjes, but I don't eat those weakly. When I eat weakly on bread is cheese, salami, pâte, corned beef, ham and so on

Wist je dat Old Amsterdam eigenlijk helemaal geen echte oude kaas is? De kaas wordt oud gemaakt tijdens het productieproces. Hier heeft de Keuringsdienst Van Waarde ooit een aflevering over gemaakt. Sinds ik dit weet, eet ik eigenlijk geen Old Amsterdam meer, maar ga ik voor oude kaas naar de kaasboer. Kost wat meer, maar beter dat dan genept worden waar je bijstaat.

Kwark is known as fromage blanc in France. It’s the exact same as yogurt except it is curdled with acid like lemon juice etc, while yogurt is curdled with probiotics. Have you tried speculoospasta? I only get a jar at Christmas time because it’s very indulgent but it’s like, insane. Like if graham crackers were spreadable. Got some good recs from this, will try snelle jelle and kwark!

The funny thing is that Indonesian and Surinam are such a big part of Dutch cuisine but they dont get counted for some weird reason.. While if you say UK people think curry 😂

Its in season now, hurry to your mother in law. Also try Dutch mussels from Yrseke when in season cooked in beer. Dutch cherries are also the best tasting in the world. And the Dutch strawberries. take a road trip to the Betuwe and pick them yourself (can be done at a lot of farms) nothing beats that taste.

When I grew up (before I went vegan and realized I can't eat gluten) I ate lots of ontbijtkoek. Not the 'Snell Jelle' tho, just a slice of a 'normal' ontbijtkoek. No idea if Snelle Jelle has more additives tho, but def more packaging ;) I used to put peanutbutter on it as well or cheese.

In het Nederlands kun je de woorden voedsel en eten niet in het meervoud zetten. Je kunt wel zeggen: 'Verschillende soorten voedsel', 'Verschillende soorten eten'. Als je wel een woord in het meervoud wilt gebruiken kun je zeggen 'etenswaren'.

We used to eat kwark as dessert. My mother mixed it with freshly pressed orange juice and served it with hagelslag on top, or even better, grated bitter chocolate. I don't like worstenbroodjes or asperges, but I love ontbijtkoek!

The snelle jelle “ontbijtkoek” is also really REALLY good with some strawberry jam or even some nutella, when you feel like you’re having a cheat meal. The asparagus tho...it’s sooo fine with some butter-cheese sauce 😌👌🏽

Asperges a la "Flamande" (the Flemish way.) It needs a Hollandaise sauce. Season is aprox. April, May. Love it! And I love Purslane, also a spring vegetable.

We have home grown asparagus because my wife has a vegetable garden (volkstuintje) voor het eerst dit jaar. De provincie met de meeste asperges is Limburg, maar ze worden overal gekweekt. I know the worstebroodjes from our regular supermarket Jan Linders, but my favorites are saucijzenbroodjes. These are made from minced veal in puff pastry.

Weer een leuke video, Joey! Mijn moeder komt uit Zwitserland en ik vroeg haar wel eens wat zij destijds (inmiddels zo'n 42 jaar geleden) vond van de Nederlandse keuken, maar ze kan helaas niet zo veel meer herinneren. En nu is ze zo 'ingeburgerd' dat ze heerlijke stamppotten maakt en geen nee zegt tegen een dropje. 😉 Please, Nick: zou jij de worstenbroodjes willen maken? 🤞🏻

I randomly saw your video about Dutch food you eat on a regular basis, great video! You were talking about Old Amsterdam on your sandwich, however Old Amsterdam isn’t actually genuine old cheese. The cheese is made old during the production process. The program “Keuringsdienst Van Waarde” made an episode about this. Look it up if you could. In that program, journalists are doing research on seemingly common things, such as Old Amsterdam and more recently, Hollandse Nieuwe (herring). Very interesting. And if I may, if you are fond of old cheese, go to your local cheese shop and ask for old cheeses. I have one in my fridge right now, it is so old that I can’t cut normal slices from it, because it would break into tiny pieces lol. Also, if you are to try genuine old cheese, try mustard on it. I have mustard with honey from the brand Maille, available at Albert Heijn.

I always feld the kwark to ‘heavy’ so i use the magere yogert with the müsli for most of my brackfasts in a week. So you are right that is very tasty

Hi Joey, good to see you so happy. Your Dutch is realy improving. Kwark is something like a skimmed milk farmers cheese. Because of the low fat content, it gives you that particular mouth-feel (as if you were chewing on velvet). Muesli was developed by Swiss dr. Bircher-Benner around the 1900's. Already at that time he found that affluence promoted the wrong food intake. Too much fat, too much processed food, too little vegetables and fruits. Very interesting that his theory today still makes sense. Snelle Jelle is realy nice, but has a high sugar content.So for you, yes. For me, no-no. Witte asperges, love them! And certainly if they come out of the ground fresh as with your mother in law. Worstenbroodjes, boy so good. But also not very healthy for the weight challenged people. My favorite is de asperege!

Kwark is very very very young cheese! So the beginning stage of making cheese. Cheesecake in Dutch is kwarktaart.

Heey, je Nederlands is al heel goed! Iets om op te letten: na voegwoorden (conjunctions) zoals "omdat" gaat het werkwoord naar het einde van de zin. Bijvoorbeeld: omdat ik het lekker vind :)

Kwark = very young cream cheese (cottage cheese). What you call a cheese-cake in English is in Dutch called a 'kwarktaart'. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwark

Not true. A cheese cake is made with roomkaas, like monchou or a home brand roomkaas. We call that cheese cake. Kwarktaart is kwarktaart and made with kwark. Its a different thing.

@@robertlinke2666 Ja. Het lijkt qua smaak ook niet op kaas en er worden meestal zoete dingen van gemaakt (kwarktaart of vruchten erdoor).

@@Loesters Kwark IS roomkaas like Monchou or Mascarpone. It is not a different thing. Simply Google it. Or look at the wiki link I provided. Or simply use Google translate, also there 'Kwarktaart' is translated to 'Cheese cake'. Why do you think that is?

@@andymill8552 dude. Go to the store. By 1 monchou and also buy 1 kwark. Eat both. Then come right back here and type: Im sorry MLH you were right, roomkaas and kwark are two different kind of thingies. I also googeld it. After my 42 years of being a Dutch mom and making lots of cheesecakes and kwarktaarten, I decided to ask googel about it. First link I got: cheesecakeisgeenkwarktaart.wordpress.com. I agree with that link. Also. Cheese cake is baked and kwarktaart is not (you put of in the fridge to stiffen up). The taste is just so different as well. I dont like kwarktaart as much as cheese cake. So yeah. Im pretty sure I got this.

Definitely broodjes and worstenbroodjes. Kwark is also very lekker. There's a Swedish type of Kwark called Kvärk (if I'm not mistaken) that my trainer recommended to me bc it helps build muscle and is low in fats & sugars. I'm sure Belgium and Germany have Kwark too but German kwark is not quite the same. Also, try baking a Kwarktaart with Nick. It's kind of like the Dutch version of a cheesecake 😊😁 I've been baking a lot & it's so much fun Also gevulde paprika's (stuffed bell pepper). Not sure if that's typically Dutch but it's both very healthy and very yummy. 😁💙

I have my white or green asparagus grilled in beenham or pancetta with creme fraiche and roasted almond slices. Sometimes a runny egg lol. I guess it's less 'Dutch' without the maggi poeder boter insta saus but lol whatever. I am like randy from southpark. The germans are also very obsessed by their spargel and quark
