The Hunting Public is the real deal. Appreciate how much effort, work, and emphasis they place on the importance of hunting public game lands. They're skilled. Much respect for them as hunters since they don't bait or own acres of land where they manage and raise deer. Very glad to see you joining up with them for a public land hunt. It's important for all hunters to get into the public lands. Hopefully you get something hunting the public lands.

I used to hunt all nilly willy like and I would see a deer or two and nothing for several sits. Last year, after reading your books and watching your videos, something really clicked with me. Last year I hunted only the best weather days and only the correct stands and I started to actually see deer doing the deer stuff that people used to tell me about LOL. I am getting a lot of interesting activity on my cameras, when a couple of years ago, I would only get a glimpse of a deer moving through. Low-pressure hunting and good habitat management has changed everything. Thank you Jeff.

I let 3 small bucks walk last year and killed the good one during muzzle load season. I kill a good buck there bout every year. Year before last I let a good 8 walk but I’d limited out on bucks by the time I was hunting a friend a doe. Low and behold all I seen was bucks the last week of season lollllll. That’s the way it goes though.

My season in Minnesota starts September 14th and so excited to get out in the woods. Question is I was scouting a few weeks ago and noticed little-to-no oak trees producing acorns. I'm hunting a river valley surrounded by Ag Fields. Mostly corn some soybeans some wheat. Any idea what the number one food source for mature bucks would be this time of year? I noticed tons of browse on stinging nettle tops in the low-lying areas. Hunting central Minnesota. Thanks!

Hey Jeff, watching your channel religiously! I hunt on a lease in the Piney Woods of east Texas. Roughly have about 100 acres to myself. I've set up a few .25 acre food plots. Pigs are a huge problem here. They will rut up anything i plant. Any tips? Most of our area is pines or hardwoods. Very limited open fields. Id love to get some dominate buck activity. I catch a few 140-160" on cam each year but they elude me during my day hunts. Would love to hear some pointers.

We have 160 acres (25 AG in the middle) surrounded by over 1000 acres of nature preserve and private land no hunting allowed. Many of the bucks don't come in until after sundown- very frustrating. I just try to set up by the entry points and hope they arrive early which does occasionally happen
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Great, diverse and unpressured food plots can change all of that in just 1 season Harold. Easy to get those bucks to hit before dark every single day, and to compact the overall movement greatly. Bucks do not want to move s 1/2 mile every day to their afternoon food source. The only bad thing is that the ag is bad for creating that high powered movement. Timber cuttings for layered bedding and daily deer movement would help too. It can be done in less than a year ☺️ Hope the tips on the channel help you put it all together.

So, I’m a bit confused. Bucks move 10x more in the mornings when compared to the evenings but evenings have a higher priority... Theoretically, let’s say the morning of October 5th experiences a 15* drop in temp with a 10mph drop in the wind; wouldn’t it be a good idea to sit that morning if I’m 80 yards from their bedroom with ag 300 yards behind me, or are those bucks still eating the shrub and briars in their bedroom?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Bucks move a lot more in the morning, during the rut...that's it. So a huge priority on evening hunting outside of the rut or opening day of gun season, because you are likely to spook deer outside if that timeframe. So many feel they have to go hunt during the morning on opening day or during the early season...destroying the high value, many times higher evening sit. The key to hunting the morning during the early season is getting away with it.
@markortolani13665 жыл бұрын
Whitetail Habitat Solutions Whitetail Habitat Solutions thank you for the reply, seriously, it is amazing that you spend the time relying to so many people on your videos. I have some good deer on the small parcel I hunt and I’d rather not blow it out before I get a chance to hunt them... Jeff, I live in Oklahoma where early season (Oct) temps are averaging about 75 degrees in evening whereas the morning are more like 50-55. Do you think I should use the same strategy of favoring evening hunts because the deer acclimate to the temps in their region or do you think I should take advantage of the cooler morning temps in early season. The thing I dislike about early season evening hunts is that it is often high 70s or low 80s the first 2 weeks of October for an evening sit. You don't have much time to find a downed deer and get it in the cooler!
@d65-m1x5 жыл бұрын

Great video as usual jeff. What type of foodplot do you suggest jeff for a semi shaded timber where a decent amount of sun hits the ground due to there being a thin canopy of trees
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Tom...thank you very much! Boy that's a tough one. Depends on soil, planting resources, size of plot, region, soil, etc. BUT, for starters clover is semi shade tolerant but very low browse resistance...in particular in shaded areas. For many north 1/2 of the country states layering rye would be a best options often. 100#s late August depending on your location...and then another 100#s per acre broadcast right on top, 3 weeks and 6 weeks after the initial planting. Very browse resistant method where you are building a heavy sod base of forage and filling the growing space horizontally. Winter rye (rye grain) is about as shade tolerant, pH tolerant, low fertility and hardy seed variety that you can plant.

What do you consider to windy and most likely not a productive day to hunt?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Really it's all relative. I actually like high NW cold front winds because I hunt the Lee sides of ridges that are quiet and seem to hold a large % of the deer herd. Also, to me a 50mph drop to 30mph is just about as valuable as a 30mph to 10mph drop. So total wind to me isn't as valuable as wind speed change...also if you can get out of the wind you may find a pile of deer.

I don't know where they go in about 3 weeks all im going to get on my cameras is does and little bucks. How do I go about looking for their sign etc? I've always been scared to move around outside of to/from my stand locations come hunting season. Next, as to your point to the weather. That has always been my #1 rule. But watching When that temperature swing starts to take effect and wind speeds etc.. Normally it starts with a increase in North type wind and the temp will start to fall... Precip more of a east wind. How do you go about judging your sit as to when that swing starts to take affect? Middle of the day start you hit the stand that evening and what type of hill facing you hunting? How about an after dark start and the next day is really the temp swing for you and the deer woods... What is that afternoon chance day off right before its coming through and the next afternoon after it came through? I'm not a morning hunter with a compound in my hand. I hate walking in the dark and can't see them while they see me and run the other way.

Thanks a Eric and you are welcome! I find morning hunting is better anywhere during the rut...those are the most important stand locations. BUT....only during the rut...opening day of gun season. There are select other times for morning but you never want to burn out high value daylight evening movements for a morning hunt risk, outside of the rut. Some times I only hunt mornings during the rut. Morning stands are rarely good evening stands.

Hey Jeff. Great stuff, glad I found your channel this summer. You mentioned avoiding bedding areas with short travel routes from food in the morning. Could you give some distances for short vs long travel route? I have a public spot with a creek and grassy lowland I want to access by water early and set up on the tree line on the back side from where the ag field is ( ag on higher elevation). The woods in between the ag and the grassy creek bottom is between 100-200yds.

Hi Joel thanks a lot for watching and finding the channel! 100-200 yards isn't too bad at all. The true test this, is that you can get into and out of a movement without spooking the movement...especially at the bedding area or food source. Not an exact distance...more can you get in and out without spooking deer.

@davekamalas25375 жыл бұрын
Good luck with that people are everywhere they will walk rite by your stand and spook all the deer out of the area.

one thing for sure won't be long now it's right around the corner. IN the past day and a half I've seen two bucks one has completely shed off all his velvet and the other one still had the bloody mess hanging off of his rack.

I think when you hunt with a professional Hunter or a old timer you get a value experience know how go's a long way I hunt with amateurs and they never takeout time to scout out where we hunt at, 1 of my friend just setup his blind through out bait and a camera and waits, Our other friend doesn't know jack sht I keep telling him the basic he refuses to learn especially with a firearm lead alone with a crossbow. And third it's me where I like to scout the area , Which I look for scrapes rubs tracks lanes broken branches vegetation wind direction and cover and I don't have any wise people around me but I have been reading a lot of the expert notes yet to get the opportunity to kill my first buck so I keep going out to public land hoping a praying that I get lucky this Season . Good luck Guy's. In this Season of Bow & Rifle Season & be Safe.

Not gonna lie,, i may be obsessed with youre vids sir. Upstate ny wish we could grow some 130+ deer but chances are slim dont get me wrong they are here and there but just wish hunters would kill more does and pass on the small guys. Our ratio is roughly 2 bucks to 8-10 does and i know this from watching deer yr round studying them and learning.we need to harvest way more mature does!! Need a better balanced herd...

Do you know of a good grunt call for mule deer in Utah? Or will any grunt call work?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Dang I wish I could help you out...that is way out of my realm of experience. Completely not sure. I only hunt whitetail 😁 Extremely whitetail focused!
@FaTalErrQr5 жыл бұрын
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I know. I would hope that it would all be the same principles because they are in the same family, however no matter how hard I try, I can't find a mule deer grunt call. Sad day.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
@@FaTalErrQr ha, I would think they are all the same. Honestly, I wouldn't think there is anything different? I know they make some mule deer specific calls but I wonder how much that is just plain ole marketing!?

what weather app/website are you using??????
@rickparshall5 жыл бұрын
He mostly uses weather underground..
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick...I also use AccuWeather a LOT for all of my hourly forecasts...wind speed, wind change, wind direction. For many, many years. I use Weather Underground for historical trends, graph forecasts for viewers and readers. But, I heavily rely on AccuWeather for the day to day forecasts that I base my personal hunting decisions on.

What size sd cards do you ise for taking video?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97515 жыл бұрын
I use 32GB cards in my trail cameras...rarely use more than a 1/4 of that. I believe that allows for about 900, 20 second video clips combined with 900 single 12mp pics.

There’s certain acorns deer will eat. They don’t eat under every oak that has acorns on them. Here in Tn anyways. There a long ridge it has a road goin down it is the bad thang but it’s full of big chestnut oaks. I’d say they’re dropping now up there. I’ve got a stand up there or had one anyways.
