In fact, there are many different ways to get rid of the bedbug. These insects are really sensitive to various insecticides, can't hold temperature drops, and they have no specific or supernatural powers or features.
Nevertheless, there are several most popular and efficient methods, which can be used by virtually any person at home in order to get rid of the bedbugs.
Let's look at the first and the most popular way to get rid of the bedbugs using various sprays and insecticides. This way has a lot of advantages, and allows eliminating all the bedbugs incredibly fast (in just a couple of hours) irrespectively to the size of their population and the number of their hideaways. Furthermore, this ways allows killing not only the bedbugs, but all other insects, such as ants, cockroaches, fleas and moths.
The main disadvantage of this method is its labor intensity. In addition, the majority of aerosols and sprays brings bad smell, while odorless sprays are incredibly expensive.
Professional insect exterminators are frequently using so-called cold fog that contains particles of the smaller size leading to more efficient distribution and penetration of the spray to the hidden places where bedbugs live. However, machines that create such fog are more than expensive. Sometimes even professional exterminators are using special powerful spraying devices, which are efficient enough to get rid of the bedbugs and provide qualitative services.
Another way also involves poisoning of the bedbugs, but with special insect powders. There are many different powders in the market: pyrethrum, malathion, Clean Home and many others.
However, such powders are less efficient against bedbugs than sprays. The level of efficiency is decreased, because such powder can kill the bedbugs only after direct contact, i.e. when a bedbug is running over the powder. It turns out that you won't be able to get rid of bedbugs if they don't have direct contact with the insect powder.
The third way is to freeze the room or apartment out. This way is great, because it's almost totally safe for the human, yet incredibly efficient. However, it has a significant disadvantage.
Freezing-out is pretty hard to carry out in places for living equipped with various communal systems. The thing is one has to keep temperature of around -20°С (or lower) for not less than 24 hours. It's obvious that keeping such temperature in an apartment with utility systems will lead to destruction of water pipes and heating radiators.
As a result, freezing-out can be used for various additional, service or technical premises, i.e. barns, hen houses, basements or service houses. Furthermore, you can use this method for your furniture or separate objects. For example, you can take your couch, closet, mattress, bed, clothes or toys outside and keep them out for a period of time. All the bedbugs will die, and you will be able to return your belongings to the apartment or home.
There's a totally opposite way to get rid of the bedbugs by using high temperatures. It's well known that mature bedbugs and nymphs die at temperature of +45°С in not more than 45 minutes, while temperature of 52° will kill them in just 10-15 minutes. In other words, if you take a powerful heating fan and keep the temperature in your home at the level of 55-60° and keep it for a couple of hours, you will simply kill each and every bedbug there.
However, such heating fans are incredibly expensive, thus their usage is not financially efficient.
Usually people are using steam generation units (even the simplest models for home usage). This method is really old.
It's worth noting that if you use steam to kill a bedbug or its home, all the insects will die from high temperatures. However, keeping in mind that bedbugs live in well hidden places, which can't be easily reached with steam, such steam generator units can be used only to get rid of the bedbugs living in open spaces.
There's another interesting way that involves fly strips. The idea is to move your sleeping space from your bed to the floor (using air mattress), surrounding their new sleeping space with fly strips, creating a sticky border all around their new bed.
Bedbugs will try to find people using the smell of the carbon dioxide exhaled by the human. Keeping in mind that people will sleep on the mattress, bedbugs will try to reach it, getting stuck on the fly strips.
