Yes, he winds up hopping from the world of FFI to the world of Dissidia with his adopted son and a copy of his late wife created from crystal matter. After making a pact with the dragon Shinryu, the 3 become deities.

FINAL FANTASY VIII IN A NUTSHELL (SPOILERS) Rinoa: "Oh no, Squally! I inherited phenomenal sorceress powers that will almost certainly corrupt my mind and body and turn me slowly into an evil being of destruction!" Squall: "Don't worry Rinoa, I will still be your knight and defend you, no matter what happens. Here, have my ring. It is a GF called Griever, and looks like a cool lion." Rinoa: "SWEET! I will treasure it always. Hey, let's set up a special meeting place where we will reunite if anything goes wrong, okay? It can be this beautiful field of flowers!" --- 30 HOURS LATER --- Ultimecia: "Mwa ha ha! I am an evil being of destruction with phenomenal sorceress powers! I came from the future, where everything is in ruins, but am visiting the present through time compression! And it just so happens that my castle is anchored at a certain "meeting place" that used to be a field of flowers, for NO REASON AT ALL." Squall: "Uh, you seem a bit familiar somehow..." Rinoa: "She seems just awful, I hope I don't wind up like her some day. Promise me you will protect me FOREVER, Squally!" Squall: "Whatever." Ultimecia: "Silence!! Now I will summon by best and most favourite GF, Griever! Sorceress magic and the effects of GFs have corrupted my memory so that I don't really remember where I got this GF from, but for some reason I feel connected to it. Plus, it looks like a cool lion!" Squall: "Maybe I'm a lion." Ultimecia: "Shut up, you!" Rinoa: "Wait, are you... me... from the future??" Square Enix: "NO, THAT IS A MADE-UP FAN THEORY THAT WE HAVE EXPLICITLY DENIED!!! IT IS NOT THE OFFICIAL STORY. RINOA HAS WHITE WINGS, ULTIMECIA HAS BLACK WINGS, THAT PROVES THEY ARE DIFFERENT!! IN FACT ULTIMECIA IS NOBODY IMPORTANT AND NOTHING IN THIS GAME MEANS ANYTHING. PLEASE PRE-ORDER FFXV, COMING SOON IN 2017."

It's funny, but I felt the FFXIII "fan theory" while playing. I didn't even consider it a fan theory. I thought they were going for that feeling and many players just didn't enjoy it. But then, I enjoyed FFXIII, so I'm probably crazy.
@SwobyJ
@SwobyJ 8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Warhurst I didn't think it at the time, but years later and before watching this video. Fighting Fate was core theme. The sequels show their own forms of this as well, with the paradox and countdown stuff, both also about fate. The FFXIII world was all about the will to power. Other FF games were too, but these ones were the most. FFX had a pretty close version of this too, except it was the 'spira(l) of death' (more about death than fate) and its own inevitability, with FFX-2 being the positive acceptance of the eventual end but also the decision to enjoy life until then. So FFX had a linearity as well, while X-2 let us enjoy the hell out of Spira.

+MCCiabattaGrande because it says "The age of crystal has come to an end" or something extremely close along those lines, and the setting (from what I've seen so far) looks very close, if not exactly like the "new world" created at the end. Secondly, I do believe they make references to Noel Kreiss and Paddra-Tsu Yeul, as well as Lightning Farron
@randomwannab

They're supposed to be on the same timeline, since ff15 was previously "versus 13" and used the same crystal system as ff13. Type 0 and Final Fantasy Agito were also in this timeline. It's called "Fabula Nova Crystallis" if you guys were curious.

this is where Square confused people. the 13 trilogy, type-0. agito and ff15 are set in deferent time lines and different worlds but share similar mythos to one another thats why they are all part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. For example the 13 games take place primerally on pulse exceptions being the few times they are on cocoon and in valhalla and that LR's world is called Fabula nova crystallis after the chaos mereged with pulse.Agito is a prequel to type-0 and those games take place in the world of Orience and the FF15 world has been confirmed as Eos. All the games mentioned tho have slight variations of the same mythos for example Etro the goddess of death is in the 13 trilogy and is mentioned in a really old 15 trailer back when it was versus 13 and she is depicted as the godess of death their as well. Fal'cie and L'cie are in the 13 games and the agito/type-0 games. I remember Fal'cie and l'cie being mentioned back when 15 was again versus 13 but since the switch I have heard nothing about them so maybe they caned the idea after the back lash of people not understanding the difference between a fal'cie and l'cie in 13. Another variation is that in 13 a l'cie is given a focus and if they dont complete it they turn to a cieth and if they do complete it they turn to crystal well in the agito/type-0 games the L'cie chosen by each cities crystal do not turn cieth if they take too long and neither do they turn to crystal, so they seem to have a regular lifespan but they just have exceptional magical powers and are charged with guarding whatever cities crystal turned them into l'cie So the games are in different worlds but they have slight variations of the same mythos.

FFX does certainly seem like a prequel to FF7 in some ways. The world map looks similar. It's missing the majority of the western continent, but maybe the Spira...uns... Spirians... Spirans... er, Spirons. Yeah. Maybe the Spirons never ventured that far west to map the continent due to imminent attack from Sin if they went too far out to Sea? Also, materia is said to preserve the memories and magic of the Ancients. Well, there are spheres in FFX, which come in all forms but most importantly are used to give characters stats and abilities on the Sphere Grid. It's also known that the Ancients didn't need materia itself to be equipped to use magic, and all characters can access magic abilities on the Sphere Grid. It's also fun to think of Sin being a Weapon.

balbanes1 I think that most of the criticism XII gets comes from a weird narrative choice. In that game you do not control the protagonist, but a witness of the events of the story (Vaan). That in itself is contrary to JRPGs in general, but I agree is not a bad game, specially coming from "Ivalice Alliance" :D
@Draidis
@Draidis 9 жыл бұрын
+balbanes1 You're right. Square DID over react to fan criticism... they always do. Fans liked how characters looked in FFVII but thought they were WAAAAY too skinny in FFVIII..... So they make tiny dwarf characters with mega heads in FFIX and shout "THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED!" ...... Really not..... I have many many more examples but it's typical. They can't handle criticism.

In FF8 There's evidence in every disc that shows its not imagination and it's all real, people say norg isn't real and just a random thing in the garden but there's info on norg existing in disc 1, people say moombas were just random beings that were a product of the dream, but they existed in lagunas time which is obviously before squall was even born. they show characters using magic outside of battle which most final fantasies don't do, so it's easily possible that squall was healed in order for ultimecia to get the info she wanted on what the purpose of SeeD's are, which of course is to kill sorceress', but she comes from a time where SeeD doesn't exist, so it would make sense for her to keep squall alive to find out why they attacked her and what SeeD is

Isai Maldonado I take Dissidia as proof that the Squall is dead theory is fake. Even if the story of that game is not canon, it acknowledges that characters exist in their worlds. So for Ultimecia to be chosen she must have been real. And she clearly knows Squall in game which means that they were taken from their worlds mid conflict.

It kinda depends how you define "linear" in a video game. I think the Issue with XIII is not that is linear as in you have mission/route A then B then C but rather that the world appears a lot like a bunch of corridors after another. It's not about the questline but it's visually linear. I just played FFX again and apart from a few side quest it's just one long predetermined road. However, it doesn't feel like it because some areas branch out a lot more. TL;DR I agree with you. The issue with FFXIII is that it *looks* more like a narrow corridor you walk along.

+XenoBlade Fan2011 Bartz is a Mimic in Dissidia. His entire moveset is comprised of the other the heroes movesets but he does add his own flair to them. His mimicry of his allies is the only reason he can wield their signature weapons in Dissidia. So technically speaking, the ones he uses are just mimicked replicas. Only true weapon he has is his own Brave Blade.

I think it may well be; the corridor environments were claustral but there's quite a bit of detail in most of them - and presentation was visually crisp, guided. The framerate would've probably been all over the place if they attempted even a slither of GTA 5 levels of open-world (a weird comparison but visually, it's less pristine as a result; still great visually - but it has 4 years of software technology on XIII). Now we're getting closer to XV, there's finally the resources to have both crisp, detailed JRPG visuals and large areas. Final Fantasy loves visual detail, going right back to the old static artwork backgrounds in VII-IX and intermittently in X. It'll be great to finally see that sort of presentation in larger, real-time environments.

+Illusioterapia I've always supported this theory, even though Square has said it's not true. For people playing for the first time, or not paying attention, they wouldn't realize Ultimecia is there from the beginning. So her showing up at the end is like 'who the f is this?'. It's a backstory that I support because it makes her more interesting.
@zackstaal5965

+Illusioterapia i like that better than the squall is dead from disc 2 on. the main reasons for the theory can be disputed depending on how much you dig into say the garden computers and npc conversations. the world of 8 is one of my favorites and in there is no evidence that supports it. your theory however can be very solid.

XIII wasn't any more linear than any other FF title, it just did away with the hypocrisy of it. Other FF titles are just as linear, they just give you the illusion that they are not. XIII included some of the gameplay into the story-telling, which was brilliant. After all, you're not gonna stop for sidequests if you are on the run, and the party in FFXIII have everyone down their throats.
@blazenj14

+keffypoo thank goodness someone else sees that. I think that in the same way like FFX is literally a one way track until the final dungeon.
@nanatheneko
@nanatheneko 8 жыл бұрын
+keffypoo I agreed to an extent. the story of all the FF's is just as linear requiring you to go to specific points to advance the story, but many of them (the older titles at least) also have other places you can visit or explore without just going to the plot places. sure sometimes you'd end up in an area with monsters 30 levels too high but thats the point of exploration. FF13 made a literal hallway, you couldnt really deviate at all and there was very little to explore untill you've basically played a solid 15-20 hours
@keffypoo
@keffypoo 8 жыл бұрын
Which is one of the reasons I liked FFXIII so much. I'm not utterly convinced by the fact that older titles had more freedom. FFI~III had nothing to do apart from the story (not counting remakes). FFIV~VI had very little exploration until rather late in the game. FFVII Midgar and even after leaving the city, you could barely explore anything until you had the buggy. FFVIII did not leave you explore until you got the Balamb Garden as a vehicle, that's also rather late. I'm not even sure FFIX had any exploration until the final disc. Exploring in an old JRPG always went like: -> oops, can't go there, monsters too strong. -> oops, can't go there, it requires a spell/skill/key item I do not yet possess. -> oops, can't go there without the right vehicle/mount. -> well, I may as well continue the story. In the end, you had explored nothing, you had only been (mis)led to think you had any kind of freedom.

I really liked the Final Fantasy XIII fan theory. It makes the corridor game make sense. Although, Square Enix has confirmed that content was removed from the game because of the X-Box 360 version. And, that the game was originally the same size as Metal Gear Solid 4 in game data and would of originally required 21 disks for the 360 version to fit all of the content into it. But, M$ paid them a whopping $50 million for the game and they had to make the content cuts happen and ultimately destroyed what should have been a great game. And, the amount of content cut from the game to make the 360 version work was more than enough to make a whole new Final Fantasy game. In short, X-Box killed Final Fantasy in the previous generation of consoles, not Square-Enix.

FFX does the "FF13 linearity as character" thing a ton better: The Sphere Grid starts off as linear progression, but opens up as the plot starts to go off the rails. It unfolds slightly after Sinspawn Gui and breaks open a bit more by Macalania, By the time Yunalesca is defeated, there is no going back now; the world and sphere grid completely open up once the party members reject their roles and decide to find a better solution. FF13 wishes it was FFX.

I loved the lore behind Dissidia though. The longer the characters stayed in that mashed-up universe beyond FF5's Void, and also the more times they died & respawned, the more memories they lost, so in the end they became shadows of themselves. It was much like FF8 (or Doctor Who lol) that if you get stuck in a time loop you eventually forget your own name. Also the plot twist in the end was **SPOILER** Dissidia was actually a sequel to FF1 all along... oooooh. So you could say that Dissidia doesn't prove the theory that all the FFs are from the same world or even the same universe, just that the Void from FF5 could be used as a gateway between multiple universes.

You forgot about a huge FFVIII theory that I read about. Rinoa is actually Ultimecia and Squall is her guardian force. When Squall gives his ring to Rinoa you get to name the ring. The default name is Griever which also co-incides with the name of the guardian force that Ultimecia junctions to during the final boss fight. Now the theory goes that due to the Guardian Forces effect on a persons psyche (I.e. over time the persons begins to loose their memories) that at some point Squall sacrifices himself and becomes Griever. As a result Rinoa, as a sorceress becomes corrupted and loses her memories. She is not quite sure what she is searching for and learns that time can be compressed. Basically this allows for two different versions of Squall and Rinoa, one of which is a lost sorceress searching for her identity and the time compression allows for an opportunity for all of that to be undone as Squall and Rinoa ultimately destroy Griever and Ultimecia and through their memories make it back to their own time. So it is highly possible that some version of the time line, they destroy themselves and get lost becoming a higher evil in the world which gives birth to the sorceress and SEEd is created to fight that evil. Basically its possible that there are several time threads where SEEd does not exist and Squall and Rinoa fail to escape the time compression and eventually a thread exists where SEEd is born giving Squall and Rinoa, albeit unknowingly, a chance to escape and create a point in time where the evil of the Sorceress is destroyed and a new time line is created where they no longer need the GF and hence live out the rest of their days as lovers.

Ff8 wasn't random at all. Cid knew who they were and what he was doing. A young person (Rinoa) being fickle isn't a leap for me. And Seifia had issues, was manipulated with his own delusional dream. The Acid trip is time decompression and the characters trying to focus on getting home. Ff7. Ruffas has his own agenda, part of that agenda is staying alive. (Sephiroth wants to kill everyone.) He didn't change in the movie, he wanted to rebuild Shinra and get his power back.

The final fantasy 13 theory is true and theres alot more to it then what you said in the video. Other important factors are that grand pulse represents a placed where the characters are free from their fate as L'cie so you now get the choice todo sidequests, its one of the best mechanics as metaphor ever done in the AAA game space. The theory is also supported by the battle system where you can chose auto battle (which the symbolic equivalent of accepting your fate). There is also the paradigm system which represents different ways you can choose to live your life and concur adversities. This further compounds in the stagger system which represents stress in everyday life.

Tidus in FFX is still asleep in the eternal faith that birthed Sin. He is retelling his story endlessly just as the story of Zanarkands destruction had been retold. The trapped and tortured souls of the void still linger there alongside him and the hidden boss Penance killing them is symbolic of their release into the void. In the sequel to FFX, FFX-2, Yuna can call out to him and he finally hears her call. He makes his way through the farplane before emerging from the ocean, indicating that he was taken there by the eternal faith just as sin had in the first game. That ancient evil power capable of destroying all of Spira is still right beneath the surface, waiting for it's summoner to call upon it.

Shinryu devoured his world and left him alive and Cod created everything. All the gods and from them all the multiverse. Well by that logic why laguna? Why not Rydia? I'm sure with this new game we'll get a boat load of dlc characters. And actually it's not really fluff lol. It's the only thing that's ever confirmed that there was a timeline before the multiverse. There was an arch demon before Chaos, and a newly born God created Cosmos. Dissidia plays out so that Shinryu may devour the "time replicas". Like how most time travel stories end with the main character killing themselves off, this ends with them being eaten.. They have no memories of their past lives for the most part. The villains have an upper hand because chaos spills the beans ever go around. It's doudecim 12 because it's the 12th time this has happend (13 because they count 00 as one so 12= 13)

The whole multiverse was created so that Shinryu could be fed. So he could be kept at bay. He sets up shop at every dimension he finds, devours everything and then sleeps, then leaves. Cid built a kitchen around Shinryu essentially so that he'd have meals every time he woke up, and entertainment. Cid felt this was good because it would save others from his fate but even though he made an existence just for this purpose, it's purpose began to wear in him. Sure the dimensions weren't being devoured, just the lives of heroes or villains that lose and all the energy that either cosmos or chaos poured into them.

In FFXIII, you can never return to any area from chapters before chapter 11 once you have passed them. Also, unlike FFX, FFXIII has no real NPCs to talk to (Cie'th Stones don't count) or towns to visit, meaning that there are no side stories to explore.

+Adrian Jacobsen nice theory, but there are two reasons that can't be: - FF XV has the fabula nova crystallis as basic lore, the new world isn't part of that. (though it's possible to come up with explanations to work around this) - the world seen at the end of Lightning Returns is actually our world. when they show the new world, you can clearly recognize africa and lightning describes the world as the world you were born in, talking to the player directly. +ekulerudamuru that might actually be the reason for the naming "versus XIII", though i think the change happened more due to the huge overbudgeting of the project so they had to turn it into a standalone game.

Leng Moua Well they still kept the comments from people who were arguing with me; you might be able to figure out some of it from there. But basically, I dealt with each and every statement made in the article, and showed how it wasn't evidence for the theory. For example, they say that Squall's line about how things don't always happen the way you want them to is *contrary* to the game's theme of fate, when it is in fact *synonymous* with it. Fate quite literally means some things are meant to happen whether you like it or not. They also go on and on about how the latter discs are more "fantastical" or "dreamlike" than the first disc. Talking moombas, oh my! Meanwhile, we just got through meeting a talking mummified ghost, a talking shadow, and a talking monkey on Disc 1! There's a lot more, but you get the idea.

I believe that all Final Fantasies are in the same world which has powers beyond imagination (magic, summoning, etc) and even time itself (FFI, FFIV, FFVIII, FFX). This has attracted several alien species to the planet (FFIII, FFIV, FFVII, FFIX), which have perverted the power of the planet through crystals (almost all FFs). The planet is sometimes too powerful for the aliens, though, so they will set up artificial moons or parallel worlds etc to gather its power (FFIII, FFIV, FFV, FFIX, FFXIII). However, the planet's powers are unstable, and the native sentient species has become corrupted with the new found crystals, so many times the world is destroyed through malicious actions (FFIV (giant robot), FFV (worlds split and recollided), FFVI (apocalypse), FFVII (Weapons), FFIX (Terra/Gaia fusion), FFX (Sin), FFXIII (Interplanetary War)). Each time the world is destroyed, its land masses are severely changed and the planet's power becomes out of balance. The aliens nor native sentient species are able to harnass the planet's power, so it is a constant struggle for those who wish to selfishly use the planet and those who wish to keep the powers out of the hands of the corrupted.

They hadn't planned that far, in fact they didn't plan on anything at all past the first Final Fantasy game. The whole reason the game was called "Final Fantasy" is because it was suppose to be Square Soft's final game. Back before FFI came out the company was failing so they decided to do one last game that put in some of the crazier ideas the developers had and didn't have anywhere else to put. Turns out the game was wildly successful and saved the company so they kept making more. Eventually resulting in what most people would call one of the best RPG's ever made FFVII, or FFVIII, depending usually on which ever you played first, at least in my interactions that's how it usually goes. I would venture to guess after the first one was as successful as it was and they decided to make the second one, they wanted to try new things, and as they made more they decided to set certain laws in place for all the worlds to follow. That's mostly just a guess though.

So, I actually thought to this day that number 5 and 3 were made by Square exactly like that. On my first playthrough of FF8 I knew that Squall is dead since I saw the ending. I mean, even for Final Fantasy, that is some weird shit right there. Same goes for FF13, once the Protagonists escape Barthendulus' control and you arrive at Grand Pulse, you really feel the freedom of it as opposed to chasing down linear paths to get the next cutscene like on Grand Pulse. And guess what, as soon as you get back to Cocoon, the hallways come back. However, I always tried to explain that with the antagonist Barthendulus who basically works as a puppeteer for most of the characters in the game and thus sending his L'Cie down one road they can't escape from. But of course technical limitations are also a good reason :P

+CobaltMK Personally I thought it was quite apparent they had set of to do quite the experimentation with FF around XIII and VS XIII. The tech demos, various interviews around it made it seem like they really wanted to try some different things. There was a press interview where they said how they wanted to better display and portray the emotions the characters were experiencing, hence they churned out XIII pretty swiftly with the basic visual fidelity they wanted. Then at this point tinkered with VS now XV and Agnis keeps coming back. Plus at the time the PS3 was still early alien tech so mash that with an odd developer who wants to tinker with their baby

Ive always supported the Squall is Dead theory. The way things just start getting excessively more crazy as the game goes on after disc 1, as well as the mentioned lack of consistencies and weird things showing up. The way everybody stops questioning Seifer and just marks him as a villain, as well as Rinoa's lack of emotion regarding him later when she thought she loved him, then her sudden interest for Squall. The mind trip of an ending it has, where he tries to recall Rinoa's face over and over again as it seems his memories are almost all but gone, leading to that screenshot of Squall with the void where his face should be as an indication that hes lost his final memories, and begins to wander aimlessly in the black abyss, another possible purgatory reference, until finding the feather and going to heaven where he can be with the others.

Funny enough after watching this video, The no.1 Theory is very close to my Theory on final fantasy which unfortunately I do not have sufficient evidence to prove but the concept is cool. My theory is that Final fantasy is all based on a single planet called Gaia, that is often called something else depending on the generation.Also I believe that the original gods - being Cosmos and Chaos often have different names depending on the game. And due to the fact that in every Final Fantasy, the heroes must save the world from ultimate destruction, I think that what happens in every story is that the crystals wipe mankind's memories of these events, to start over fresh again like in Final Fantasy type-0. Now I can't exactly pin down which game was the starting point. But I do think that the games give strength to my theory, like Final Fantasy 13-2 is the height of technological advances where they are dealing with Time paradoxes and time travel. What if all the games had started out peaceful with no monsters but due to the Time rifts and travel that Noel and Serah used, They tipped the balance and unintentionally created the situations that would change normal people into the Famous Antagonists we know today. My Theory is highly convoluted but fuck it, I had to throw it up there.

Thinking about it now, I'll take FFX because from reading some comment it seems to be generating a lot of hatred. FFX has the Farplane which is the equivalent to Limbo, the souls of the dead come here when a ritual is performed but when the ritual is not performed, the souls become tainted and transform into monsters. What if the souls of farplane get resurrected as the souls of the next generation that follows after them.

As an additional bit of evidence for the worlds of Final Fantasy being linked, let's just look at the Highwind lineage. Final Fantasy II (JP): Ricard Highwind - The first in what may be a long line of Dragoons. Final Fantasy IV: Kain Highwind - The next elite Dragoon that stars in one of the games, may be many generations removed from Ricard Final Fantasy VII: Cid Highwind - Though he lacks the Dragoon title, given that the kingdoms have given way for the super-city Midgar, several aspects of the Dragoon class are obvious. Final Fantasy XIII: Oerba Yun Fang (possible translation: Fang from Oerba) - With the ATB skill 'Highwind' and given the fact that she, like Vanille, is originally from Gran Pulse, with multiple ruined cities that you can go to, it is entirely possible that she is the last surviving member of the Highwind lineage. I do realize that this is just a slightly stronger connection between the games than the ever-present Cid, but I find it to be somewhat thought-provoking.

The Final Fantasy VII - X/X-2 connection is actually confirmed in the ultimnia of final fantasy, but they are separate planets, they end up crashing on the new one of VII when they can't perfectly tap into the farplane, so they go to find another planet that can support life like theres. Also as a side now, I don't hate 13, but X has the exact same corridor's for a long time with that same theme of inevitability towards a single end. Yet no one hates on X for it for two reasons, X doesn't have the corridors literally floating in nothingness sometimes, there well hidden in mountains and other types of landscapes so it looks less like a hallway and more as a path. Also there are actual towns in X, unlike 13. 13-2 on the other hand does that all right, makes the combat quicker, adds time travel, and a similar message without trying to shove hallways at us... So yeah, if that all was intentional, I'd say that makes 13 worse rather than better and drags X down with it.

X and XIII has nothing in commond, even though FFX is a bit liner they did it in a way more open way, also its not as dark and except some part of the game you cna go back and visit places and do things. while FFXIII doesn't give you this option, you see places one time and never again, except "that part" in the game which is close to the end... I heard of a FF fan theory that I’m pretty inclined to believe maybe true.. FF 8 and 13 are connected. The theory is that the bridge in FF 8 (the bridge in Fisherman’s Horizon) is the same bridge that’s located on Oerba in FF 13 (the ancient city on Gran Pulse that Fang and Vanille are originally from) the fact that Squall and Lightning are the only two FF main characters who wield/use gun blades is another indication that the theory maybe true. True or not, it’s an interesting concept to speculate and it wouldn’t be surprising if it was all intentionally done for this specific reason, to have fans speculate and to create an intrigue for the franchise.

To support the multiverse theory: Gilgamesh in FF14 actually mentioned that he has been to "many worlds, meeting many heroes", and when Lightning accidentally landed on Eorzea in FF14, she said she felt the presence of a God toying with her. Even Shantotto in FF11 once mentioned in FF14 that there a greater power exists and toys with them. (And Shantotto is known as one of the most powerful mages already)

Great vid. Though mfw VIII's story is considered "weirder" than VII. FFVII, which had super-soldier powers infused by alien DNA, which rewrote characters' memories, and had critical flashbacks with false information (to set the stage for an epic reveal) to the point that Cloud and the player both thought he was a failed Sephy clone. Throw in the Cloud's psyche acid trip sequence, and I'll be darned to think VIII's time distortion flashbacks and memories fading from summon spirit use to cause all the main characters to forget their shared past is any weirder. But, that's just me.

You know, the theory about XIII being linear because it helps understand the motive behind characters only restricted to moving forward holds, in my opinion. Square has a history of conforming something story related that makes it seems reasonable, but not understandable. I've heard comments regarding Chrono Cross that the story is meant to be its own and the connection of one character in the game doesn't go back to the original(Guile-Magus-Magil line), while various theories, pointing at the same thing that Cross and Trigger are connected through some complicated events, and that Trigger showed cutscenes that can be linked to Cross in its re-release. And I mean, just think about it, Limitations on PS3? Really? They made a game as huge as XII on PS2! And XV was essentially a PS3 game at the start, so this limitation deal doesn't even makes sense. If though, however, the fan theory of XIII holds, it does make the game depressing in terms of its story(apologies if there are inaccuracy in my words somewhere)

Big Kid Well, I don't experience the leap to be that big. I can definitely see how it transformed over the years and I see how the same concepts are kept intact even though it seems to me that many people don't seem to see it that way; I personally don't understand why, because when you examine the deeper relationships between the games it's clear to me that while XV is a different game from the original idea of Versus XIII, it's not different enough to say that there is no similarity whatsoever, especially in essence.

I'm not certain why anyone would believe the FFXIII linearity to be a 'theory' that it's entirely related to the plot of the game. How can anyone not understand this to be exactly as intended? Square didn't comment because it's obvious. The entire narrative is that they are being chased and sought after while on the clock to their own deaths. There is no 'theory' involved in this at all, so who could possibly not realize this is exactly as designed? After they hit Gran Pulse they are met with several realizations that make them stop and analyze who they are, hence the narrative and world expands. Whether people have issue with the linearity doesn't change that it was actually a brilliant concept, just flawed in execution. The only actual two major definitive flaws I have found besides things that are more preferential like the likability of the characters are A) The writers left spoilers in the codex before their plot reveals, and left items in the codex that were vital to the plot without implementing them into the narrative, which is unforgivably bad as a writer no matter how much I absolutely love the story. And B) They left the full battle system locked for far too long. Other than that, I consider the story, the characters, and the concept to be exceptional. Could it have been better? Absolutely, but nowhere close to 'the worst ever' or any such nonsense. Including all 3 games in the trilogy, I consider it the strongest overall story written in the series. Granted that is cheating since they have much more time to work with, but it really caught me off guard in so many ways.
@harleyrobb3034

I am glad someone understands that, the theory however is still fun to explore and not many are willing to sit back and realize this. The narrative also reflects the way Cocoon and Gran Pulse are. I have a few Final Fantasy theories: 1- Cloud's mother was experimented on like how Sephiroth's mother was by Hojo, but the experiment failed and he just ditched them afterwards. It would explain why Cloud was able to become powerful enough to beat Sephiroth. Hojo is basically "the man behind the curtain," it wouldn't make sense to stop after one success. Honestly, I think he got the short end of the stick and I hope they give the character more screen time in the remake. 2- All the games are set in the same universe but different planets instead of a multiverse. Each world gives different titles/names to the common elements of their world. They could be colonies of one advanced civilization that's been on each planet so long that they've forgotten. 3- Parasite Eve/The Third Birthday is set in the same universe. 4- FF VII is partially inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and horror movies from the 1980's.. Young Hojo looks like a CGI of 1980's Re-animator Herbert West played by Jeffrey Combs. The Mako is green like the re-agent from the same movie. Jenova was discovered buried deep within the mountains (At the Mountains of Madness, The Thing) and is a cosmic entity from space(a theme in Lovecraft's works). The black robed dudes following Sephiroth around are basically a cult, and the whole idea of science playing with what they shouldn't.....I can go on and on.... 5- Sephiroth accidentally turned himself into a Summon. In Advent Children, Kadaj had to "summon" him using what was left of Jenova. He can't appear unless someone else brings him in, so he's limited in what he can do, like create a pandemic. Hence, why there's a two year gap between the game and movie. 6- Kefka succeeded, which is obvious, but it wasn't what he expected. He was waiting for someone to rise up to him because it would be a break from complete and utter boredom. 7- Another FF VII theory: ignoring Crisis Core....Sephiroth was influencing Zack when he and Cloud were returning to Midgar. He wanted them to get caught by Shinra and taken to the headquarters. It was established that he could control Cloud(beating up Aerith). If he could get out on his own, he would have, so why not until Cloud was in the Shinra cells? Because he needed to have someone to control on the outside. He used Cloud to kill president Shinra and then lead him back into the cell before escaping. edit: 8- ANOTHER FF VII one: The Turks have no free will and are likely clones. They served President Shinra and destroyed Sector 7 just as he wanted. After his death, they became bound to Rufus and followed his bidding.

Well I can just return to my previous statement. It's not a bad game/series itself. It's a bad Final Fantasy game. If it would have been a game called I don't know "Fal'Cie" or something along those lines, it would have been fine. Sure some stuff was a bit stupid and could have been handled better, but overall fine. But if you take on the name of a certain franchise, you also need to take the expectations into consideration. If you take FF, which is about huge worlds to explore, interesting mixed time settings(futuristic + mage f.e.), a big unique cast of characters and so on and create a game like XIII, of course it won't match everyone's expectations. And this point is clearly visible on reviewing sites. Sites that looked at FFXIII as it's own game, gave it quite a good rating. Reviewers that compared it to the previous installments, gave it a mediocre to bad rating.

There are minions and outfits and name-drops all over the place from the other games. But there's also the actual connective tissues, as weak as they might be. I mean there were three blatant crossover events, one where Lightning visited, one where Shantotto from XI visited, and one where the chick in the last XI expansion visited and then STAYED in XIV.

+Eji Also not forgetting a certain cave, XIV played with so many aspects from other games, Triple Triad, Names, Mounts, Minions, Events, even Fate names, so many references to other Final Fantasy Games. Then we hit the obvious points, lke Avatar/Summon etc names, Monster types and names, Moogles etc, which are all the same.

Yoshi P, the producer of FFXIV, has stated that they wanted the game to be a sort of "final fantasy theme park" with elements from other final fantasy games woven into the world. Now, they usually keep these extra elements out of the main story, but they've done cross-over events with XI and XIII so far with plenty of classic characters popping in other, more consistent side-stories. I don't know if SE has explicitly decided that they are all part of a multiverse, but XIV definitely fits the bill for the theory described here regardless. Cool stuff :)

Sam Dark It's diverged a bit but I think it's still part of the series because the whole theme of FNC is crystals and how theyre connected to gods and magic. Type 0 is part of FNC and it and 15 have kind of a similar plotline (with the imperial army trying to take over and seal the crystal and all that stuff.)

@AlextheSuperfly

I read this theory a while ago. The idea is that by inheriting Edea's power, then defeating Adel to get hers, Rinoa ends up with all the sorceress power and eventually becomes Ultimecia, either due to magical immortality and the mental strain of all that power sending her loopy, or grief at Squall's death (if you subscribe to that theory). Evidence for the theory is kind of there and kind of not: basically 1) a resemblance between Rinoa and the *very* quick image we get of Ultimecia we get in the end cut scene, and 2) the fact that Ultimecia's GF (i.e. summon) is Griever, the same name as Squall's ring, which he gave to Rinoa, the idea being that the ring functions the same way the Doom Train ring does and actually houses the GF. (Interestingly, if you rename the ring Griever near the start of the game, the GF name changes too.)

You missed a chance to talk about Ivalice when you mentioned the multiverse, because Final Fantasy XII, FFXII:RW, FFT, FFTA(actually this is a special case,) FFTA2, and arguably Vagrant Story, all take place in the same universe of Ivalice at different points in the timeline, with the exception of FFTA which isn't real, but what happens there seems to influence the real Ivalice. We know this because Montblanc mentions Marche in subsequent appearances. My problem with the XIV multiverse theory is that, the Warriors of Darkness are all the same races as the races of Eorzea, and each game has it's own set of races, so did they change species to fit in? We also know to the fate of two of those universes, one is consumed by light and the other is consumed by darkness and is what they call in XIV The Void. I don't think this Void isn't the same one that Gilgamesh speaks of, because its it's own separate universe with it's own inhabitants and stuff.

+Mike Abundo I saw that one. Realistically, yeah, it makes sense, but realism is rarely the point of a Final Fantasy story - style and drama take top priority, and that's just how they saw fit to direct the stabbing death of Aerith at that time. Perhaps they will re-direct the scene entirely for the remake, while keeping to the iconic imagery of Sephiroth descending as she prays.

You know, I think it's just that Square went a bit overboard with certain scenes. At the end of Disc 1 in FF8, you get an ambiguous scene where Squall gets impaled so it will make you more curious about Disc 2. I think that's what people call a cliffhanger or something. Also, you have a similar scene in FF9 that NO ONE ever talk about apparently : the crash of the Theater Ship. The explosion is enormous. In real life, most people would die from such a crash. Yet all the important characters are alive and the ship isn't even completely destroyed. I mean, people could make up a "Zidane and his friends died and it's just Zidane or Vivi's soul dreaming up the rest of the journey" theory too here.

two games support that multiverse theory as well; FFIX has 2 worlds where one is grooming the other in order to settle there and abandon their homeworld/universe FFT (first one) has an Easter-egg where Cloud [FFVII] becomes a part of your army. Kingdom Hearts includes Disney universes in the list of accessible places in this multiverse too.

The multiverse is a no brainer and the FFX's Spira being FFVII's planet makes a lot of sense. But the Squall is dead theory only holds up because of the change of discs at the point where squall is impaled - that scene feels final! But the faceless Squall thing and trippy ending is not an afterlife thing if it were Laguna and Raine would be alive together in the present. Or Laguna and Julia would have been together and in love. But in both cases they aren't. That ending is about love. It shows Squall and Rinoa trying to hold on to one another and Squall in particular, trying to save/hold on to his memories of Rinoa. Ultimecea's defeat basically unravelled time and memory. Basically, by defeating Ultimecea Sqaull and friends create the mother of all time paradoxes. Ultimecea was the reason for him meeting Rinoa and his whole adventure so by defeating her they screwed with history and the future. Squall's literally left standing on a chunk of barren rock at the end of time - it just so happened that that rock was the field he promised to meet Rinoa at and (que the soppy fairytale ending) her love for him conquers the end of the universe - she is a sorceress after all. Sure the ending makes as much sense as 2001 a Space Odyssey but frankly, the idea of time compression is like being sucked into a blackhole so their victory would be like escaping from one - which is kinda like hitting rewind on your life history. All very "timey wimey" I know but it actually is a really moving ending and its sense is reinforced if you listen to the song playing 'Eyes on Me' - "Just reach me out, then you'll know that you are not dreaming".
