City of the Great Machine is top notch. I especially think the solo mode does well with capturing the feel of a hidden movement game with not knowing necessarily what the AI is going to do, with it becoming more predictable as the deck thins out prior to reshuffle. It does a good job, I think, of rewarding thoughtful play and trying to think one or two steps ahead, especially since you're choosing your cards before revealing where the city's guards are going. I find it to be an all around good experience and it would get a big recommend from me for solo/coop play.

I echo what other have said about City of the Great Machine. Multiplayer it was fun, but solo it was awesome. It’s staying in my collection just for that.

I love City of the Great Machine - but I play it almost exclusively as a 3 player coop or solo. A much better experience, you should really try it !

City of Great Machine is one of my top 10. I actually think the solo/coop mode is as good, or even better than the 1vAll. The solo mode adds missions and few other things that give it more thematic feeling. 1vsAll is fun, but it basically comes down to "which district are the heroes going?", which just kinda feels like Not Alone. The CotGM expansions add a ton of great modules. The blimp is a lot of fun in 1vAll. I think you'll enjoy the solo mode a lot! It has so much customizability you can do with it.

GWT wasn't for me either. I BGG-blogged a session report, and got a thumb up from Alexander Pfister. That's classy. I admire the design, but prefer the "Simple Rules, Interesting Decisions" side of the hobby. And now I've told you the name of the blog, and of my favorite designer.

Whitehall is the shorter more streamlined experience for me. I play it with my kids and we're always having fun.

The amount of people saying the solo mode is excellent is honestly a little daunting 🙂

I'd be curious to know what the 5 highest ranked BGG games are that 1.) You have never played, and 2.) Are at least 3 years old (released in 2021 or before).

I think the city of the great machine has potential, but we are not playing enough to unlock it. My biggest grippe right now is that it seems a no brainer that the great machine must load guards in the rooms the revolutionary are in to reduce their resources as much as possible when leaving. which leads to really boring board state and drawn out games. our other issues is that the revolutionary need to be coordinated to get anything done, but our group are too afraid to give away info so there's barely any discussions going. Just something to keep in mind if your group is not big on open communications.
