Just a note on the terra vise. I picked one up at Cabela’s before watching your review. Afterwards, I planned to return it because I was having the same issue with the vise tightening after three rotations. I had a bunch of flies I wanted to tie for a trip, so I figured I would spin them up and bring the vise back the next day. After playing around a bit (the included instructions were not great) I discovered that getting the vise to rotate was just a matter of process. You have set the disc closest to the jaws so it is just far enough away to allow the jaws to rotate, then you tighten the smaller disc (the one with the handle) INTO the first one until it’s tight. Then the vise rotated freely and very smoothly. So for those of you considering the Terra vise, it does work well as a rotary vise.

Nice review. I was looking for an inexpensive #vise to get my grandsons involved in tying. The Riverruns catches my eye, and the Maxcatch is a close second. I’ve never used the Terra vise, but I did buy their bobbin cradle for one of my vises. Simple, but works. I agree with you on the rotary function of the Terra. If it did that to me, I definitely wouldn’t endorse it.

Great run down, Matt. Especially given most people review the pricey vises, which is nice but not necessarily accessible for everyone. I enjoy using a $50ish crown rotating vise, though the jaws don’t really work for small (18 or smaller) hooks. I recommend that style along with the ones you’ve highlighted. Enjoy the channel! #vise

Thanks Dave, and yes, I love the Crown! I almost included it in this batch but may review it separately. And I agree, down to a #14 or 16, that thing does great. Try to put an 18 or 20 in it and you might end up launching hooks across the room. :-)

Matt, thank you for your great reviews. I am curious why you do not mention the hook sizes these vises can take? I understand the answer to the hook size might be "it depends". I think hook size will help folks decide what to get. Keep up these great reviews.
@WhereWeWild10 ай бұрын
Hey I just got a supreme and every time I try to lock it all the way down it opens back up and the hook falls out. Are you not supposed to lock it all the way down? It stays pretty tight with the lever not completely down but I thought it was supposed to be locked all the way down where the lever is 90 degrees?
@SavageFlies9 ай бұрын
That's odd. I can't remember having that problem when I tied with a Supreme. But it has been over a decade since I've used one regularly. If I recall, I did usually adjust the jaws so that I could lock it all the way down. If you're locking it down all the way and it has a tendency to want to pop back open, try to open the jaws just a bit and then lock it down.
@WhereWeWild9 ай бұрын
@@SavageFlies Ok thanks I appreciate it. Yeah I was trying that actually and just couldn’t seem to ever lock it all the way down without it opening back up. It holds a hook pretty tight with the lever bent to the point right before it clicks all the way down if that makes sense, but just thought it was supposed to be pushed all the way down so was wondering about it.

Hey Matt, have you come across a good real true rotary vice for less than $100? I have 4 vices now, 2 of them are really old stationary similar to the first 2 you showed, and 2 rotate but aren't exactly great. Squeaks, doesn't rotate that smoothly, or they seize up like the one your showed on this video. The one I'm currently using all the time is a Cabela's $30 clamp one, and it squeaks when you rotate, doesn't rotate smoothly, and it's not really good for small flies, which I'm tying more these days. Thanks for the video!
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. The Griffin Odyssey Spider is probably your best bet for a true rotary. It's nothing too fancy but you can tie pretty small on it and the ones I've played with are pretty smooth. amzn.to/3AQFNUj If you want to see it in action, I did a fairly brief review of it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppmbc61rmsSAsMk

I’m really happy that you are reviewing inexpensive vises as possible choices for new tyers. I’ve seen some recent video and a print reviews that say new tyers should start out buying a lifetime vise which I think could be a costly choice. I wish everyone would love tying, but that is just a wish. With a good quality, inexpensive vise, a new tyer can find out if he or she likes tying, can afford more materials on the $ saved, & gain enough experience to find out what types of flies they want or need to tie & what features they want in a lifetime vise before deciding if they want continue tying. Future video idea: Some kind of fly tying spelling contest with a wacky but useful prize featuring vise vs. vice, tier vs. tyer, aftershaft vs. filo plume, etc. ;-)
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
This is a great comment Bob and I agree 100%. I might mention this in my next vise review. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting with an economy vise. If you find you like the sport you'll likely want to upgrade in a couple of years anyway, and now you'll have a backup vise or one you can donate to a kid or another new tier. And worse case scenario, if you find you don't really care for tying, you're not out that much. :-)

Matt from the vises under $100 video I’ve been considering the crown vise. It looks easier to use/setup than some of the others. Do you still recommend it if a starter vise? Unfortunately I didn’t find your videos until after I bought the Colorado kit after so far I have tied around 200 flies before the jaws started to let the hook slip.
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Kevin, and I do actually still recommend the Crown. Unless... you tie a lot of flies smaller than a #18. It has great hook-holding power and can work down to a #20 or so but you have to put a pretty big bite on the hook and it doesn't leave you with a lot of room for material. For standard trout sizes in #12-14 or bigger it works like a champ. And you're right, there is hardly any setup at all to it. The first time you use it you might loosen one bolt to get a comfortable angle, then you won't have to mess with it again.

Matt, thanks for the review and comparison of the maxcatch and river runs #vise I have been leaning towards the maxcatch. Now after your video, the river runs wins. You can use the bag as a dust cover when mounted on the bench.

Actually that's a great idea! I think the Maxcatch might *look* a little cooler with the shiny aluminum and green color, but for functionality, I probably like the Riverruns just a bit better. That's exactly what I do Scott! I keep a bag with the essentials under the back seat in my truck. I don't use it that often but I have broken it out at a campsite a time or two and once while bored one night on a family vacation. :-)

The Maxcatch is the bomb! Thanks to Matt I picked this one up, and 43 dollars was very well spent. My dad (a mechanical engineer) was very impressed with the overall quality of aluminum, and pretty decent machining. The clamp is great, great holding power, and pretty easy use. Only con for the price is a little tiny wobble.
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nolan; I appreciate the feedback! The engineering some of these overseas companies can pull off really is impressive sometimes. As for the little wobble on the Maxcatch, I have one myself, have given two away and have one more to give out so I've actually had four in my hands. I only noticed the wobble in one of them. Now they do come with two sizes of rubber O-rings but I've never explored where you might put them or really where they may be needed.

@@SavageFlies good point...I may try one of those o rings and see if it'll work

Great reviews, Matt. A couple of those vises look like they would be good for beginners or as a travel vise. Thanks for all you do for our sport.
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed Todd. The last two are perfect for traveling. Only about 10 ounces, and they're both really stable when clamped to a bench or table.

I’m glad you reviewed the Terra Rotary Vice! That is the vice that I actually use and I was upset when I found out how it worked! But….i was able to find out a way to make it work for me and now it works really well as a rotatary vice! I just take a very strong super glue or epoxy and coat the thread on the main shaft where the tensioning nut is and make sure the tensioning nut is tightened to your desired tension. Then let the tensioning nut and lever/handle nut cure to the main shaft and it all becomes one unit. If you have the tension set right when it cures then it works wonderfully! Just don’t let the glue get in the main housing! Haha if you haven’t thrown it away or sent it back yet you should try it just to see how it works👍🏼
@SavageFlies2 жыл бұрын
Outstanding tips! I will give it a shot. I’m usually too lazy to send anything back so if I can make it work, I could do a how-to video for anyone else out there who has the same problem. Thank you for this!
@BlueLinerMedia2 жыл бұрын
@@SavageFlies works well for me, but of course once the tension is set to how you want it it cannot be adjusted after it sets up👍🏼 good luck!
