Pierre Méndez-France is a French center-left politician who held important government positions during the Third and Fourth Republics. As a member of the Radical Party, Pierre Méndez-France became cabinet leader in 1954. He concluded the peace that ended the First Indochina War and began the process of granting independence to Morocco and Tunisia.
In 1932 Mendez-France was elected to the National Assembly, he was the youngest member of the Assembly. His abilities were recognized immediately, and in 1936 he was appointed Secretary of State for Finance in the Popular Front government of Leon Blum. When World War II began, he joined the French Air Force. After the surrender of France to Nazi Germany, he was arrested by the Vichy government and sentenced to six years in prison, but on June 21, 1941 he escaped and managed to reach England, where he joined the Free French movement led by Charles de Gaulle.
