When I was learning nouns, I remember hearing “A noun is a person, place, or thing” on repeat, but I don’t remember having tons of practice applying nouns to real reading or writing! Can you relate to this?

Could you help me clarify the classification of animals within the context of common nouns? Considering that 'animal' is a common noun, when teaching children about common nouns, which category (people, places, or things) would you place animals in?

Hey! I've seen a few different ways to categorize animals. Sometimes, I've see the categories as "people/animals, places, things" and sometimes I've seen them as their own category - "people, places, things, animals." I've also seen them go under "thing" but then of course you'd need an explanation that animals are living beings, etc.

What definition of a proper noun would you give to first graders? I had someone tell me it’s a special name of a person place animal or thing. I remember being told it was a specific name.

Good question! I think either definition is fine. If "special" resonates more with your students than the word "specific," you could definitely use that.
