Many RPG Maker games with default assets can be better than games with custom content. The first Legionwood is much better than most fancy-pants games with custom graphics that look amazing but play like ass.

Im always doubting myself and im scared my game will no be received well, im also using the default assets because im simply not able to design my own, but when i see how bad 99% of the games are and were made, it rly pushes my confidence. atm i have invested 800hours of work for ~2 hours of gameplay, but at least ive received mostly positive feedback from 10 random testers.

This is how I feel as well, I'm currently making a game and I get worried cause i always think to myself "No one is gonna place this its gonna get brushed over I just wasted my time" but finding these base assets games and other games that aren't necessarily bad really boost my confidence and it just shows me that you don't have to be trying to produce a triple a game out of rpg maker to get recognition from the community just some effort and faith in yourself Sorry for the wall of text 😅

RTP is Run Time Package because that's what it was officially called when installing previous RPG Maker versions like 2000, 2003, XP, etc., it's not called that any more in MV because it uses a different system, but the idea is still the same.

@staticshocker69
@staticshocker69 Жыл бұрын
For those wondering why it was called as such, it also came separate from the program so that devs could keep download sizes of their games low. If you packaged the resources with the game you would be downloading an extra 300-500MB of resources you could just download once, by downloading the Run Time Package.

This was such a fair, genuine, and fun video on these handful of games. So often I hear people just throw RPG Maker games aside solely due to the engine - and that's even with custom made art/sounds. So many don't appreciate the wonderful side of RPG Maker and it's beautiful material. I'm glad you didn't just hate on these games for not being made super well, but made valid criticisms, explained the good they were aiming for, and really gave a nice look into the world of games like these. You also did a great job explaining in a cohesive, understandable way how a lot of behind the scenes stuff for RPG Maker works, and you did wonderfully. I'm currently working on a game of my own, and it mostly uses the default RM, though in a stylized way. I hope people will look at it with the same fairness as you've done with these games. You're a great reviewer and KZbinr; I wish you the best!

I'm one of the aforementioned RM creators with no art skills and I get very disheartened hearing people both in the community and on YT tear games apart for using default RM and say you just should bother publishing if you don't have full custom assets. ok this video is 4 years old but I'm still gonna comment because as I am attempting to make my first game using RPG Maker (that way I don't have to get bogged down with making all the art/music/code/etc) this was actually a really great video. Pretty much every other video I've looked at on this topic is just 20 mins of them dogging on the default assets and even RPG Maker as a whole. The end conclusion usually being either don't use RPG Maker or disguise it so much you can't tell it was made with RPG Maker. Which aren't exactly bad points (I'm trying to use some community made assets to vary up the art) but I am specifically wanting to make that jrpg style and not just a puzzle horror game (which seem to be the go to alternative style). Finally finding someone talking about both the good and bad of default games while keeping an overall positive attitude was super refreshing.

The RTP in the right hands (and some GIMP editing) could still make an attractive looking game.

Now that we know the Switch version of MV is coming out, this would be very encouraging to those who are forced to use the limitations of the console version...like me. For some like me, people simply can't get the PC version due to varying circumstances. So we need some good feedback on devs who absolutely-through no fault of their own-MUST use default options.

You sure do give devs the benefit of the doubt. It's a double-edged sword, though.

the thing is that the XP and VXA "RTP" is hardly a "runtime package" since its just a bunch of assets, imo RM"s true "Runtime Package" is the "Game.exe" file included in every game

It is officially called "Run-Time Package". rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-packages/ However that name is only suitable for versions prior MV, since MV drops the idea of the RTP (being a redistributable default collection of assets that games made with the program could access as long as you have it installed, in order to potentially decrease download sizes).

This is the motivation as to why I'm making my game.... I may have added my own stuff to make it stand out, but I use the Character Generator, so that counts. Right?

Thank you for the review. I enjoyed watching it. I decided that instead of writing books that no one will read, I'd better make games like Novells. RPG maker has enough assets, so I don't need to manually draw everything by myself! But then I realized that it is more interesting to create a world, a game with RPG Maker. So, now I'm in process of creating a maze-exploration game. With the default assets. It won't have the tactical battle system, and I'm still not sure if I will add enemies there. So, if I complete that game, I will share it here.

7:35 nice to see that wasn't platitudes. I've seen a lot of RPG use a "standard fantasy setting" as a facade.

Well, just remember. I’m going to be making a game called lemon quest, which uses the games assets. And uses the pre-made maps. Mostly because I believe somebody will hate the maps, and calling them too hard to explore in. Which is the main thing to do when playing my games.

I wanna make an RPG Maker MV game. Gotta get some practice first! Just a general idea of the plot: "A boy named Anton falls into another world that bases its entire society around magic and sorcery. He then learns he’s part of a prophecy going on with an evil sorceress named Eldia. He is destined to collect the eight Stones of Light to open the door to a powerful blade that can end Eldia and her forces once and for all. Along the way, he meets and partners up with a colorful cast of characters. A girl named Katelyn, a boy named Zane, and a girl named Terrina."

If you can find it, there was an incredibly great RPG Maker game called something like "Master of the Wind" where one of the main characters was a skeleton named Stoic. It had a good plot, but we're talking *whistles* 2009? If you can find it, let me know because I want to play it again. Should be free.
