+Daniel's Game Vault do you get the glow around the mousepad due to total internal reflection?, so if I were to make one of these mousepads but an extended version to fit a keyboard onto as well, all I would do would be to add a couple extra led bulbs into the circuit.

another cool thing to do would be, since it's plexiglass, you could use a piece of fine sandpaper or a fine sanding bit for a dremel and sand some desin (like the circuitboard) in the surface. that will give it a nice matte finish to the parts that you want to glow, and when you switch the light on, only the part that you sanded will glow! :D

use the spray adhesive on the back and put a white piece of material on it to reflect downward light up, paper, plastic ect, take a fine grit sand paper and rough up the top surface to break the internal refraction you should get much better result this way, also printing out a second design and cutting with scissors the part that you really want to light up and layering the two can create a very nice circuitry glow and a higher contrast.

Now *this* is a good project! If I didn't have a laptop and were to make this, I would probably add some form of protection for both the LEDs and the computer port (just a 3.3v voltage regulator or a couple of resistors) and perhaps cut another groove for a female USB port to sit in. That way you could use just one cable for both the mouse and the mouse pad (: Anyway, glowing plexiglass looks great; might make something in the near future!

I think kipkay should start a series teaching about various electronic components from the very basic level and explaining how they could be used in small electronics. The subjects would vary from capacitors and microchips to bigger logic contraptions and appliances.

Hi kipkay! You could improve this by adding use "el" wire. You can find it online for around 6 dollars and use the cutting tool to cut Into the plexiglass a lot more and place the world wire and then use a real mouse pad overtop of that. plug the sub part into your computer and it works really well! I did it myself. You can also do the same thing with a keyboard.

It is very easy to polish the edges with a blowtorch and a soft cotton rag. Apply heat to the edge and then rub it with the rag. Repeat and work your way around the edge. Be careful with the torch, getting it too close will cause the plexiglass to bubble up. A little practice and you will end up with a nice clear smooth finish.

Already got a "hightech" mouse... Its not just the glide, its also for the censor to pick up a more precise input. The lifetime of the mouse feet is increased as well. Perhaps if you got a special surface on your desk then its not necessary, but if not, it IS good to have a mousepad...

Actually a nice idea for a short project costing me a bit of plexy and few led diodes. However, I have a concern... Due to the highly smooth surface of plexy glass, will it work with a normal optical sensor mouse? I had some trouble allready with my desk finish, just because it's way too shiny, so I got fed up and bought a laser sensor mouse.
