Merlene Ottey is, without a doubt, my favorite! I grow up admiring her and actually once that I was in a sport store in Medellín, Colombia, I saw a big picture of her in a wall promoting PUMA, then I decided to ask to the manager if please they could give me that one and they did it! I was so happy back home with my big picture framed and of course with my sport shoes that, by the way, they weren´t PUMA brand, LOL! She was in a epoque where was difficult to find out the use of illigal substances. It was easy to understand that she was a very clean and honest sprinter, the time she spent in the track shows it.. By the way, I still haven't recovered from the 100m finals in Stuttgart 93 and in Atlanta 96, those have been my worst nightmares. I am still following her, totally admirable. Love!

Awesome list of some of the greatest sprinters of all time. If I had to choose a favorite of course it's Shelly-Ann. She has proven herself repeatedly in Olympic and World Championship competitions. She even earned a bronze medal in an Olympic final after being injured all season. While her accomplishments on the track should be enough, she also appears to be humble and graceful off the track. What more can one ask for in a champion...……..Shelly is the GOAT!

@USA Nope. Ottey's best time in a major global 200m final was a mere 21.98. Techinically falling apart in the 1993 World Championship final to win gold. Then got handed a gold medal in 1995 WC 200m and a bronze in 2000 olympics 100m. She is definitely not a GOAT. More like an Asafa Powell with a better lust for medals. Shelly-Ann Frazer Pryce success is limited to the 100m hence I can't put her above Merlene Ottey who did the double (100m/200m). Drug cheating(which was facilitated by the IAAF NOT conducting out-of-competion drug testing until 1989) by the americans, russians and east-germans during the 1980s play a MAJOR role in Merlene NOT winning more gold medals in the sprint events. And people should not forget that Merlene (1) was denied the gold medal TWICE in the 100m in a photo-finish to the same american athlete(Gail Dever ), (2) she is the only athlete male or female at age 36 years to make the 100m/200m finals in the Olympics and win a medal for both events and (3) she is still the world record holder for the indoor 200m event.

Unlike Asafa Powell, Merlene Ottey have by far been a great achiever in her field of endeavour. If you had done proper research it would have been revealed to you that Merlene Ottey have at least TWO individual gold medals in a sprint event at the World Championship level. And don't forget that on TWO occassions she lost out on the gold medal in the world championship(1995) and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic in a photo-finish-Is losing a race in a photofinish by 1/1000 of a second a failure to you???? Additionally, her total medals for the Olympics and World Championship is THIRTY(30)-no Jamaican athlete past or present have ever earned so many medals in the major athletic championships (Read Wikipedia article on Merlene Ottey biography). Do your research before you respond to anyone comment. Shelly-Ann gold medals have only been in the 100m and unlike Merlene Shelly-ann had more things going in her favour with the existence of WADA. I think that is more of a nostalgic choice.She was the woman of the past who got things kicking for Jamaican female and Caribbean athletics.If you really watch her overall career the fact that she never won an Olympic title really puts her at a significant disadvantage.The only one who could reasonably even come close to challenging Shelly ann Fraser Pyrce is Veronica Campbell Brown.That being said Shelly Ann Fraser has consistently been a winner for such a long time and is very reliable on the big stage,while Veronica was reasonably reliable Shelly ann Fraser was just rock solid reliable on the biggest stages and over a long period of time.

Jamaica is so blessed. Ja has The greatest male sprinter ever and arguably the three greatest female sprinters ever.

Merlene was my friend, my college teammate, and my favorite Jamaican runner. Other Jamaican runners could have been great as well (myself included), but did not get the support from the delegation in charge of Jamaican sports. Many of the coaches and higher-ups tried to keep you down. They have their favorites.

You are right. Nepotism and drugs took a lot from many athletes especially those in Jamaica also some from other Diasporas. Blessings.

Merelene is undoubtedly the best and most outstanding female sprinter that Jamaica has ever produce. She was running against drugs athletes from everywhere. Yet she was consistent. She is simply the best. I will not take away anything from our new bread of athlete. They worked hard and is well deserved.

Her 200m PB is 21.64 or something but the best she ever ran was a mere 21.98 technically falling all over the place in 1993 WC 200m final to barely win gold. What a choker. Below par performance levels.

Merlene Ottey and Arthur Wint they set the pace. But, Shelly Ann, Elaine all of the females from the 80s upwards. Big up our little island Jamaica ❤️

Single handedly made the world notice female Jamaican sprinters. I love Merlene Ottey. What a talent!! Yes, sad she had to compete with those drug fuelled GDR women. Didnt get the accolades she so deserved. Nevertheless she remains an icon...for Jamaica 🇯🇲.

Merlene Ottey, Loraine Fenton, Grace Jackson, Juliet Cuthbert, Dion Hemmings and others they laid the foundation for Jamaican women sprinting. They competed in a era where people used drugs to enhanced their performance and still they represented well. Look what is happening today only raw talent and hard work shines. No place for cheaters in athletics shame on some of these so called greats of yester year. Big up all Jamaican athletes. Especially the new sensations. VCB, Shelly, Sherone, Melaine, Kerron, Shelly, Shericka, Elaine and all others you make us proud.

You must not be taking medals into consideration, be Shellyann is by far number one also her times are way better too, Campbell-Brown and Ottey were great but Shelly she on an nother level
@geraldinelowis96792 жыл бұрын
Merlene Ottey is the best,then Elaine.. Shelly wins races she hasn't gotten the times, furthermore she is too focus on the 100 it must be a level playing field VCB is one of the greatest.Shelly is good yes but not the greatest.Shericka will become one of the best athlete we will see if she continues on the same path.

Novelene Williams-Mills was battling cancer when she helped the relay team win gold in the 2015 Olympics. . It was one of the best races I ever saw. Blessings to all them. Proud of them all.

Shericka Jacko Jackson. A superb athlete/sprinter of both the 100m and 200m!.She is still making history in the 100m/200m and she will eventually surpass FloJo in both (1)overall achievements and (2) record in the 200m, NO question about it folks this lady is a speed DYNAMO and a marble to behold!.
