5 Gum came at a time when the image of gum had lost most of its shock value. It was no longer seen by as many elders as an idle, pointless, or uncivil display of bad manners, nor as a playful act of youth rebellion, nor something that teen movies would use to show that a kid was a rebel and/or fun-loving. Tim Burton’s Willy Wonka turned Violet Beauregard into a record-obsessed hyper-competitive overachiever, not just a gum enthusiast… because gum, really? If anything, the sound puts some people off… but closing your mouth goes a long way. Even some schools would allow gum in the 2000s, and the rule was up to the teachers in my high school. In college? If you have gum, you’d better share it! Gum was no longer a “bad habit”, or something that’s “at least better than smoking”, but a personal choice - a sensory stim, a way to freshen your breath/teeth, or just something to chew on… yet 5 somehow managed to bring back the “innocent rebel” image just a little longer... especially with these ads. They want you to wonder what "rain" is - it looks like spearmint, but it's "rain", and this ad looks like either some bizarre torture device or a sound designer's wet dream. I'd volunteer to ride the string instrument of epicness. And I like spearmint gum and can say "rain" is THE spearmint gum;) I wouldn't jump into a volcano though... that isn't my thing lol. I miss the 2000s aesthetic culture. It's irreverent in the most tasteful way.
