I'd love to see some "day in the life/what I eat" winter edition videos in the coming months to remind us of these principles. It seems like most of us use winter and holidays as a time to let good habits slide, but this year I want to head into the darker months with the best odds at keeping healthy physically AND mentally!

Learning to love bad weather made a huge difference for me. It started when I would go ride my motorcycle basically any time the snow wasn't sticking or the roads weren't icy, but really manifested during COVID shutdowns going for long hikes in the rain and snow. It's become one of my favourite things to do. Bonus is, the trails are less populated when the weather turns! So peaceful, and the practice has been transformational for my mental health.

I definitely bake a lot in the winter! I probably give away more than I eat (or at least I try to, ha!). I journal a lot more in the winter, write poetry, face paint and make up characters. I schedule lap swim at least 3 times a week and weight lift 2 days (sometimes alternating swim/weight training). I make a point to go on river walks even if it's rainy, putting on my rain gear and finding a place to perch on some rocks and howl at the water raging by. Nature is the best therapy.

I'm in the deep south and it's like opposite land. Summer is the time you want to stay indoors and get sedentary because the heat & humidity are so intolerable. I started my own health journey earlier this year and I got over my reservation about taking walks in the heat, and honestly I got used to it. It's sticky & sweaty though not as buggy as I thought. It was peaceful too because no one was crazy enough to be outside walking in the 90 degree heat, I was the only crazy guy out there lol. But I have been seeing results so I am going to keep at it.

I ran a uke jam for years that met every week but this year I’m pulling inward and hibernating. I’m also an introvert so I just want to try something different this year. I’m going to focus on meditating, mandolin, strength training, decluttering, making the house cozy, and watercolor. I walk every day and getting outside is huge! I also use light therapy. The darker months are *really* very hard on me, even though I live in a sunny place, so I just hang on tight.

Getting a lil walk in the morning - without my blue-light blocking glasses - to get coffee at the shop 15mins up the hill for me is so perfect. Gets a lil exercise snack in along with the sunshine and coffee/a little bit of human interaction (I live solo). All these tips are great but I definitely gotta work on my indoor habits! What a great idea to really focus on that.

That being said - my eyes are bad enough so I’m not gonna damage them further by staring directly at the sun. Just an fyi for folks it’s not necessary to look into the sun, they say getting the light in by being outside is good enough.

I love having crafty things to do in the dark evenings, so candle making, painting it just doing a puzzle. The temptation to sit in front of the tv all evening is a lot! Also big fan of at home workouts! X

The flow of this video is awesome. It was probably a lot of work to make, so I wanted to show my appreciation :) Tip for juggling with 4 balls: it is impossible to juggle throwing balls from one hand to the other with any even number of balls. Think about it: if you throw RLRL, then the first ball you throw with right is the first one to land again left, but that is the side you threw a ball from last as well. So if you want to juggle with 4 balls, you keep two balls per side, and they do not cross. You are basically juggling two balls with one hand but with two hands at the same time ;)

thank you so much, I really appreciate the juggling tip, I will have to try it :D

Hi Derek, I've recently found and have been catching up on your channel, and it is awesome! Some super inspiring things I've taken from it so far: I've been able to adjust my meals to include so much more greens, salad and veg.. I'm no longer eating from a normal plate Haha, now its a pasta dish to fit all the goodness on.. I now do 15 minutes or so of exercise in the morning before heading to work which keeps me stoked.. When I found your channel you and I had just shaved our heads at the exact same time and are both rockin it sir!.. Also, water in smoothies!! This is the hack of the year for me, I was rinsing £££'s on oat/soy milk each week and the texture is so much better with water.. Thank you mate! James, UK

Loved the style of video! What helps me personally is morning walks/ runs, weightlifting, rope skipping, stretching. Movement in general. And I usually start to rearrange things at home during winter , work on creative projects from time to time, read and listen podcasts. Ow.. and also lots of saunas 🔥 getting some heat into the system

My dogs help me stay happy over the winter! Living in the PNW is rough during this time because I have to walk them in the dark mornings. I go outside on break around 9, so I get that circadian reset then. Nothing substitutes natural light though. I think the Swedish understand this, that's why they promote the "Hygge" way of staying content through the winter. My daily trampoline workouts definitely help with endorphin release too. Thanks for the video!

I retired early for a lovely, lovely springer spaniel with bad separation anxiety. We are out in almost all weathers (realised last winter that walking on sheet ice is not safe, but we don’t have many days like that). Otherwise I have 300 plus pages of an Agatha Christie novel to read to check the ending of a strange TV adaption thereof. And otherwise keeping the house reasonably clean is a job all by itself in the winter! Glad you are so creative with your activity ideas. Good luck with the 4 ball juggling!😊😊😊🍀🍀🍀🍀

I like the way you edited this one together. Very fun! The morning natural light routine totally changed my life. I used to have trouble falling asleep and then trouble waking up in the morning and would feel like I needed a nap after lunch. Like, for decades. After only a week or something of intentionally getting morning sunlight I was naturally falling asleep at night and feeling rested and ready to wake up by the time my alarm went off in the morning. I have added a morning walk to the routine (weather permitting) and I feel just generally better throughout the day.

That's awesome, I know some people might see that tip and think its silly, but I really believe in it, it can be so helpful, especially with the time change coming next week. I've been doing it since summer and totally feel a difference! Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it :D

Seattle here, I feel ya bro. I do try for natural light but so many days it is just pitch black for hours when I get up. I have a bright light to make sure I get some light into my eyes even on the dark days. Aim for 10,000 lux of brightness when you’re shopping for lights
