What makes lying to Ellie even more painful, for me at least, is that I'm pretty sure the lengthy pause before she says "Okay" means that she knows Joel is lying to her.

I somewhat displeased they decided to make a sequel with the same characters because that ending was perfect for the game of that type. I'm sure P2 is going to be great, but I'm not sure they can pull off the magic of the first game again. They should've left it and gave us other characters.

The problem with the sequel is that it's bound for more heartbreak. Either Joel is infected, and Ellie ends up killing him. Or Joel is infected, and Ellie ends up sacrificing herself to save him. If by some miracle they don't go with one of those plots, I'll be happy. But then worried about what other, terrible thing they include.

"Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong." Never have I cried as much as when Mordin utters this line and the following few minutes of cutscenes. Thane's final moments and the prayer that ends up being for Shepard hit me hard as well though. And Legion. And Anderson. Yeah, I cried a bunch during Mass Effect 3.

It's the emotional response of seeing a parent losing his/her child. It's freaking hardwired in people's brain to immediately feel compassion towards it (and the more emotional you are, the worst it feels...I know people who got misty-eyed, but it was 'just a game', so it was ok and people who cried their eyes out...). It's not something everyone will simply let go. And in fact, together with the death of Tess, it sets the theme for the rest of the game: everyone and anyone CAN die. So, the game starts with a double leg kick to the feels.....

The "lying to Ellie" entry is a very vague moment too. Because you can find audio recordings in which a doctor talks about how cases like Ellie, people who are also immune, have lead to failure and those people with immunity dying in vain, but then you also find a recording about how Ellie's mutation is a unique one. So on one hand, there was the chance of Ellie also dying in vain and that there really are loads of others like her. And on the other, there really is the chance that Joel just lied to Ellie and deprived humanity of its cure. Part of what made TLoU so great was the fact that you did not know. At least in my oppinion.

@adelaideharper9201
@adelaideharper9201 4 жыл бұрын
@@freddierhodes8201 If they have no reason to believe it would work and have already failed repeatedly why is it okay to continue to take lives because there is a "small chance"? How many children are you willing to murder because they might stumble onto the cure? 10? 50? 5000? What they are actually doing is costing humanity its herd immunity --- the immune will have kids who are also immune. Unless the Fireflies dissect them all. So even in the pragmatic sense what they are doing is WRONG.
@Tinyvalkyrie410
@Tinyvalkyrie410 4 жыл бұрын
Jian Li it is the disease that mutated, not the person, so they would not pass down that immunity to their children. Additionally, herd immunity only works if the majority of people’s immune system can become capable of fighting it. The only way to achieve herd immunity in this case would be an easily disseminated vaccine, since no one survives an unmutated infection. I agree that killing a child without their consent is morally grey at best, but Joel killing the scientists that may be the last hope for humanity is indefensible, even if his motivation are understandable.

To be fair, this wasn't a metric of how much pain somebody went through. Just of things they didn't get over. I'm with Jane on this one. I romanced Alistair once, he dumped me and I sacrificed myself in spite. After that it was all Zevran, all the time for my play-thrus. Honorable mention for The Last of Us has to be the scene after Ellie kills David. The gameplay leading up to it is super intense and you can feel the anxiety and urgency that Ellie is feeling. Then that cutscene happens where Ellie finally lets it all out and is finally reunited with Joel. It's the only time in the game you see Ellie that vulnerable and you're jarringly reminded of how young she is. Gets me every time.

My heartbreak was Asriel from Undertale. First things first, he watched his best friend/sibling get poisoned and die at a VERY young age, and that night also died, but then he came back as a flower with no feeling for anyone he loved before. It drove him to a 'kill or be killed' mentality, and in an effort to feel any emotion he killed everyone he ever loved, over and over. Then, in the true pacifist run, at the end when he's himself again, he breaks the barrier, freeing everyone, and then the way he just sadly goes 'I can't keep these SOULs forever. I have to give them back. But I'll turn back into a flower. I won't feel anything anymore. Don't think of him as me.. okay? Keep these memories of me. ....Take care of mom and dad for me, okay?". And, after you wake up, if you walk back to where you fell in the ruins, he's sitting there, and he says "Don't worry about me. Someone has to take care of these flowers. Frisk, please leave me alone. I can't come back. I just.. can't, okay? I don't want to break their hearts all over again. It's better if they never see me." And he's just so loving, he asks you why you fell, and talks about Chara, and means well to his family, to the point of keeping himself from the surface, from seeing them and loving them one last time, and he even gies Frisk advice. I just can't handle the knowledge of how unfair it is for him! He never asked for any of it and yet he's doing everything he can to make others happy. He's so sweet.

Why does everyone seem to forget this? - In the final level of Last of Us, there's a voice recorder you can find. (It was a while ago but I'm pretty sure it was a recording I listened to and not a doctor's entry I read) A doctor was talking about how so far, attempts to create a cure from immune kids had failed. I feel similarly about the ending of Life is Strange. There isn't really any reason to believe that ... making a particular choice ... will actually do anything about the storm. It's not as if this has happened before, and while I agree that it would be a weird coincidence, "making a particular choice" is what they're saying started the storm in the first place (that is, Max using her abilities). I know "in game" that we're supposed to accept it's a clear cut decision, but realistically there's no reason to believe that it would work that way, and asking you to "make a particular choice" will definitely have a bad consequence, while _not_ making that choice arguably is no worse than "saving as many possible"... let's just say I didn't have any moral qualms about "making the other choice". Bringing it back around - if Joel let the Fireflies proceed, Ellie would definitely have been deader than disco, with (as several have pointed out) no real reason to believe that a cure or a vaccine would have been forthcoming. I see his lie as not motivated by selfishness at all - there's no reason to make poor Ellie carry that burden.

The end of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. The older brother is stabbed by a horrible spider lady just before reaching the tree of life that has the cure for their father's illness. The little brother is forced to climb up alone while big bro rests at the bottom. You make it all the way up, thinking "Maybe. Just maybe, I can cure him, too." But nope, hopes dashed. Big bro died while you climbed the tree. Little bro is quite understandably devastated. As if I wasn't already crying at this point, the game then forces me to bury him. I have a heartbreak moment here: *Hometown Story* This is one of the most light-hearted games ever. You are a shopkeeper and you run a shop in a town. Whilst you do that you interact with the villagers and unlock scenes and more villagers. But, there is one sad scene. One of the villagers is a happy young boy named Harvey. Once you have done all of the cutscenes involving Harvey you get one final cutscene with him. You leave your shop one day and see people running towards the plaza going “Oh no! Harvey”. You go towards the plaza and everyone is gathered. Another young boy called Peter (who is Harvey’s best friend) asks what happened to Harvey. *Then they bring out a child-sized coffin.* And then everyone cries and his mother goes “Why would you go up onto the mountain on stilts?” and his sister replies that “he thought there was a place where you could see all the stars”. You immediately "WTF". This game has been so happy and lighthearted, there is no way they just killed a little boy. But they did. You can’t ever bring Harvey back though, you can only make an observatory in his name. They also never mention him again afterwards.

Season 1 had me in tears at the ending and it took me a while before I thought I'd be ready for season 2...where I just happened to get the one ending that was also incredibly sad (or at least bittersweet). I haven't played season 3 or 4 yet because I don't want to flood my house with tears. (SPOILERS if anybody's curious about the ending I mean: it was the ending where Kenny leaves you with another group for your own safety, walking off to an unknown fate . Kenny had a lot of issues with his anger and grief, but he saw Clem as family. Watching him tearfully explain why she had to stay and even pause as he walked away brought all of those emotions from season 1 back again).

I also love The Last of Us, and the most heartbreaking moment for me was Sam and Henry's death. You met them and joked around with them, but... Their lives were ended in a very painful moment. Henry's motivation was his brother who was bit. By the time Sam turned, Henry lost everything. He blames Joel, but we know that he was blaming himself, then he ended his own life out of guilt. Your friends are gone in this apocalypse with no happy ending... Still an amazing game though! Cannot wait for part two!

Honestly, for me, even though it ended up "tricking" us or whatever, I was extremely heartbroken at the part of The Witcher 3 where Geralt finally finds Ciri. Even if you know what happens before hand I still find the scene extremely heartbreaking because you see how it effects the "tough guy" Geralt. But the thing about that scene is that it happens halfway through the game, but "halfway" in The Witcher 3 is still like 100 hours into the game, lol, give or take depending on how many side quests you do. So basically, you've spent countless hours of the game, all with the singular goal of finding Geralt's daughter figure. Someone you know he LOVES like a daughter. Not just someone he somewhat cares about, he LOVES her like she is his own. Then you get to this point where you get excited about finally being close to finding her, and the dwarves tell you "sorry." I paused for a long time after that remark... And I made Geralt respond how I would have, asking what he meant, like wishing it was some other meaning even though you know there isn't one... And then the scene that follows, the character who is basically so powerful that if he thought there was a huge monster in there, he would still just stroll in calmly. But he opens that door, and creeps in, as slowly as possible, almost like he doesn't want to reach her to find out because he dreads what he's going to find. Then he even turns her over as if there was any question. But the moment his mind could no longer invent some really far-fetched way that this was not Ciri, when he sees her face, you see him just lose it, and it really broke my heart watching that unfold. Better than most movies...

I would’ve done exactly what Joel did though. One of the most emotional and heartwarming games for me (throughout the game) And to make it clear, the Fireflies had tested on 12 others who were immune, all killed with no cure.... so there’s a big chance she would’ve died and there would be no cure. So all he really lies about to her (from what he said) is that they stopped looking for a cure. Obviously he didn’t tell her how many he killed to save her and that he did save her. Most heartbreaking/warming moment in the entire game for me though was when Ellie killed David and she started crying and Joel called her baby girl. I’m not an emotional guy, but that shit almost got me. Still gets to me on that ending. Feel both happy and sad and TLOU2 probably isn’t coming this year so that makes it worse. Sorry about this being an essay, but this game really hurt me internally Best story game ever. No debate.

Without ever having played the game and just hearing about how attached you get to the Ellie, I for sure would have done what Joel did or more. Even if it would save countless others from dying, I wouldn't sacrifice someone close to me to do it, especially if I viewed that someone like a daughter, which is what I pick up from what I've seen of their interactions. In other words, there is a good reason that Jedi stay single. So they can let Ellie die at the end of last of us.

Michael Why do so many people keep thinking that? Go watch the ending for yourself to confirm what you think. Joel lied about the other kids. He used that lie to support his next lie that they can’t find a cure with her. There were never any other kids. Joel lied about that. No one else in the entire game claims there are other kids either.

The TLOU Joel-Ellie-Lie thing was definitely a heart breaking moment for me too (right next to Sarah and watching Ellie breakdown and kill David). But that ending just goes to show the amazing writing that went into this game, because without the fantastic writing (not to mention the fantastic acting from Troy and Ashley), we would not have spent so much time rationalizing Joel's choice. Taking ourselves out of our emotionally-connected-to-Joel shoes, it's obvious to us then that Joel's choice is actually... kinda... really... super... not cool. It's selfish. He saved one person who could've saved the world for his own personal reasons. Of course at first we'd be like "HELL YEAH JOEL!! RUN FROM THOSE FIREFLIES!" because DUH WE LOVE ELLIE SHES AMAZING. But after the end, when you're sitting there in the dark with the credits rolling, you're like... whoa whoa whoa wait a minute. Not only did he blatantly lie to Ellie, he did it for himself. He was selfish and wanted to keep her alive for himself, so he wasn't alone. The world might not ever find a cure now because of his choice. ...BUT YET WE STILL TRY AND RATIONALIZE JOEL'S CHOICE EVEN YEARS LATER. NAUGHTY DOG'S WRITERS AND THEIR CHOICE OF ACTORS ARE WHY WE LOVE BAD PEOPLE. And Ellie.

That moment in TLOU is pretty much the only moment in any form of media, whether that be games, movies, tv, anything, that has actually had any kind of emotional impact. As Luke says in the video, there’s something about that slow burn of trying to rationalise Joel’s actions that really makes it stick with you long after finishing the game. Personally, I only played the game for the first time about 2 months ago, and I still can’t help but think about it, even so long after even touching the game.

I will always stand by Joel's choice to save her. Because I AM selfish, and I would have done the same exact thing. I would have kept her to myself. Personally, imo, she was too young to make a decision like that. She was consumed by survivor's guilt and wanted to made a martyr whether or not she recognizes that. Who is to say that she would have successfully made a vaccine? And even if she had, she wouldn't have made enough for everybody. There were just too many uncertainties for her to stay with the fireflies.

@@spookytsukino I know there's a distinct possibility that I'm completely alone in this, but the ending of TLOU made me genuinely angry. The kind of anger I don't think I had ever felt before. I felt as though the game did nothing except waste my time. I feel that, although pre-outbreak society would not have considered Ellie "old enough" to make that decision, with everything she and Joel had gone through and experienced, both together and individually, she certainly earned that choice. Sure there was a better than average chance it wouldn't work, but there was a chance it would. I don't like people making choices for me. If I was in Ellie's shoes and someone took it upon themselves to take a decision of that magnitude away from me, and then lied to me about it, I don't know if I could ever forgive them. What makes it worse is, from what I experienced throughout the game, this was all done because Joel is refusing to come to terms with the death of his daughter and is desperately clinging to the surrogate that fell into his lap. That was the impression the game, and more specifically it's ending, left on me. I've only played through once since it left such a bad taste in my mouth that first time. If I missed something along the way please let me know and I might go back and try to re-play it...

@@stephenhornickiii It's not a balanced view of what was going on, as there was no scenario where you could poll Ellie on what she wants. If Joel just left like Marlene told him, Ellie wasn't getting a choice, either. Ellie'd probably elect to die if given the choice, I grant you, but Marlene wasn't willing to take the chance and kept her sedated from when she was captured up until the operation that would kill her. Where there's life, there's hope; Ellie now has the agency to hand herself over to any faction, including what's left of the government, should she choose (though Joel would obviously protest). I don't think anybody believes that she believes Joel's lie. For her to even ask, the jig is up. Also, I think the pragmatic capabilities of the Fireflies is appropriate to discuss when assessing the morality of all this. We saw the one of the Fireflies' previous labs at the university. The head scientist died because he accidentally got bit by a monkey carrying the cordyceps that he was experimenting on. They're getting absolutely decimated by what's left of the government, and it looks like anybody they run across. Joel was able to rip their greatest hope away from them right inside their own HQ. This is after they entrusted their "one" hope with some shady mercs who they bribed with weapons ... to take her halfway across the country. They're clowns. Marlene also mentioned others who, while not quite as good specimens as Ellie (according to Marlene, anyway), I'm sure she viewed as disposable for the greater good, too. They're idealists, and you're given absolutely nothing in the game that would make you think they could pull off the thing they're trying. Joel does peg Ellie as his surrogate daughter, but I think that was bound to happen notwithstanding his trauma over Sarah. They went through a lot of crap together. Also, again, it seems unbalanced to bring up trauma compelling action without bringing up Ellie's survival guilt, which is the main reason why I think she'd choose to undergo the operation no matter how small the chance of success. And Marlene, who it is implied made a ton of sacrifices towards the goal of finding a cure, and is desperate to get it as vindication for all the evil she's already done (she'd likely act this way, even if a cure wasn't possible). That's just my take on events: Joel has grown to love Ellie, both as a friend as a surrogate daughter. She does seem to be in dire need of a parental figure, as well, so perhaps it is for the best. She's too willing to trust herself (for all we know, the only key to solving the cordyceps problem) to people who would play fast and loose with this gift. She's borderline suicidal, so it really grays the area between "letting someone make their choice" and "she's acting abnormally due to a delusion". It's a tough call in our world, too, but I think Joel's right even if he didn't necessarily mean to be.

Ocarina of Time was the first game I ever played that wasn't Jump Start 3rd grade or something to do with typing. Nobody dies at the end, but Link being sent back to a time where nobody knows what he went through in order to save the kingdom was incredibly heartbreaking for me. And the worst part is Zelda's reason for sending him back. Grow up on his own time? I'm pretty sure all the killing and fighting and surviving on his own ensured Link was grown up even if he didn't actually experience the intervening years. And now, not only does he not have no one to understand the psychological impact of seeing all those horrors, because no one else has experienced them, he also has to convince everyone that Ganon is actually a bad guy without sounding like a lunatic. Oh, and did I mention that all the work he put towards saving the world has no actual impact on the timeline he ended up in? Because all the work he put into saving the world has no actual impact on the timeline he ended up in. He has to start from scratch. Nice job breaking it, Zelda.

My minor list of heartbreaks..... 1. Noble Team in Halo Reach really kinda hit home the notion that Spartans aren't all invincible, and watching Noble Six go down the way he did was a very melancholy moment... 2. Playing through Altair's death in Assassin's Creed: Revelations...... nuff said.... 3. This is personal, and from a villains POV, but Star Fox Assault, when you kill the Aparoid Queen, you wipe out the entire race, and when I first played it I was like "Yeah, I saved the Galaxy!!" but now I look at it from her POV and it's just sad.... they were just trying to expand.......

The ending of Final Fantasy 10, as cringy as some of the scenes where (laugh scene), the Relationship between Yuna and Tidus grew, and felt very human. Then at the end, Tidus finds out he wasn't real (don't ask), and Yuna goes to have a final embrace, crying her eyes out, and phases right through him. so they are denied a proper good bye, and it's not like "Hey he's dying!" no, he just fades away, unable to do anything to console her as she cries.
